Former Parker Spitzer cohost Kathleen Parker spoke to Morning Joe about the news that her old sparring partner Eliot Spitzer would be running for New York comptroller, his first foray into politics since a prostitution scandal forced his resignation from the office of governor. Parker intimated that his biggest challenge would not be overcoming his salacious past, but the enemies he made with his aggressive investigations of the financial sector.

So, what's on your mind these days? Maybe you're looking ahead to the general election or pondering the nature of judicial activism. Whatever the case, recent events make me pause, as I do often, to think about how much time we spend reading and listening to speculation and predictions from pundits-- that curious cadre of people we've installed in our society, on our talk shows and on our RSS feeds and newspapers who tell us what to think. Whatever one thinks of them, there's little question that these bearers of blood pressure do a very effective job of inflating the deeply contingent nature of reality and making us worry. In my industry, one of our trade magazines reported that the deployment of the words "double-dip recession" which crested at a frenzied 230 articles per week last year has now subsided to under 40 in February of 2012. Then there's the continuing Gop race...

CNN has revealed that it has canceled former New York governor Eliot Spitzer's talkshow. Spitzer is generally known for his infamous involvement in a high-priced prostitution ring, which forced him to resign his post as New York governor in 2008. Following his resignation, the 52-year-old was invited to join CNN as a host for the series Parker Spitzer with journalist Kathleen Parker. Parker left the series in February of this year due to its poor ratings. The show was ultimately renamed In the Arena, featuring Spitzer as the main contributor. Today, CNN announced that it would be canceling Spitzer's series to replace it with Anderson Cooper's news program AC360. However, the network is reportedly looking (more)...

After just nine months on air, CNN is ousting primetime pundit (and disgraced former New York governor) Eliot Spitzer and his show In the Arena. The struggling show was previously revamped with the exit of co-host Kathleen Parker this past February.
As of Aug. 8, the network is going to move up several shows, including Anderson Cooper 360, The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, and John King, USA. In September, former CNBC reporter Erin Burnett will fill the 7 p.m. slot that King formerly filled.
Cooper, whose show will rebroadcast in his usual 10 p.m., is not alone in receiving good news.

Sad news today for a very small group of people: on August 8, CNN will withdraw Eliot Spitzer’s misbegotten prime-time roundtable, In the Arena (neée Parker Spitzer), from the airwaves. It will be replaced in time slot, though not in spirit, by Anderson Cooper 360. According to Politico, though fewer than 100,000 young people (aged 25-54) dared venture into the Arena/mindlessly left the show on mute in the background while eating dinner each night, CNN is still hoping to find some use for Spitzer. “We are in discussions with Eliot Spitzer about an alternative role,” a internal company memo revealed. Back in February, in a different internal memo, CNN announced that deposed co-host Kathleen Parker had left Spitzer’s side to “focus on her writing.” However, Spitzer famously hates column writing, so this would not be a suitable “alternative role.” In the Arena’s Wikipedia page has already been edited to the past tense.

It's not as bad as having to resign in disgrace as New York's governor after a sex scandal. But Eliot Spitzer still has to look for a new gig now that CNN says his low-rated weeknight talk show In The Arena didn't make the network's new line-up that will debut Aug. 8. He'll be replaced at 8:00 Pm Et by Anderson Cooper's AC360, which will re-air at 10:00. That show will be preceded at 7:00 by an unnamed general news show hosted by former CNBC anchor Erin Burnett. And Piers Morgan Tonight will remain at 9:00. Ken Jautz, Evp of CNN/U.S. says that the network is "in discussions with Eliot Spitzer about an alternative role. We thank him and the entire In the Arena team for creating a program that moved many political and economic issues into the national spotlight.” Spitzer adds in a statement that his show...

Cable news ratings, March 2, 2011: •The decision to transform CNN's Parker Spitzer into a new show, In the Arena, more focused around host Eliot Spitzer came after many observed a strange trend: Parker Spitzer had far better ratings when co-host Kathleen Parker wasn't on. In its debut week, that trend hasn't quite held for In the Arena. The new show, which began Monday, has only had three nights on the air and making any conclusions this early would be unfair, but the show has lost viewers each night, from 124,000 viewers 25-54 on Monday to 114,000 Wednesday, for a fourth-place finish behind Hln's Nancy Grace.

For CNN, February was a good month.
Boosted by major world events and several new shows, the cable news network drew 55% more prime-time viewers in its target demographic this month as compared to the same month a year ago. In February, CNN drew, on average, 243,000 viewers between 25 years old to 54 years old—the demographic that cable news advertisers covet. Last February, just 157,000 people in that demographic tuned in.

Eliot Spitzer is already moving on, with his new show up and running. But even off the air, Parker Spitzer ended much as it began-with Spitzer insisting on the last word.
Time moves quickly in the 24-hour culture of cable news. Just 72 hours after Kathleen Parker was kicked to the curb as co-host of CNN's Parker Spitzer, her partner Eliot Spitzer was back on the air Monday evening as host of the brand-new In the Arena. Behind the scenes on Friday, the pair's final act played out with characteristic discord.

That afternoon, in between taping sessions of their final show, Parker, Spitzer, and staff were in her office on the fourth floor of the Time Warner tower in midtown Manhattan. Parker said her good-byes, and as most of the group went back upstairs to the set, Spitzer lingered. The co-hosts were alone.

