Moreover, like the community organizations patronized by the War on Poverty in the 1960s, Third World NGOs have proven brilliant at coopting local leadership as well as hegemonizing the social space traditionally occupied by the Left.—Mike Davis, Planet of Slums “J’aide.” —Alex, Murder in PacotThere’s a dead boy under the rubble and a wretched smell in the air. Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Camilo Restrepo's Impression of a War (2015), is showing from August 10 - September 9, 2017 in most countries around the world as part of our Direct from Locarno series. “Why, why, why!” screamed a woman as she tore at the twisted and charred wreckage of a car in the hope of finding the body of her young daughter, whom she had left inside. The force of the blast hurled the remains of the vehicle into the front of a furniture store.—The New York Times, April 16, 1993In any event, ordinary Colombians celebrated the tenth anniversary of the slaying of their most famous billionaire criminal with little optimism that the car-bombings would ever cease. While the Colombian army and rightwing militia persist in murdering trade unionists, oppositional journalists, and leaders of the legal Left, the corrupted guerillas of [the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia] defiantly maintain Escobar’s...

Há Terra!I want to apologize for providing this Wavelengths avant-garde preview a little later than I might've liked. Hell, given that it's been over a week since movies died, I'm not exactly sure how much more kindling I can chuck onto the pyre. But I should remark that compared with previous years' iterations of the Tiff Wavelengths series, 2016 does feel a bit...off. I'm chiefly referring to the experimental short films here. (My second part, addressing the Wavelengths features, will be along in a matter of days.) Make no mistake. There's plenty of great work in this year's programs. But I do feel that the disparity this year between the truly exceptional films and the mediocre-to-not-very-good ones is markedly high.I enjoy films, and more than this, I enjoy enjoying them. I hardly get my kicks by being a nattering nabob of negativity. But programmers have to work with what is available to them,...

There are few more evocative first lines in 20th-century American literature than that of James M. Cain's 1934 novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice. "They threw me off the hay truck about noon," begins the book's narrator, an amoral drifter named Frank Chambers. He soon finds himself near a roadside sandwich joint called the Twin Oaks Tavern, a spot that, Chambers says, is "like a million others in California." But bad things happen at this rural little diner — things like adultery, kinky sex and first-degree murder. The book's sinister series...

Like some elaborate act of God and conspiracy that crosses timelines and layers of philosophy and perspective worthy of True Detective itself, a dense conversation has formed over the last week regarding whether True Detective showrunner Nic Pizzolato plagiarized the character and idea of Rust Cohle off of similar ideas in the book Conspiracies Against the Human Race by Thomas Ligotti. The debate first started when writer Mike Davis over at The Lovecraft Zine posted an interview he conducted with the head of Thomas Ligotti online, Jon Padgett. The article cites numerous instances of fairly similar expressions and turns of phrase that feel inspired by the Ligotti novel from 2010, including arguments that Pizzolato only brought up Ligotti in interviews when prodded and never alluded to the author on the DVD commentary. Padgett alleged that this was particularly serious because Rust’s character helped make the show unique:

HBO and Nic Pizzolatto have responded to recent allegations that the writer and showrunner of “True Detective” plagiarized parts of his Emmy-nominated show. “True Detective is a work of exceptional originality and the story, plot, characters and dialogue are that of Nic Pizzolatto,” HBO said in a statement. Also read: ‘True Detective’ Plot Details Emerge; Vince Vaughn in Talks, Elisabeth Moss Circling The show has come under fire in recent days when horror fansite The Lovecraft E-Zine founder Mike Davis and Thomas Ligotti Online founder John Padgett published on Monday their evidence that themes and even dialogue from Pizzolatto's show bore too.

There is a fine line to be walked between homage and plagiarism, particularly in our current, pastiche-crazy culture. Filmmakers have been accused of lifting large sections of novels, plays, poetry, and other films to be cast pell-mell into their own works, prompting accusations of “hack” work as well as praise for these directors as post-modern pastiche artists. But what happens when whole sections of dialogue are lifted from other works and remain unattributed in a film or television show? Is that homage, plagiarism, or some nebulous category in between?
That’s the issue now facing the hit show True Detective and writer/creator Nic Pizzolatto. Pizzolatto is being accused of plagiarizing work by the horror writer Thomas Ligotti, among others, and using it in dialogue without attributing it. Conversation has begun between The Lovecraft E-zine‘s Mike Davis and Thomas Ligotti Online‘s founder Jon Padgett (via The Playlist), to...

