Exclusive: Boxing mother-and-son drama Undercard, starring comedian Wanda Sykes in her first big dramatic film role, has begun principal photography in Puerto Rico for Catalyst Studios.
Emmy Award-winning Sykes plays Cheryl “No Mercy” Stewart, a two-time former boxing champion and recovering alcoholic.
The movie follows her attempts to reconnect with 20-year-old son Keith, a talented but troubled young man, played by rising star Bentley Green (Heist 88), who has followed his mother’s footsteps into the boxing ring.
When Keith finds himself alone in his corner, because of his gambling-addicted trainer, he is forced to turn to his mother. Determined to right past wrongs, she embarks on a mission to train her son for glory in a World Championship title fight.
They are joined in the cast by William Stanford Davis (Abbott Elementary), Xavier Mills, Estella Kahiha, Berto Colon and Puerto Rican star Roselyn Sanchez.
Undercard marks the sixth production in two years for Catalyst Studios.
It is directed by Tamika Miller and co-written by Miller and Anita M. Cal.
The movie is billed as following in the tradition of Raging Bull, Million Dollar Baby and Creed, but with the story told through the eyes of the trainer.
“It is about the struggle and survival of the human spirit. Getting up when life does its best to knock you down. This powerful, moving story is a metaphor for our own challenges. And it shows Wanda like we have never seen her before,” said Catalyst Studios Chairperson Holly Anderson Levow.
“I’m thrilled to have this amazing cast bring Undercard to life, with Wanda leading the way in what I know will be a breathtaking performance,” said Miller.
Veteran producer Anne Clements along with local producers Frances Lausell and Andres Ramirez are overseeing production in Puerto Rico. Kim Coleman is Co-Producer. Sykes also serves as an executive producer.

Juan Pablo González‘s Sundance winning Dos Estaciones, Manuela Martelli‘s Quinzaine section winning 1976, Andrés Ramírez Pulido‘s Critics’ Week winner La Jauría, Carolina Markowicz‘s Platform (TIFF) competing Charcoal and Ana Cristina Barragán‘s Octupus Skin are all part of the dozen films selected for the Horizontes Latinos line-up at the 2022 San Sebastian International Film Festival. Clearly a section filled with 2022 film festival riches, the section will open with Patricio Guzmán’s My Imaginary Country – a Cannes entry that Icarus Films will premiere next month.
It’s worth noting that Barragán’s Octopus Skin (aka La Piel Pulpo) (also a Guadalajara Film Festival post prod fund winner) is one of four films featured in this year’s Horizontes line-up that screened in last year’s Wip Latam.…...

Exclusive: The trinidad+tobago film festival and its Caribbean Film Mart will launch five works-in-progress at the Buenos Aires market next month.
Ventana Caribe stems from a mutual desire to foster strong ties between the Caribbean and Latin American industries.
Javier Fernandez, the artistic coordinator and head of the Blood Window genre market that takes place during Ventana Sur, attended the trinidad+tobago film festival in late September.
“We at Ventana Sur were honoured to form a joint venture with Caribbean Film Mart at its inaugural edition to shed light on the Caribbean region,” Fernandez said.
“With the specific aim of fostering connections between Latin America and the Caribbean, Ventana Sur will launch, at its seventh edition, Ventana Caribe, for projects in post-production.
“There will be co-production meetings, a video library and a panel presentation with a ttff representative. We hope this collaboration lasts long and offers support to both our cinema industries.”

The trailer for the first horror film produced in Laos, Chanthaly has arrived online. This is also the first Laotian film produced by a female director (Mattie Do). It doesn’t look bad at all. Chanthaly was supposed to be the opening film of the third Luang Prabang Film Festival. The film is about a young woman (Amphaiphun Phimmapunya) with a congenital heart defect who’s been raised by her overprotective widowed father. As her character develops, the movie gradually shifts gears to horror, with ghosts in white dresses inhabiting a parallel realm of the house where it’s daylight all the time. Profanity is kept to a... Related posts: New Trailer for Dead Shadows Sci-Fi Horror First Trailer & Poster For The Jadallah Brothers’ Horror Movie Entity! 1 year ago I attended the best festival I have ever been to as a filmmaker. All the movies were free. The location was beautiful. The people were amazing. And apparently I inspired them to create an Independent Spirit Award just to give to me.
Well the Orlando Film Festival is back and it kicks off Wednesday November 3rd at the Plaza Cinema Café in Downtown Orlando. While I won.t be screening anything at the festival, I will still be on hand checking out some films and promoting my own. I will also be handing out the Independent Spirit Award, which has been named after me this year.
The festival runs from Wednesday November 3rd through Sunday November 7th. All the film screenings are free but you must get a ticket for each at the booth in front of the theater. The Plaza Cinema Café is located at 155 South Orange...