Politico reported that disgraced former Governor Eliot Spitzer edged out his co chair, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Kathleen Parker, on the low-rated CNN news analysis show, Parker Spitzer. Did CNN eject the right half of the duo? That's for the viewers to weigh in, as CNN is betting on Eliot, who was the infamous "Client 9" in a prostitution scandal that brought down his political career. CNN is removing Kathleen just four months of being on the air. Friday saw Parker beat a hasty farewell at the end of the broadcast, with Spitzer mute about the subject. Starting Monday, CNN is renaming their "Parker Spitzer" show "In The Arena" and turning it into an ensemble program with co-host Eliot...

For our CNN viewers, you may be interested in learning that Kathleen Parker, one half of the news duo “Parker Spitzer” has left the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Parker leaves after months of dwindling ratings and rumors of contention between Parker and her host, former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Two months earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that CNN was considering replacing Parker. However, it should be noted that the show was never a big success to begin with, what with it being a weird mix of “hard” news and infotainment-verging on-rom/com stylings. This blogger is an avid CNN watcher, and after watching some of the show, I [...]...

Whatever you think of Eliot Spitzer - and frankly I’d take smart, Clinton-Spitzer sex-challenged politicians over idiot politicians any day - he’s good on television. He’s an incisive, challenging interviewer; he’s politically opinionated but not bullying, and always listens to the other side. So it makes sense that Kathleen Parker is leaving the Parker Spitzer show, a move CNN announced on Friday afternoon, the time you dump news you hope to bury. A new version of the show, renamed In the Arena, begins Monday (8 Et). According to CNN, “Spitzer will remain on that show, which will adopt an ensemble…...

Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Kathleen Parker is leaving CNN's embattled primetime program Parker Spitzer, which she had been co-hosting with former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Starting on Monday, the program will be renamed In The Arena, and will feature Spitzer, as well as several others within and outside CNN, according to a memo by CNN U.S. chief Ken Jautz. Parker is expected to continue to make occasional appearances on the cable news network. Ratings for Parker Spitzer have been minuscule since its October launch but went up while Parker was on a sick leave recently and Spitzer was the sole anchor. The show was also plagued by constant rumors about friction between the two hosts. "It has been a joy working with (Parker) as a teammate, and I continue to be a huge fan of the wisdom that jumps from her written work and the wit, charm and insight...

CNN is making major changes to its struggling pundit show Parker Spitzer.
For starters, columnist and co-host Kathleen Parker is exiting the program.
Former New York governor Eliot Spitzer will remain with the show, which will be reconfigured into an ensemble series with other guests titled In the Arena. E.D. Hill and Will Cain will join the program, which will launch on Monday.
“We have been pleased with how the 8 p.m. hour has become a centerpiece of substantive, policy-oriented conversation, and we are looking forward to building on that with this new format,” says CNN Executive VP Ken Jautz.

It won't earn Eliot Spitzer and Kathleen Parker a promo or even a news release--especially not with the whirlwind of publicity surrounding tonight's launch of Piers Morgan Tonight. But quietly, and despite the uncertainty and rumors that have settled around the show like bad roommates, CNN's Parker Spitzer hit a high point last week: the show's highest weekly ratings since its debut.

Amidst reports that CNN is eager to shake-up the relatively new, but ratings-starved, Parker Spitzer, by dumping Kathleen Parker and giving Eliot Spitzer a new co-host, I politely suggest the exact opposite strategy would better ensure the show's longevity. With the ratings for Parker Spitzer consistently placing it in last place among cable news networks at its time slot, and often last among CNN's own primetime lineup, the evidence is clear that the show's current format is not clicking with audiences. Change is a good idea. Keeping Spitzer is not.

Middling cable network CNN may dispose of one half of the Parker Spitzer team. Guess which half? “CNN is considering replacing Kathleen Parker,” according to today’s Wall Street Journal. Rumors of a Parker departure have been swirling since as early as December 1, when the New York Post reported that the conservative columnist simply did not care for Eliot Spitzer. At the time, we suggested some possible Parker replacements, including Christine O’Donnell, George W. Bush, and Julian Assange. As those options are under police investigation, presumably unwilling, and under police investigation, respectively, other speculators are now recommending a new roster of potential backups. For example, Gawker proposed that “a piece of string” fill in for Parker. We like it but think big: what about several pieces of string fashioned together to create a doll? Flashy replacements aside, a CNN spokesperson declined to confirm or deny the rumors, telling the...

According to a report posted tonight on the website of The Wall Street Journal, CNN is considering replacing Kathleen Parker, co-host of the ratings-challenged Parker Spitzer. The WSJ story quotes unnamed sources who say a new co-host could be named to join Eliot Spitzer as part of a major overhaul of the show, which has floundered in the ratings since its debut three months ago. CNN's primetime programs performed poorly in 2010, which marked the network's worst ratings performance in fourteen years.

In a shocking new report, “Co-host Spittin’ Mad Over Spitzer,” The New York Post claims that Kathleen Parker dislikes her CNN co-host, arrogant former Slate columnist Eliot Spitzer. According to the Post, “Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker actually stormed off the set of the ‘Parker Spitzer’ show during a pre-taping a few weeks ago—furious that her co-host is continually allowed to take charge of their nightly CNN chat-fest, the insiders said.” Another source stuck up for the former New York governor, noting that Parker’s not as ready-for-prime-time as Spitzer, whom, the source gushed, “turned out better than [CNN] thought.” If Parker walks, who should replace her as Spitzer’s second fiddle?
