Univision plans to launch a two-tier streaming service next year in the U.S. and Latin America, calling the premium offering a milestone for the Hispanic market.
The new service will have more Spanish-language originals than any other streaming service, the company pledged. It is positioned to take access of the new ownership structure at Univision. In April, the company said it would acquire the production assets of Televisa, a longtime stakeholder, in a $4.8 billion merger. Mexico-based Televisa has long been a prolific producer of Spanish-language fare.
The new streaming service will encompass PrendeTV, the free, ad-supported service that Univision launched earlier this year, as well as Vix and Univision Now. Univision has launched PrendeTV, describing it as the “first and only streaming channels-based and VOD service created specifically for U.S. Hispanic audiences.”
The free, ad-supported platform complements two existing Univision subscription streaming offerings. Prende comes to market with 40 streaming channels and 10,000 hours of on-demand video programming. Combined with Vix, which Univision acquired in February, the total is 30,000 hours. The company made its streaming plans known last January.
Univision has been plotting a new strategic course since being taken over by a consortium of investors led by former Viacom CFO Wade Davis, who now runs the company as CEO.
While the streaming marketplace is crowded with hundreds of subscription outlets and thousands following the AVOD model, certain offerings on PrendeTV are exclusive. A curated channel and VOD lineup features titles from Univision and Televisa content libraries not found on other streaming services.

ViacomCBS is launching an international streaming service in early 2021, the company announced during its second-quarter earnings call Thursday. All new Showtime series, including the much-anticipated “Halo” adaptation and the upcoming “American Rust,” will debut first on the currently unnamed SVOD (subscriber video on demand) platform, which will first go live in Australia, Latin America, and Nordic countries.
The new service, which will have content for all ages, will require a paid subscription. The international streaming service launch is separate from the upcoming CBS All Access rebrand in the United States, though both are expected to begin in 2021.
CBS All Access originals, including “Guilty Party” and “The Harper House,” will also premiere exclusively on the new streaming service, ViacomCBS said. ViacomCBS has raised the curtains on its long-anticipated global streamer, with plans set for an early 2021 launch.
Having teased the prospect of a “broad pay streaming product” back in May, ViacomCBS Networks International has unveiled plans for a premium SVOD service for all audiences, underpinned by major output deals with Showtime and CBS All Access and a “super-sized” selection of content from ViacomCBS brands including CBS, MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and some first-run Paramount films.
The streamer, which will receive bespoke branding in the coming months, will be rolled out early next year in Australia, Latin America and the Nordics, with more international markets to follow. In some countries, the platform won’t be starting from scratch: CBS All Access is already present in Australia and will simply relaunch as the new streamer. The same applies for the Paramount Plus service in the Nordics, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

The Cwa Silver Dagger-winning 21-novel book series has been acclaimed for its byzantine plots that shed light on areas of Istanbul not written about in tourist brochures.
“[Barbara] Nadel is a terrific writer, and her page-turning novels combine beautifully honed storytelling that is at once captivating, colorful and imbued with a distinctly authentic sense of place,” said Marc Helwig, Head of Worldwide Television at Miramax.

Pluto TV, the free, ad-supported streaming service owned by ViacomCBS, will launch in Latin America at the end of March. Pluto TV Brazil is expected to launch by the end of 2020.
ViacomCBS Networks International announced the expansion Monday. Pluto was acquired by Viacom in January 2019 for $340 million.
The service will offer programming in Spanish and Portuguese. Pluto will be available on cable operator platforms, its own website and via an iOS and Android app.
About 80% of Pluto channels are curated by editorial teams, giving the platform unique flexibility. While it faces several competitors in ad-supported streaming, its live, linear focus differs from rivals’ largely on-demand orientation.
“The launch of Pluto TV in Latin America enables our partners to offer their viewers a new value-added service, complementing their premium and linear offerings,” said Pierluigi Gazzolo, President of Studios and Ott for ViacomCBS Networks International. “I am confident that Pluto TV will...

“There won’t be money in the world for platforms to 100% finance all the content they need, targeting each and every demographic,” says Manuel Martí at Argentina’s Pol-ka.
So, he argues, two strong business models will thrive.
One is “work-for-hire for platforms in a global environment, where they buy all rights and fund 100% of production costs”; the other, “co-production, where production companies work as studios, sourcing co-funding in other countries from other channels, networks and local operators, where no one owns 100% of the IP and platforms buy a stake in shows.”

Along with Germany and Spain, Latin America is fast emerging as one of the biggest growth regions for high-end fiction in international, Ott, premium pay TV and co-productions.
Ott is experiencing a second-phase expansion. Netflix released its first Latin American original, “Club of Crows,” in August 2015. Two years later, it had 50 new or returning productions in various stages of development. That number has risen yet again. On Sept. 20, for instance, Netflix announced its 11th original to date in Brazil, supernatural thriller “Spectros.”
There are now other new kids on the digital block. In May, Amazon Prime Video’s first original series “Diablo Guardian,” produced with Televisa production unit Tao, bowed to critical acclaim.

Cannes — Few executives are better positioned to pinpoint the vast changes sweeping over Latin American TV than Pierluigi Gazzolo, president of Viacom Intl. Media Networks – Americas.
Vimn – America’s purchase of Telefe, Argentina’s highest-rating broadcast network, and then investment in Porta dos Fundos, Brazil’s second-biggest YouTube channel, have been milestones in the region’s recent entertainment business history. But in some ways, rather than a change of direction, the moves merely hastened Vimn down a road it had long been treading. In an extended interview, Gazzolo survey many of the drivers for changes, challenges and strategies Vimn is pursuing in the region. Many are felt by other companies. Few can put them into practice, however, with such scale and force.

MEXICO CITY -- MTV Networks Latin America on Tuesday announced a large-scale regionalization strategy designed to expand local programming and production operations in the region's key markets.
Viacom-owned MTV Networks Latin America said it is in the process of moving MTV and VH1's programming and production operations from headquarters in Miami to existing regional offices in Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo (for VH1 only). The new structure will allow the company to create more homegrown content in Latin America's top territories: Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.
"Right now, 30% to 50% of our programming in the region is local," said Pierluigi Gazzolo, president of MTV Networks Latin America. "Re-inventing our creative structure supports our decision to have more programming and production driven locally."
In addition to producing more reality shows and other formats, MTV Networks Latin America is eyeing made-for-television movies and comedic talk shows.
"We think a lot of the formats can be exported out of the region," Gazzolo said.
