Many fans are familiar with Batman: The Animated Series (1992), but there is actually a show called The Batman Animated Series (2004) which remained less popular despite its six Daytime Emmy Awards. The story behind its creation is quite as interesting as the series’ unique take on Batman.

Animator Jeff Matsuda was the chief character designer for Jackie Chan Adventures. The show was a raging success, but when it was time to bid farewell to the series, Matsuda had to find a way to score a new gig.

The Masters of the Universe franchise is experiencing a major resurgence, with three new series on Netflix after a drought of animated content after the 2002 Motu series ended in 2004. The new era has been an altogether unexpected one for the franchise. Leading off with a new version of She-Ra, a character not seen in animation since the ‘80s, the show boldly aimed its stories at a new and more diverse group of viewers. Even with its eschewing of direct connections to He-Man the show delighted in its references and use of the wider Motu mythology.
Then we got Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Where many updates of old franchises simply take concepts and do a modern take on them, Revelation instead was a love letter to fans of the franchise. It wasn’t a reboot of He-Man, it was a continuation of the original show. It was filled to the brim with references and callbacks,...

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’s most popular character should be He-Man, right? His name is in the title! Anyone who’s watched almost any incarnation of the franchise though knows who the real star of the show is. Skeletor, the big bad of the series. Even if you’ve never watched an episode you’ve now doubt seen a gif rendition of Skeletor’s iconic laugh or heard his “Nyeh!” Compilations of his insults have racked up millions of views on YouTube and his face graces endless memes. The character is etched in pop culture history.
Jeff Matsuda, Co-Executive Producer of the new He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series on Netflix, felt the pressure of bringing a new version of the iconic character to life specifically because of all the memes. With this in mind he knew the team behind the series had to not...

Netflix and Mattel Television are producing He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, an original CG animated adventure series that will reimagine the popular Reagan Era toy-based franchise with a fresh take on its fantasy heroes.
The CG animation undertaking will be a brand companion for Netflix’s previously announced Mattel partnership on the 2D anime series Masters of the Universe: Revelation from filmmaker Kevin Smith.
The logline: “On the planet of Eternia, a young lost prince discovers the powers of Grayskull and transforms into He-Man, Master of the Universe! The classic battle between He-Man and evil Skeletor rages to new heights as both hero and villain forge new and mighty teams. A new generation of heroes fighting for the fate of us all. In the end, who will become Master of the Universe?”
The series is being produced by Mattel Television with Adam Bonnett (Descendants), Christopher Keenan, and Rob David serving as executive producers. The series was developed for television by Rob David.
Emmy-winning producer and designer Jeff Matsuda and Susan Corbin (Voltron) will also produce. Bryan Q Miller will serve as story editor on the series. Animation services are being provided by House of Cool and Cgcg (Trollhunters).
Fred Soulie, Mattel’s Senior Vice President of Content Distribution and Business Development, said the series will strive for a contemporary appeal that also satisfies longtime fans of the sword-and-sorcery exploits of characters such as Extendar, Man-At-Arms, Gwilor, Battle Cat and Roboto.
“Masters of the Universe is one of the most iconic global franchises of all time, with a 30-year history and a passionate fan base,” Soulie said. “The entire team at Mattel is excited to introduce the world of He-Man to a new generation and, together with the talented team at Netflix, to reimagine the classic characters in a way that appeals to kids and families today, while also resonating with the fans who grew up with them.”
Mattel’s reboot of the classic Masters of the Universe franchise also includes a comic book series by DC Comics, an upcoming feature film, and a reimagining of the 1980s toyline that hits retail shelves in Fall 2020.

Legions of Gotham had the exclusive world premiere look at the style guide sheets that were used in the production for the cartoon The Batman. These were given to the artists and animators on the series as a reference tool. We premiered these back in 2008.
The guide centers largely around Jeff Matsuda's desire to give Batman's cape a very specific life in the cartoon. The Batman style guides detail exactly how Batman's cape should be draw and draped in various scenarios.
"I've said it before and I'll say it again - your site is amazing! I check out your forums every chance I get to read what fans think of our shows. You're doing a hell of a job for the Batman fans!"- Brandon Vietti, Director: The Batman, Under the Red Hood and Writer on Young Justice...

