Welcome to "Dark/Web" Wednesdays, a (mostly) weekly column where we bring you the latest news, photos, set videos, and details from the upcoming digital series, "Dark/Web," which is set to hit the site in 2017! In case you’re new to the column:
"Dark/Web" follows a group of young adults navigating a near future where everything’s online and everyone’s connected, whether they like it or not.
When Ethan (Elerding), Sam (McKissack) and James (Nardelli) find themselves the target of cryptic emails from someone posing as their childhood friend Molly (Gonzales), they assume she’s been the victim of an all-too-common hack. After they reach out to alert her, however, they discover that Molly’s been missing for months and no one has any idea what happened to her. As the emails keep coming, each containing a tale written by Molly, her friends realize that this may...

With writer/director Samuel Gonzalez, Jr.’s urban legend-inspired short Woodland Heights set for its La premiere Friday, October 11, at 9:30pm at the Screamfest Film Festival, read on for our exclusive chat with the filmmaker and star Arielle Brachfeld.
Produced by Roxy Shih from a script by Gonzalez, Woodland Heights stars Arielle Brachfeld (Chemical Peel) and James Preston and revolves around a young couple’s prom night which takes a bizarre turn for the worse. Based on the classic urban legend of "The Hook" and in the tradition of 1950’s drive-in horror films, the black & white flick’s tag-line reads: "There is no terror in the bang; only in the anticipation of it."
Speaking with Gonzalez, he said of what inspired him to do a period piece, “When I was young, I would always search for films that allowed me to experience a new world or time period. Living...

★★☆☆☆ Sumptuous looks and an enticing central subject may be enough to attract audiences to Matthew Mishory's A Portrait Of James Dean: Joshua Tree, 1951, but what it possesses in visual beauty, it sadly lacks in substance. Opening oddly to a prologue involving poet Arthur Rimbaud, we are quickly transported to 1950s La where we meet undergrad James Dean at UCLA. James Preston plays the legendary (yet short-lived) screen star and certainly has the looks of the doomed Hollywood icon, sporting wavy curls and thick-rimmed Ray-Ban wayfarers, capturing an enjoyable level of petulance, with his languished looks.
We see Dean interact with fellow students in acting classes overseen by his theatre professor (David Pevsnor), drunken sex-scenes with other young men and scenes of him hanging by the pool, topping up his tan with predatory agent Roger (Edward Singletary) at his side. This is accompanied by the odd scene in the desert at Joshua Tree,...

Tampa, Fla. — A Florida juror who voted to convict Jamaican reggae singer Buju Banton on drug charges has denied improperly researching the case during trial, despite a weekly newspaper's report that quoted her as saying that she did.
Banton is serving a 10-year prison sentence for his convictions on cocaine conspiracy and trafficking charges stemming from a 2009 arrest. The Grammy winner faces an additional five years for his conviction on a related gun possession charge, but his resentencing hearing was postponed to investigate the report of juror misconduct.
Banton's attorneys have filed a motion in Tampa federal court seeking a new trial. If granted, it would be the second mistrial for Banton, whose first trial in 2010 ended with jurors deadlocked. He was convicted in 2011 in his second trial.
U.S. District Judge James Moody reserved judgment Thursday on the defense motion.

Wolfe Releasing has acquired American and Canadian rights to Matthew Mishory's "A Portrait of James Dean: Joshua Tree, 1951." The film, which stars James Preston in the title role, offers an intimate look at Dean as an up-and-comer in Los Angeles just before widespread recognition of his status as a major talent -- and, ultimately, an icon. "Joshua Tree" has screened at the Seattle International Film Festival, the Rio International Film Festival, the Frameline Festival and elsewhere. Wolfe will release "Joshua Tree" in 2013 on VOD and DVD. Wolfe president Maria Lynn collaborated with representatives from The Film Collaborative and Iconoclastic Features to broker the deal. ...

Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait of James Dean
Written and directed by Matthew Mishory
USA, 2012
Let’s posit a hypothetical – what if the iconic James Dean was gay? Well, let’s answer one hypothetical question with another – what if Fellini made a Dolce & Gabbana commercial instead of La Dolce Vita?
What does one have to do with the other? Absolutely nothing, but that seems to be all that happens in Matthew Mishory’s Joshua Tree, 1951: A Portrait of James Dean. A film with plenty of flare but a shocking lack of form, Joshua Tree is all pomp and no circumstance.
Set in his early career, the film follows the life of James Dean (James Preston), from his acting classes in university, to his emergence as an up-and-coming Hollywood prospect. With sequences inspired by sexual speculation, the film interweaves a series of libidinous sketches to form a sensuous, and definitively homoerotic,...

