Aiming to stand out in a crowded field, broadcasters this season have leaned on the stability of their schedules and the return of established hits. But for many of the same reasons, they’ve also begun to seed the ground for next year’s crop of shows, considering that top performers like “How to Get Away With Murder,” “Empire” and “Supernatural” are on the way out. Indeed, the development for the 2020-21 season has been picking up steam, with a number of projects already announced. A key for network buyers: shows that will further refine their brands.

Fox has hired Elliot Kalan, Emmy winning head writer of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and Jenny Jaffe, writer of Big Hero 6: The Series and the Rugrats reboot, to write the upcoming animated comedy series Saloon.
Deadline offers the following description of the series:
Saloon “is set in the frontier outpost of Timmy’s Town. Kevin (a woman) runs the local saloon, McClanahan’s, where she functions as the townspeople’s unofficial leader/therapist/protector. At the other side of Timmy’s Town is do-gooder Sheriff Stacey Leslie (a man) whose only mission is to close Kevin’s “sinful” bar and run her out of town for good.”
This sounds like a funny and interesting series in totally capable hands. The report goes on to say the series will be atypical and will tackle “provocative topics through satire.” That sounds like an animated Fox show to me! Does...

In a year when the growing role of Netflix in Hollywood raised age-old fears about the death of cinema, the question of what is television versus a movie versus a web series grew ever murkier. As younger audiences become increasingly blasé about the difference, preferring streaming sites to the movie theater experience, production companies are scrambling to engage them with quality online content. At the same time, the internet remains the easiest way for emerging filmmakers to get their work seen without having to rely on meddling middlemen or jaded gatekeepers.

Among the many folks who rolled their eyes at the “Fifty Shades of Grey” phenomenon, there exists a surprising faction of critics: The proudly kinky. Not only did the books and subsequent films get a lot of things dangerously wrong about Bdsm, they say, but “Fifty Shades” was seriously devoid of the joy or playfulness that leads many practitioners to don leather bodices and ball gags. That questionable lack of humor is what led Jenny Jaffe to write “Neurotica,” a bite-sized series about a dominatrix with Ocd currently running on IFC’s Comedy Crib.
The idea began percolating for Jaffe around the time that “Fifty Shades” started taking off. “It was so self-serious and dour,” she said. “There was clearly an appetite for stories about kink, but I found it really strange that the topic gets approached with this really heavy hand. Human sexuality is so expansive and funny, and when it’s good,...

Last spring, Jenny Jaffe described all the ways New Girl could save itself in season five, and the number one requirement was that the loft gang stick together. A flood of minor characters and storylines that pull everyone apart simply aren't a recipe for a good sitcom. Blessedly, as though showrunner Liz Meriwether heard the call, the first episode of season five is so locked into the unity theme that it might as well have been 23 minutes of the gang singing kumbaya around a campfire. (That didn't exactly happen, but I'd love to see a Mahatmoves Gandhi rendition of summer-camp classics.)After the rocky patches of season four, it's great to see New Girl return to its strengths, even if the narrative seems too on-the-nose. "Year of us!" Jess keeps yelling, and it's obviously a bid to persuade the audience along with the lofties. But if that's what it takes...

You could argue (and I would, although not in this post) that the two biggest cultural happenings this year are Hamilton: An American Musical and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. So when The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams revealed that he had secretly collaborated with Hamilton writer/composer/star Lin-Manuel Miranda on the music for a new cantina scene, twitter exploded in mashup memes and gifs. You know, the way twitter does. They are all collected under #Force4Ham, and they are worth checking out. I’ve included a few of my favorites, plus a special treat from Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton’s Music Director, orchestrator, and co-arranger.
All of the tweets in this collection feature stills or gifs from Star Wars paired with lyrics from Hamilton. They are the most accessible to people unfamiliar with the show. If these pique your interest in the show, you can (and should!) check...

On last night's New Girl fans were in for a rude awakening. Zooey Deschanel's sweetly crooned intro, the one with the brightly painted set pieces, had disappeared in place of a series of cast photos. Even more distressing, Deschanel's "who's that girl?" vocals were also no longer around, just the slightly amended tune remaining. I, for one, will miss it all. Fox confirmed to EW that last night was the first episode with the new credits, which are the ones that will be used in future episodes. After giving actor Matthew Lillard what will likely always be his best performance in Slc Punk, director James Merendino has pretty much fallen to the wayside. Though he once attracted names like Harvey Keitel and Billy Bob Thornton to his project The Swedish Job, that project completely fell apart and since then he's been unable to round up much name talent or attention for his films. Maybe jumping on the bandwagon will help as The Playlist reports Merendino will direct a musical comedy called Vampire Summer Camp (yes, another vampire flick) which he also wrote with Jenny Jaffe, a writer with only one obscure film to her name. In what seems like an aim to capitalize on the popularity of vampires and Fox's musical series "Glee," the film follows two summer camps and the musical competition they embark upon. But one camp is populated with youthful-looking, but centuries old vampires,...
