George Lucas may never finish tinkering with his Star Wars series. At the Consumer Electronics Show today, the anticipated announcement was officially made that the six movies will be collected in a nine-disc box set. The original trilogy will be making their Blu-ray debut -- but these are the special editions. Apparently, the original elements from the first releases are fragile and need to be recreated or cleaned to properly reproduce in high definition (yes, meaning another opportunity to sell us product).
All the usual websites are now taking pre-orders but the disc won't be out for months. Here's the formal release:

It's official. The Force is going to be unleashed onto Blu-ray in September when Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment releases all six Star Wars films in Hi-Def.
It is expected that the films in the original trilogy (you know, the good ones) will be the editions with updated special effects and a redeemed Han Solo rather than original theatrical versions. Nonetheless, seeing these sci-fi classics (yes, I'm still talking about the originals) in hi-def should be a treat to behold if Fox's recent release of the Alien films was anything to go by (hmm, I wonder if the special features will be accessible using I-am-your-fa-th-er mode).
We'd got no official word on extras at press time but they must be impressive because the box set of the entire saga includes nine (that's Nine) discs. What we do know for sure is what's in the official statement announcing the Blu-ray release.

The Star Wars series of movies -- both trilogies -- are finally coming to Blu-ray. Star Wars: The Complete Saga will be on sale later this year, sometime in September 2011.
Lucasfilm is releasing the remastered movies through its business relationship with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. The announcement was made today at the Consumer Electronics Show where Tcfhe president Mike Dunn addressed the assembled crowd, flanked by Imperial Stormtroopers and the Dark Lord of the Sith himself, Darth Vader.
"The Star Wars Saga is the most anticipated Blu-ray collection since the launch of the high-def format," Dunn said. "The epic franchise pioneered sound and visual presentation in theaters and is perfectly suited to do it again in the home, with a viewing experience only possible with Blu-ray."
"The Star Wars franchise has been one of the most anticipated Blu-ray releases by Amazon's customers," said Bill Carr, vice president of music and video at Amazon.

If you're a Star Wars nut like me, then you've been eagerly awaiting the announcement from this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). It was announced a couple weeks ago that Darth Vader himself would be making an appearance at CES, and fanboys around the world became abuzz at the possibilities. However, a recent press invite sent out by Lucasfilm (pictured below) left little doubt as to what the announcement would entail: the Saga on blu-ray.
Just minutes ago at CES Darth Vader, flanked by a legion of Stormtroopers to meet Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment President Mike Dunn on the CES show floor. From there the announcement we've all been waiting for came. Star Wars is coming to blu-ray...in September!
Now we already knew about the Saga on blu-ray when an official announcement was made during Celebration V (the massive Star Wars convention), but little, to no, details were given on the box set.

New York -- A slew of Hollywood studios and cable companies are teaming up for a $30 million advertising campaign over the coming months to further promote awareness of movies available on cable VOD.
