There’s rarely anything that Star Trek fans like to do more than talk (and argue) about Star Trek, but there’s one thing that an increasing number of them do agree on: Seth MacFarlane’s love letter to Trek, The Orville, has turned out to be surprisingly great.
Family Guy creator MacFarlane first debuted his sci-fi comedy series to a dubious audience back in 2017, and after a wobbly start it gained a faithful fan base. MacFarlane had written himself a plum lead role as the 25th century captain an exploratory space vessel with a diverse crew, and the series has often played with ‘story of the week’ standalone episodes that are more akin to The Next Generation’s glory days than the likes of Star Trek: Discovery, which seemed more interested in sticking with season-long arcs.
Indeed, both shows have their merits but they’re very different, and while...

Filmmaker Mark Jackson initially gained attention with his debut feature Without and then followed that up with War Story, both described as harrowing dramas that peered deeply into the human condition. His latest work of narrative fiction, This Teacher, captivated festival audiences and is now heading to release on DVD and VOD on June 9. It, too, is fairly described as harrowing, as the trailer amply demonstrates. The film "follows a French Muslim woman (Hafsia Herzi) as she travels to New York City from the rough neighborhoods outside of Paris to visit her childhood best friend. "When the reunion proves disastrous, Hafsia steals her friend's credit card and identity, then disappears to a remote cabin upstate. Deep in the woods and alone for the first...

Seth MacFarlane’s incredibly well-made Star Trek inspired sci-fi series The Orville has made a big move. It was revealed at Comic-Con during the panel for the series that the upcoming Season 3 would air on Hulu instead of Fox, which has been the home for the series for the first two seasons.
According to Variety, the reason for the change is because of MacFarlane’s current workload and “the length of time it takes to finish work on the show’s numerous special effects sequences would have meant that Season 3 would not have been ready for a midseason debut.”
The upcoming episodes are now expected to launch on Hulu at the end of 2020. MacFarlane explained the situation for the change in a statement:
“The Orville has been a labor of love for me, and there are two companies which have supported that vision in a big way: 20th Century Fox Television,...

The NBA Finals will cross international borders when it tips off Thursday, with the Toronto Raptors becoming the first team outside the United States to play for the NBA title. But while they may be celebrating up in the North, the lack of a second U.S. home market will likely put a dent in the TV ratings for ABC.
Outside of the Super Bowl, TV ratings in sports championships come down to two key ingredients: The size of the two teams’ home markets and the competitiveness of the series. In that first one, ABC is already working at a disadvantage.
The Raptors, outside of the camera-shy Kawhi Leonard, don’t have many household names the average fan would know either. In fact, the Raptors’ biggest star just might be Drake, who is something of a team ambassador, and frequently makes headlines with his antics from his courtside seats. On the other side,...

Seth MacFarlane’s fantastic sci-fi series The Orville has been renewed for a third season by Fox! I love this show! It’s one of those series that just seems to get better and better as it goes on. Season 1 was so great, but Season 2 was even better! That being said, I’m incredibly excited to see what the creative team has in store for Season 3!
The story for the series is set 400 years in the future, and it follows the crew of the U.S.S. Orville, “a mid-level exploratory spaceship stocked with a crew of both humans and aliens who have to balance complications in space, as well as everyday personal and relationship problems.”
The series was created by MacFarlane, who also stars in the series alongside Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, J Lee, Mark Jackson, Chad L. Coleman and Jessica Szohr.

The Afghanimals, aka Leo Temory and Jamal Zadran, and Rachel Reilly are competing on “The Amazing Race” for the third time, and if either team wins Season 31 — Rachel’s racing with her sister, Elissa Slater — it’d mark a first, because no one who’s been on “Race” three times has won the $1 million yet.
Granted, there’s not a lot of people who’ve raced thrice. The Afghanimals and Rachel are the eighth, ninth and 10th people to do so. Season 24, which aired in 2014, was the first season to feature three-timers, but the third time was definitely not the charm for those seven. They are:

