“Here I am playing this ethereal non-human being in ‘Usher,’ and my biggest task was to saddle her with a humanity,” declares Carla Gugino about portraying a mysterious angel of death in Mike Flanagan‘s latest horror limited series “The Fall of the House of Usher.” For our recent webchat she adds, “It was cool to juxtapose between this raven perched on a branch watching humanity and all of their foibles, and also because I was able to play these seven different incarnations of this character, each one of those incarnations really needed to be fully human.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Violent crime drama Gangs of London is back for a third series, the cast has been confirmed.
After revitalising action cinema with the two astonishing martial arts films in The Raid franchise, Gareth Evans turned to television, co-creating Gangs of London with Matt Flannery in 2019.
A sprawling crime saga, the show follows the Wallace family as they grapple to keep control of their criminal empire. And we’ve had two series of it so far, with plenty of memorable moments to talk about.
The show became known for its notoriously violent action scenes, which are as visceral and gory as anything seen in a big screen slasher. Unsurprisingly, given Evans’ involvement, the work that went into those scenes was really quite something. And now, with season three confirmed and on its way, we wait to see

With Mike Flanagan’s latest, the Edgar Allen Poe-inspired The Fall of the House of Usher, production designer Laurin Kelsey had a lot of houses on her hands.
The Netflix horror series goes full-tilt into Poe, complete with episode titles referencing one of his notable works, and the main home of the series’ patriarch (played by Bruce Greenwood) being a twist on the one featured in the late writer’s original short story. It also stars Mary McDonnell, Henry Thomas, T’Nia Miller, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, Sauriyan Sapkota, Kyliegh Curran, Carla Gugino, Carly Lumbly, Zack Gilford and Willa Fitzgerald.

Four years ago, it was announced that Ben Wheatley would be writing, directing, and executive producing Generation Z, a “hilarious, frightening, and political” series that would consist of six hour-long episodes that would “mix flesh-eating zombies into a story that satirizes how Brexit has divided the UK.” That project didn’t make it into production when it was originally supposed to because of the pandemic shutdown… but after making his latest film Meg 2: The Trench (you can read our review at This Link and check out our interview with the filmmaker Here), Wheatley has circled back around to Generation Z and is now knee-deep into filming it! To celebrate the fact that Generation Z is finally being made, Channel 4 has unveiled a batch of first look images, and you can check those out at the bottom of this article.

Kill List, Free Fire, and High-Rise director Ben Wheatley announced plans for the Brexit zombie series “Generation Z” for UK’s Channel 4 back in 2019. UK broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled first look images at the six-part series, along with its cast.
Channel 4 describes the series as a “coming-of-age parable for our very strange times – cut with a heavy dose of outlandish gore.” Check out the first look images below.
The plot for the six-part series: “In a small British town, tensions come to a head when a mysterious military convoy crashes outside the Sunnywise Retirement Home. The vehicles were carrying a toxic substance, which, as a result of the crash, leaks into the local environment and infects the residents of the retirement community. The symptoms of this infection quickly manifest – an overwhelming appetite for raw flesh. They’re old, they’re angry and they’re on the rampage. As the...

This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher.
As its title suggests, Mike Flanagan’s latest project for Netflix, The Fall of the House of Usher, is an intensely Edgar Allan Poe affair. The eight-episode series, which follows the modern day rise and fall of fictional opioid giant Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, is based on not only Poe’s epic “The Fall of the House of Usher” but many of his other seminal classics as well.
Fittingly, pretty much every character on the show is named after an Edgar Allan Poe creation. These range from the blindingly obvious (Bruce Greenwood’s Roderick Usher and Mary McDonnell’s Madeline Usher) to the less obvious (Katie Parker’s Annabel Lee) to the downright obscure (T’Nia Miller’s Victorine Lafourcade). One of The Fall of the House of Usher‘s most important characters, however, doesn’t appear to have...

