Set to take place this weekend is the African Diaspora International Film Festival's celebration of women in film, which runs from March 27 to 29, at Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York City. The lineup of shorts, features and documentaries by independent women filmmakers from all over the world, includes 11 films from six countries (Cuba, Haiti, Brazil, USA, Senegal & Cape Verde). Two of those films are from late Senegalese filmmaker, Khady Sylla, a great filmmaker talent despite a rather short filmography with just 5 total films, most of which haven't been seen widely enough. The 2 that will screen this weekend are:...

Yesterday, Tiff’s Wavelengths program unveiled a Locarno-heavy line-up of feature-length films that all aim to push the cinematic medium to its breaking point. Highlights include new films by Pedro Costa’s first “proper” feature in eight years, Horse Money (scarequotes because Ne change rien really is quite a singular, musky piece of work – see pic above); Eugène Green’s typically Baroque La Sapienza; 338 minutes of gruelling Filipino mastery from Lav Diaz in the form of From What is Before; Yoo Soon-mi’s essay film on the tensions between North and South Korea, Songs From the North; and The Princess of France, Matías Piñeiro’s follow-up to his breakout revisionist Shakespeare drama. Other features include Tsai Ming-liang’s sixth and longest entry in his Walker series, Journey to the West (complete with a Denis Lavant (Holy Motors) cameo); Cannes hits like Sergei Loznitsa’s Maidan and Lisandro Alonso’s Jauja...

African women filmmakers have a very hard time to have a voice in the concert of voices that today resonate in African cinema. The names of Safi Faye, Fanta Nacro, Khady Sylla, Wanuri Kahiu, Ana Lisboa, Nadia El Fani and many more are not well known. However, many of them have a body of work that is impressive as they go into areas that many of the male filmmakers don't even think about. Khady Sylla died last week at the age of 50 and she was an important personality in the context of Senegalese intellectual life. She was a writer, a filmmaker and a thinker. Her point of view about Islam and society, expressed in Angèle Diabang Brener film Islam and Women of...

ArtMattan Productions is pleased to announce the acquisition of Khady Syllla's The Silent Monologue/Le Monologue de la Muette, co-directed with Charlie Van Damme, a 45-minute visual and poetic analysis of the life of maids in Senegal reminiscent of Ousmane Sembene's classic Black Girl. The Silent Monologue follows the life of Amy who, at a very young age, is sent to Dakar to work for a Senegalese family. In Black Girl, Ousmane Sembene zoomed on the life of a Senegalese maid working for a white French family in Senegal and France. Khady Sylla does not leave her native Senegal and the team behind the camera gives us a very incisive analysis of an African society, its casts and...