Former “X Factor” champion Shayne Ward will star in homegrown British horror movie “Skendleby.” Mark Jackson (“The Orville”) and Niamh McGrady (“The Fall”) will also star.
Ward triumphed on the second-ever edition of the “X Factor” in the U.K. in 2005 before going on to build an acting career and starring in iconic British soap “Coronation Street.” He has now signed to play archaeologist Dr. Giles Glover in “Skendleby,” which hails from Rebekah Louisa Smith’s fledgling Doctor Rebekah Productions banner.
Smith has hitherto been known for her work for running the film festival consultancy business The Film Festival Doctor. Having helped producers through the festival maze, she has now branched out into production herself.
“Skendleby” tells the story of an ancient curse lurking within the estate of Skendleby Hall. It will shoot in the U.K., starting next April, with an all-British cast.
It is Ward’s second big-screen role.

For most of its runtime, This Teacher plays things close to the chest. In its tale of a vacation gone bad, director/co-writer Mark Jackson flirts with different ideas and themes, only to switch up the plot the moment the film feels like it’s about to settle into place. It’s a good tactic in making This Teacher maintain a sense of intrigue, but once Jackson shows his hand in the final act, he exposes himself as a filmmaker better suited to build-up than following things through. After taking the shape of several different genres and styles, Jackson and co-writer Dana Thompson’s screenplay ends up becoming a reductive political statement, one that’s proud to declare itself a “post-Trump” film in its look at ignorance and hatred.
Not that there’s anything wrong with being political or direct, but execution matters, and This Teacher’s execution feels like...

We have the exclusive first look at the poster one sheet for Mark Jackson‘s award-winning This Teacher — a Grand Jury prize winner at Laff, BFI London selection and 2019 Slamdance Film Festival closing film. In a role that was written for actress Hafsia Herzi (previously seen in Jackson’s sophomore feature (2014’s War Story) as well as three of Bertrand Bonello’s House of Tolerance and three films signed by Abdellatif Kechiche), this sees a Muslim woman’s vacation to New York devolve into a nightmare.

The Menendez brothers may not be part of official collectible sets of killer trading cards — which sparked outrage when they were first introduced in 1992 and have continued to be controversial as new editions pop up every few years — but their surprise cameo on an NBA trading card means collectors of murder memorabilia can probably still include them in their decks.

One of the entertainment industry’s most notorious murders has been spotlighted in a most unlikely place – a basketball trading card.
Lyle and Erik Menendez, the Beverly Hills brothers who brutally killed their father and mother, entertainment executive José Menéndez and his wife Mary (Kitty), are depicted on a Hoops trading card from the 1990-1991 season.
The brothers were captured calmly sitting courtside on the card, an action shot featuring former Knicks guard Mark Jackson.
The eerie coincidence was noticed earlier this week and has since gone viral after being posted on Reddit. The photo would have been taken before they were arrested for the murders in 1990.
After a mistrial and deadlocked juries, the brothers – who claimed they were sexually and emotionally abused and feared for their own lives – were later re-tried and convicted in 1996 of two counts...

Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi comedy adventure series The Orville turned out to be a super entertaining show! It ended up being more than just a Star Trek parody and comedy. It told some great stories and introduced us to some wonderful characters.
It’s almost been a year since Season 1 came to a close, but today we have a new teaser trailer for Season 2 giving us a glimpse at the new missions and epic new adventures that awaits the crew of The Orville. It looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun and I’m excited for the return of this show!

Eight years ago, the La Film Festival hosted June premieres in downtown Los Angeles for a pair of decidedly high-profile movies — “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and “Despicable Me.”
The festival’s 24th edition, which launches Thursday night, will be very different. Film Independent moved the festival from downtown two years ago to the Arclight venues. Tentpoles are long gone. And it’s moved out of summer and into awards season.
It’s not easy for large-scale, general interest film festivals to make an impact in such a sprawling city, where many people are too busy making movies to watch movies. And some filmgoers focus their attention on the dozens of local niche festivals catering to every interest from horror to French films, with Lgbt-focused Outfest claiming to draw the highest paid attendance of any Los Angeles festival.