Mike Flanagan’s final series for Netflix is “The Fall of the House of Usher,” and it’s available to stream now. The limited eight-episode series is based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, and that is reflected in every facet of the series, right down to its production design.
In the series, “Ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege, and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.”
The Usher family is played by Bruce Greenwood (Roderick Usher), Mary McDonnell (Madeline Usher), Henry Thomas (Frederick Usher), T’Nia Miller (Victorine Lafourcade), Samantha Sloyan (Tamerlane Usher), Rahul Kohli (Napoleon “Leo” Usher), Kate Siegel (Camille L’Espanaye), Sauriyan Sapkota (Prospero “Perry” Usher), Kyliegh Curran (Lenore Usher), and Zach Gilford and Willa Fitzgerald as young Roderick and Madeline respectively.

The Fall of the House of Usher is filmmaker Mike Flanagan’s gloriously morbid remix of author Edgar Allen Poe’s best-known stories and poems, and it’s winning raves from critics (with a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes). Even those totally unfamiliar with Poe probably found some glimmer of recognition amid the show’s nods to his best-known tales — such as “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Raven” and “The Cask of Amontillado” — given how Poe’s stories have threaded through pop culture over the last 175 years or so.
But even Poe superfans probably couldn’t spot all the references — because there are dozens scattered throughout the show’s eight Gothic episodes.
So here they are (The Hollywood Reporter compiled this based on notes supplied by the show’s production team — I’m not going to pretend to be this smart; also, there’s always a chance that a...

This post contains spoilers for "The Fall of the House of Usher."
Mike Flanagan's latest horror mini-series, "The Fall of the House of Usher," transposes the stories of Edgar Allan Poe to the 21st century. In this retelling, "The House of Usher" is a nouveau riche dynasty and the owners of a pharmaceutical corporation, Fortunato. Twin siblings Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline (Mary McDonnell) sit at the head of that table, with other seats filled by Roderick's spoiled adult children -- six of them, from five different mothers, who all stand to inherit a piece of his fortune. Comparisons to the recently concluded "Succession" have already begun.
Like the Roy family in "Succession," the Ushers have made their fortune by poisoning society. The Roys, as the owners of media conglomerate Waystar Royco, reshaped the mind of the American consumer with far-right political propaganda. Their "news" network, Atn, is Fox in all but name.

For the absurdly wealthy, it can seem like nothing in their lofty lives of opulence and egomania is the same as anything in our own. Their luxuries (indefinite trips around the world) are not our luxuries. Their worries our not our worries. Their rules are not our rules — even, it turns out, the golden one. Within Mike Flanagan’s interpretation of the Usher family, at least, the well-known advice of “do unto others” is little more than a punch line. Roderick (Bruce Greenwood), the patriarch of the pharmaceutical scions, explains how a joke he once told his children morphed into an accidental family motto. “It was in a comic book,” he says during an early episode of “The Fall of the House of Usher.” “‘The Wizard of Id’ — No. 4, I think, late ’60s — and the cover had a stout little king standing in a green tower.” The king bellows out to his pupils,...

This article contains spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher.
To say there’s a lot going on in The Fall of the House of Usher is to put it lightly. This Netflix title is…
– The latest (and likely final) spooky Netflix series from horror maestro Mike Flanagan before he moves on to his new overall deal at Amazon.
– A deeply angry allegory about the human wreckage wrought from the opioid crisis.
– An adaption of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
– An Easter egg and reference bonanza of the rest of the Gothic literature titan’s classic works.
While all of those elements are of equal importance, it’s the Poe aspects that really shine through. Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher may just be the most effusive love letter to America’s spooky uncle that has ever been penned.

For most people, choices made incur consequences. One of the most intriguing components of life is the realization that we all have a tab, and at one point or another, a bill will come due. The 1% who hold the majority of the wealth and influence globally typically don’t abide by these same rules. The upper echelons of society move through life seemingly without repercussions by leaching off the powerless. Mike Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” which earns its title from an 1839 Edgar Allen Poe story, showcases the demise of a family who, after being afforded every opportunity, eventually pays the price for their rampant monstrosity.

On a dark night, pharma tycoon Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) invites an old acquaintance to meet him in his childhood home. Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly), an attorney with the U.S. government, is surprised by the overture: He’s arguing a landmark lawsuit against Roderick’s company for its driving role in the opioid epidemic, and he’s never gotten the elusive magnate on the record. So, he approaches the boarded-up house at the end of a cul-de-sac, its rotting frame illuminated only by the pale glow of distant lightning. Inside, Roderick shocks Auguste by confessing his guilt—not only accepting the accusations against his company, but claiming responsibility for the recent, mystifying deaths of his six children.

