Riding high on the tidal wave of success, Sony Pictures and the charismatic Will Smith are already eyeing the horizon for new creative ventures, the ink barely dry on their latest hit, Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
Based on Daniel Suarez’s lauded novel Influx, Resistor is set to challenge our perceptions with a tale of brilliant minds against covert suppression. As the actor prepares to star in Sony’s latest science fiction thriller, intrigue surrounds the project, which seems to be reminiscent of a previous Keanu Reeves flick – Chain Reaction (1996 film) – with a similar premise of revolutionary technological discovery.

Will Smith is going from the success of Bad Boys: Ride Or Die to a new sci-fi film called Resistor: more here.
It looks like the rehabilitation of Will Smith’s public image is set to continue, with the news that the actor has been cast in Resistor. The announcement marks Smith’s first film project announced in the wake of the success of Bad Boys: Ride Or Die which has defied a wobbly summer box office to hoover up $220m so far across the world, seemingly answering questions about whether Will Smith could rebuild his career following his ill-advised actions at the 2022 Oscars ceremony.

According to Deadline, the Oscar-winning King Richard actor is set to lead Sony's Resistor, a sci-fi thriller based on Daniel Suarez' bestselling novel Influx.

The Slap aside, Will Smith proved this month that he’s still a bankable, global movie star with the return of “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.” “Bad Boys” studio Sony is teaming with Smith yet again, this time on a sci-fi feature.
Smith will star in and produce “Resistor” for Sony Pictures, a science-fiction film based on the book “Influx” by New York Times Bestselling author Daniel Suarez.
Plot details for the film are being kept under wraps, but Suarez’s book, released in 2014, is about a dystopian future where the government hides and controls any technological advancements and withholds them for a select few. The story follows a physicist who discovers a device that can alter gravity. But when he refuses to participate with the government organization on his innovation, he’s thrown into a hellish, high-tech prison occupied by other would-be inventors and rebels.

Ten years after Daniel Suarez’s novel Influx was published, THR reports that Will Smith is in talks to star in a feature film adaptation of the book titled Resistor for Sony Pictures.
The Hollywood Reporter previews in their report this afternoon, “The book focuses on a government agency that locks away inventors in a secretive prison and hijacks their work.”
Here’s the full plot synopsis for the novel…
What if our civilization is more advanced than we know?
The New York Times bestselling author of Daemon imagines a world in which decades of technological advances have been suppressed in an effort to prevent disruptive change.

There were some who thought Will Smith had destroyed his career when he slapped Chris Rock on the Oscars stage back in 2022 – but with Bad Boys: Ride or Die passing the $100 million box office mark after just ten days of release, that’s clearly not the case. So it’s no surprise to hear that Sony, the studio behind Bad Boys: Ride or Die, is continuing their working relationship with Smith by getting him to sign on to star in the film Resistor, an adaptation of the novel Influx, from bestselling author Daniel Suarez.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony isn’t offering to reveal any Resistor plot details, so we have to turn to the description of Suarez’s novel to get an idea of what this movie might be about. Goodreads provides the information on Influx: Physicist Jon Grady and his team have discovered a device that can...

“Bloodshot” director David S. F. Wilson is teaming up again with Sony Pictures and is tapped to direct the sci-fi thriller “Influx” at the studio, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Sony acquired the rights to Daniel Suarez’s 2014 sci-fi novel “Influx” earlier this year, and Wilson will direct the film based on an adaptation of the book by Zak Olkewicz. Escape Artists is producing.
“Influx” won the Prometheus Award for Best Novel in 2014 and imagines a world in which the futuristic possibilities that were predicted to arrive in decades have actually already been discovered and invented but have merely been hidden and reserved for just a select few. The book follows a particle physicist who discovers a device that can reflect gravity, only for his lab and his research to be shut down by a shadowy organization that wants to hide his discovery from the public at large.

No longer able to access cyberspace, he’s given a second chance when he’s approached to work for a mysterious colonel who offers to repair Case if he agrees to handle a secret mission and destroy an unthinkably powerful artificial intelligence orbiting Earth. Of course, in order to ensure that Case does his bidding, the colonel implants a slow-acting poison in his brain to keep him in line and assigns a street samurai named Molly to watch his back.

It was certainly one of the more surprising film stories of the year when, over the weekend, it was revealed that director Tim Miller had quit Deadpool 2. Miller had been an integral part of the key quartet – himself, writers/producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and star Ryan Reynolds – that had finally managed to get Deadpool to the big screen. One of the men responsible for creating the box-office blockbuster, Deadpool, won't be part of Deadpool 2 when it starts filming. Come inside to find out why Director Tim Miller is leaving the sequel.
In a Deadline exclusive, we learned over the weekend that Director Tim Miller is exiting the Deadpool 2 project after creative differences with star, Ryan Reynolds. The news comes as a shock to all of us, as there were no public indications of any kind of turmoil. As for the reason for the creative differences, 20th Century Fox and all those involved aren't saying much.
While it sounds very dramatic, sources confirmed that there is no ill-will between Miller, Reynolds, and Fox. In fact, the departure actually frees Miller to begin working on Fox's next assignment Influx, an adaptation of the Daniel Suarez novel set to become a trilogy.
Miller exiting can also be a good thing for Deadpool 2.

There is nothing quite like driving to work in an ice storm to make you realize you are nothing more than a rat in a fucking maze. As my car spun out at 20mph on ice-covered roads I had to wonder "What the Fuck am I doing?" And more importantly why did my employer, which cares So deeply for its employees, not delay start time or cancel the day outright in this treachery?
Once upon a time you went to work out of high school or college, put in your 30 years or so, and then retired with a nice pension. Those days are long gone. People are considered the same as pens and fax machines: easily replaceable and totally disposable. The idea of the employee as a valuable and necessary, unique component of the company has mutated into something much more disturbing. Now we are supposed to feel Grateful to...

Freedom™ is the greatest ever liberal utopian fantasy featuring autonomous killer motorcycles. Daniel Suarez’s sequel to his popular Daemon, the story of a deeply buried computer program that slowly takes over the world, Freedom™ expands on some of the original book’s ideas of how using computer networks as a model for rebuilding society could work, and its vision of a program that turns the world into one big Mmorpg is endlessly creative. But the book is also highly problematic, with Suarez biting off more than he can chew throughout. Suarez has gotten lots of praise for how much ...

Paramount has bought the rights to Daniel Suarez's novel, Daemon, which they plan to turn into what sounds like a surprisingly cheesy move. The film centers around a computer programmer who creates some software designed to kill mankind. The novel and film are named after a type of computer software that can run on it's own. THR reports that the film will be produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. THR has dubbed the film a "techno-thriller." Daemon will take place after the afore-mentioned computer programmer dies, ala I, Robot. The movie will follow what happens in the case of machines gaining the desire to kill humans and the autonomy to do so. If done well, this movie could probably be only mediocre. If done terribly, this movie could be one of the worst films ever made. It is tricky exploring a subject that has been traversed by so...