"The only honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming, stop reproducing and march hand-in-hand into extinction," the always cheerful Rust Cohle says in the memorable, meme-inspiring car conversation sequence from "True Detective." That line and many others from the sequence are heavily indebted to the work of horror writer Thomas Ligotti, in particular his book "The Conspiracy Against the Human Race." While series creator Nic Pizzolatto has cited Ligotti for his influence on the show, two horror scholars have alleged that he stepped over the line from homage to plagiarism. A discussion is in progress over at The Lovecraft E-zine, involving the site's Mike Davis and Thomas Ligotti Online founder Jon Padgett: the two are conversing over email about Pizzolatto's use of Ligotti, and the latter makes a vigorous case that that the "True Detective" writer crossed an ethical line. Providing many examples...

Since the days of Walter Payton, Franco Harris, and Barry Sanders, the Running Back has evolved into one of the best if not the best athlete on the field today. A combination of speed, power, and agility are characteristics of the best running backs on the professional and college level today. Some of the most prolific players in football history excelled as Heisman Trophy winners and NFL MVPs, without them, football would be a much different sport than we know it as today.
Here are five of the best Running Backs in College Football who will leave defenses in the dust in 2014:
Honorable Mentions:
Travis Greene, Bowling Green (279 carries, 1,594 yards, 11 TDs)
-The former Wide Receiver found his calling in the backfield for the Falcons in 2013, rushing for 1,594 yards, good for 11th nationally and 2nd in the Mid American Conference this year.

Ah, Star Wars, without a doubt, the greatest trilogy in the history of cinema—yes, greater than The Lord Of The Rings.
Prequels you ask? What Prequels? I only believe in the original trilogy; the prequels do not exist as far as I’m concerned—I am what you might call, a prequel “non-believer.” Or to put it another way, if the entire saga (i.e., all six episodes as a whole) is to be regarded as dogma, then consider me an Episode IV-to-vi heretic.
Thus, for all my fellow Star Wars heretics out there—which I’m assuming is most of you (okay, George Lucas idolatrists are invited as well)—a slew of new behind-the-scenes material has recently surfaced from the making of The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi.

Talking cars will no longer be just a "Knight Rider" fantasy. Nuance Communications today revealed Dragon Drive, the newest addition to the Dragon Dictation family.
The product is like having Siri in your car, but unlike Apple's official deal with Mercedes-Benz to make Siri a feature in new A-Class models, Dragon Drive won't be limited to one manufacturer.
Dragon Drive expands current vehicle voice command technology by connecting the console to 3G and 4G networks. Currently, voice commands are limited to basic tasks such as music or temperature controls because of the vehicle software's inability to process and understand higher-level commands. But with access to the cloud, cars will be able to recognize speech commands and interpret both content and intent, as Siri does for iPhone users.
All it will take is the press of a button on the steering wheel to activate the Dragon software. Spoken commands will be...

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....there was a time when George Lucas hadn't ruined the Star Wars franchise with three brutally bad prequels, and new cuts of the original films. Come take a look at the brilliant set designs for Return of the Jedi that if remade by Lucas today would not exist, but would be some sort of green screen trash. It was the Spring of 1982. In the Southern California desert region known as Buttercup Valley, cameras were rolling on a film called Blue Harvest: Horror Beyond Imagination. A SoCal science-fiction nut named Mike Davis had heard rumors about the production just having gotten under way. He and his pals decided to pack up some camping supplies and go check it out. This was the 1980s, a time when film productions were able to remain much more secretive than they do today, due...

The following photographs were taken by Mike Davis and a group of friends who ventured out into the southern California desert back in 1982 to check out a rumor of some sci-fi film being filmed out in the sands. The name of the production being filmed was Blue Harvest: Horror Beyond Imagination, and what they found was actually the set of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
Talk about discovering buried treasure…

Here are some cool new images from the set of Return of the Jedi. The pictures were taken by a group of Star Wars fans who stumbled upon a the Jedi set.
Here is a description of the events from Blastr:
In the spring of 1982, a fella named Mike Davis gathered a bunch of friends and decided to investigate a chunk of southern California desert called Buttercup Valley, where they'd heard that a new sci-fi film called Blue Harvest: Horror Beyond Imagination was filming.
When they got there, they discovered Jabba the Hutt's pleasure barge, R2-D2 without his lid on and Princess Leia relaxing in the sun. Not a bad day for a bunch of fans and their pre-digital cameras.
