Embodying every cliché of the working class New York City loudmouth is long-time local legend Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, an organization of do-gooders who formed in 1977 in a McDonalds on Fordham Road in the Bronx. His new documentary Vigilante: The Incredible True Story of Curits Sliwa and the Guardian Angels, directed by David Wexler, is an entertaining yet one-sided look at the organization told mostly through an extended interview with Sliwa and archival footage of New York in the Ed Koch, David Dinkins, and Rudy Giuliani eras. The lattermost mayor would finally give credit to the Guardian Angels while Koch and the NYPD fought against the collective, which initially was founded as a neighborhood watch. Only later as crack rock hit the poorest neighborhoods of color would the Angels become more proactive, robbing crack dealers, throwing the product in the sewer, and giving the cash proceeds to soup kitchens.

Twenty-five years ago this month, Spike Lee released his third feature film and, inarguably, his greatest joint: Do the Right Thing, the story of tensions between the local residents and an Italian-American family in the black neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, on the hottest day of the summer. The film was a trenchant exploration of the racial politics of New York City at the time, from incendiary trash-talking to police violence and an ensuing riot — even extending to the graffiti on the wall reading "Tawana Told The Truth." (Tawana Brawley...

The news that Richard Brick passed away at age 68 is sad news for me, and the Gotham production community. Back when I was covering the New York production business closely, Brick became the film commissioner in 1992 under David Dinkins. This was right after New York went through a devastating production boycott by major studios that refused to shoot in the city until the unions agreed to help them make the location less expensive by becoming more reasonable on issues like overtime, staffing requirements and other issues. Brick, a Columbia U grad and a New York guy through and through, came in after being line producer on such films as Silkwood, Ragtime and Places In The Heart. His knowledge of how movies actually got made and his tireless energy made him an important player at a pivotal time. That included streamlining the permitting process. Related: R.I.P. Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch, whose folksy yet firm style guided the metropolis from 1978 to 1989, died of congestive heart failure in New York Presbyterian/Columbia Hospital early Friday morning, his spokesman confirmed to news outlets. He was 88. Koch, who had a long history of cardiac problems, made repeated visits to the hospital in the past six months. His latest took place this week, forcing him to miss Tuesday night's Museum of Modern Art premiere of a documentary film about his life, Koch, which opens in limited release on Friday.