It’s the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired limited series The Fall of the House of Usher, which will be available to watch as of this Thursday, October 12th. Here’s the set-up for Poe’s story The Fall of the House of Usher: Roderick Usher and his sister Madeline are the only two surviving members of the aristocratic Usher family. For many years, they have lived together in the ancient mansion which is their ancestral family home.

If you’re a person with simmering rage directed at the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma for their alleged contributions to the opioid epidemic, chronicles like Hulu’s Dopesick and Netflix’s Painkiller face a major stumbling block when it comes to delivering resolution: When one side of the ledger has hundreds of thousands of deaths and the other has a few settlements and some bankruptcy filings, reality can be a real bummer. No such restrictions confine Mike Flanagan in his latest spooky-season Netflix limited series.
Half creative writing project tied to a freshman seminar on Edgar Allan Poe, half horror-filled karmic catharsis, Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher is a bluntly entertaining exercise. Creator Mike Flanagan’s latest and final series collaboration with Netflix, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” takes on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Much like “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” Flanagan’s latest uses a classic short story as the central narrative framework to remix a variety of Poe’s macabre poems and short stories but with Flanagan’s signature pathos. Unlike previous Netflix series, “The Fall of the House of Usher” eschews the familiar melancholy and dials up the gallows humor for a twisted tale that’s unafraid to get grisly.
In the process, however, it’s less effective at organically adapting Poe.
Like the source story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” begins with Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly) called to a crumbling estate for a final meeting with the deteriorating Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). With time drawing to a close and haunted by horrific...

What if Edgar Allan Poe had penned "Succession"? The result might be "The Fall of the House of Usher," the latest streaming terror from Mike Flanagan ("Midnight Mass"). Flanagan, once again working with his usual stable of players, takes a "shut up and play the hits" approach to Poe here, dipping into the legendary author's work to reference nearly everything you can think of -- "The Raven," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Masque of the Red Death," "Murders in the Rue Morgue," and on and on. Even Poe's famous detective character C. Auguste Dupin has a part to play, only now he's been upgraded from a sleuth to a crusading district attorney, played with calm gravitas by Carl Lumbly.
At the center of it all is an obscenely wealthy, and morally corrupt family of siblings, all of whom are under the thumb of their ruthless patriarch, Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). Flanagan...

"What if 'Succession' but Edgar Allan Poe?" is a pretty damn fine pitch for a horror series if you ask me, especially when it's coming from Mike Flanagan. The modern horror maestro has been a practical machine for Netflix these last several years, churning out hit after hit like "Gerald's Game," "The Haunting of Hill House," and "The Haunting of Bly Manor." He's since secured a deal to develop projects for Amazon Studios, but before he leaves, he's gifted Netflix with one final offering. Titled "The Fall of the House of Usher," the show sees Flanagan turning his eye to the works of the father of Gothic horror fiction, Edgar Allan Poe, as filtered through the modern-day world of cutthroat corporate culture and familial dynasties. So, yeah, it's "Succession" with a whole lot more literal bloodshed.

Mike Flanagan's grip on the horror genre will continue on Netflix this fall with The Fall of the House of Usher.
Netflix on Tuesday released the trailer for The Haunting of Hill House creator's next project.
The drama is based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe and follows the Usher family as "past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth."
It's a compelling hook and the official trailer promises we're in for a terrifying journey across eight episodes.
Will there be a way to stop this mysterious individual from the past, or will the Ushers realize that death is inevitable?
The footage raises many questions about the family's dealings, and truthfully, they may be one of the most despicable families on the small screen.

The first trailer for Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” has arrived, and it’s positively brimming with Poe. The limited series is set to premiere all eight episodes on Netflix on Oct. 12.
This first look jumps between several unsettling scenes, from lurking ravens to murderous ladies and seemingly other-worldly creatures. As Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) curtly reveals that the family will “exhaust our arsenal until the threat’s neutralized,” Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill) pours over an active crime scene. Naturally, for Flanagan’s work, it all comes to a head with the appearance of Carla Gugino’s mysterious and skull mask-wearing Verna.

When asked who she is, Verna says, “Consequence. And tonight is consequential.”