A man comes too on the floor of an apartment and the TV plays in the background, a scene about self defence and not being believed. He leaves on his bike. A jury and judge arrive to view a Cs and the judge is shot by a shooter on a bike. Mac (Gary Sinise) picks up his rolling cigar. Flack (Eddie Cahill) comments the criminal court judge was shot under the noses of the cops and the jury was sequestered. Judge Vinnie Corsica (Brad Blaisdell) was presiding over the Markov trial, a Russian mobster. Danny (Carmine Giovinazzo) talks about him being the "Sammy Bull of Russian organized crime and Markov has "a dozen bodies on him." Mac: "Looks like it just went to a baker's dozen." While a second season on ABC seems like a real long shot, ABC hasn't officially cancelled The Gates (unlike say, My Generation). One of the show's stars however has been told that there won't be a second season.
The Gates follows a Chicago police detective (Frank Grillo) who moves his family to a gated suburban community to become the neighborhood's security chief. They soon discover that their new neighbors aren't as normal as they appear to be. The large cast includes Andrea Powell, Rhona Mitra, Marisol Nichols, Luke Mably, Travis Caldwell, Skyler Samuels, Chandra West, Colton Haynes, Janina Gavankar, Justin Miles, Victoria Gabrielle Platt, James Preston, Georgia Cole, Johnny Messner, Brett Cullen, Shannon Lucio, Devyn A. Tyler, McKaley Miller, and Louis Herthum.
Ratings expectations are lower in the summer months but the suburban supernatural series averaged only a 0.9 rating in the all-important 18-49...

Shia Labeouf is the best value in Hollywood, with his pictures earning $81 for every dollar they pay him in salary. I’m not sure if that means he’s a bankable star, or a cheap date.

To view the oppression of women under the Taliban as 'a small price to pay' is breathtaking
James Fergusson's claim that many Afghan women saw oppression under the Taliban as "a small price to pay" after the conflict of the 1990s is breathtaking ("Should British soldiers be dying for the rights of Afghan women? No", Comment).
Are Afghan women supposed to be grateful to a group that prevented all girls from attending school, confined women to their own homes, and left women's healthcare in shreds?
Whether or not the Taliban leadership saw themselves as oppressors, the fact is they were. And they still are. On the same day that Mr Fergusson's article appeared, the Taliban stoned to death a young man and woman for the "crime" of adultery.
The need for Afghan women to have a direct say in their future – as required under Un resolutions (1325, 1820) – has never been more important.

Though ABC didn't have much luck with their Eastwick drama, the network is trying another kind of supernatural series, The Gates, for the summer months. Will this one make it to season two?
The Gates revolves around a big city cop who moves his family to a quiet gated community where many of the residents aren't exactly what they appear to be. The ensemble cast includes Rhona Mitra, Colton Haynes, Frank Grillo, Janina Gavankar, Chandra West, Luke Mably, James Preston, Marisol Nichols, Skyler Samuels, Travis Caldwell, Victoria Platt, and Justin Miles.
The series debuted on Sunday, June 20th, to an unimpressive 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.78 million viewers. Considering all of the network's promotion, this was a disappointing start. The premiere ranked first in the demo and second in total viewers for the timeslot.

Just weeks ago, AfterElton’s Great Gay brought us some prime choices for gay-themed summer programming for when it's too hot to go outside. You know, television to tide us over until Glee, Brothers & Sisters and Paula’s Best Dishes return in the fall.
Don’t judge me for that last one.
But believe it or not, there are some summer shows sans homo that are also worth watching.
Take a minute to let that sink in. I was shocked, too.
Here are eight possibilities – some suggested by readers like yourself, because you do have fine taste after all. And, to ensure your viewing pleasure is the best possible experience, I’ll let you know the quality of the program (Aka how hot the male leads are as well as the quality of the actual show) on a scale of one to five hot summer lifeguards.
Grab your remotes and let’s get started!