This is a collection of unused character designs for the 2004 cartoon The Batman. These were available exclusively on Legions of Gotham from 2005 onward. This behind the scenes look at the cartoon is part of our History of Batman in Animation series.
The art team on The Batman was comprised of Jose Lopez, Thomas Perkins and helmed by Jeff Matsuda. This was the first Batman cartoon to not be a part of the iconic "Timmverse" since Batman: The Animated Series debuted back in 1992.
The fresh look, dubbed "Batsuda", and whole new tone brought Batman into a new era for a new generation. The show would run for five seasons and spawn a direct to DVD movie, The Batman vs. Dracula. There were plans for a The Batman: Hush movie, based on the popular Loeb/Lee comic book series, but those were scrapped. Legions of Gotham has the exclusive artwork from that scrapped film,...

This review is based off a volume that collects Spider-Man/Deadpool #6-7, 11-12 and 1.Mu.
As enjoyable as books chronicling the adventures of the Justice League or Avengers may be, they often don’t get to explore the interpersonal relationships shared between specific superheroes as often as we’d like. But, when you pare it down to two, you’re given a much different kind of team-up comic. Personally, I enjoy seeing the best buddy dynamic offered whenever Batman and Superman join forces or, likewise, whenever the Flash and Green Lantern go back to back. On the other hand, I also get a kick out of the veritable powder keg that is Daredevil and Punisher.
The focus of today’s review, though, Spider-Man/Deadpool, may be in a class of its own. You’ve got a do-gooder in Peter Parker and a mercenary in Wade Wilson, so, logically, they shouldn’t get along.

Ben Affleck recently confirmed that the title that is currently being used for the solo Batman film that he is co-developing is The Batman and that the script is coming along nicely. When Batman premiered in the Golden Age of comic books he was often referred to as 'The Batman' instead of simply Batman. The movie will share its title with the 2004 Jeff Matsuda helmed cartoon of the same name.

The Top 5 Coolest Animated Incarnations of Mr. Freeze!by Matt MacNabb
Mr. Freeze is one of the most enigmatic and emotional villains in the Batman's rogues gallery. Orginally dubbed 'Mr. Zero' when he was first introduced to comic book fans back in 1959. His appearances on the 1966 Batman television show altered his name forever to Mr. Freeze! The real birth of this once one-dimensional character, however, came in the Batman cartoons. Legions of Gotham will now countdown the top five animated appearances of the tragic Dr. Victor Fries!
5. Young Justice
The Young Justice cartoon ended too quickly after just two seasons, but Batman fans were treated to a few appearances by the king of cold before it was done! Mr. Freeze appeared in three episodes of the popular series, voiced by Keith Szarabajka. This beefed up older version of Freeze was captured by Batman and Robin and transported back to Arkham Asylum,...

It's always great to see a crowdfunding project not only get the requisite backing, but also come to fruition so successfully. The 25th September saw the launch of A Brief History Of Time Travel, the six-part audio sitcom written by Seb Patrick and James Hunt (whose names may sound familiar thanks to their fine pieces of work for this very website).
Having exceeded their £3,000 goal by more than two grand late last year, the project was put into production, with the distinctive tones of Robert Llewellyn providing the voice of the Narrator, and Jon Shaw, Henry Imbert, Joanna Eliot and Ian Symes cast as the members of an enforcement agency fated to leap through various moments in history thanks to a malfunctioning time machine.

Having already been featured in television, books, and film, it was only a matter of time before Comic-Con culture got the videogame treatment. Inspired by San Diego’s annual gathering of sci-fi-, fantasy-, and superhero-loving geeks, Comic ConQuest is a tactical role-playing game adventure set within a sprawling comic book and science fiction convention. Much like the crowded show floor at Sdcc, Comic ConQuest is filled with fans dressed as their favorite fictional characters; unlike ComicCon’s cos-players, however, the game’s costumed attendees actually possess the powers of those they’re pretending to be.

Over on Xbox.com, the first screens from Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner's Karateka have appeared, giving us a look at the cel-shaded art style of the martial arts adventure game/fighter.
Boasting a November 14th release date, soundtrack by Grammy Award winning composer Christopher Tin (Civilization V), and art by Batman: The Animated Series' Jeff Matsuda, Karakteka resurrects the 1984 side-scrolling action game for the 360.
I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the revamped art style, which appears to use flat textures for the main parts of characters' costumes and faces for more detailed elements in things like belts and other adornments. I'm not all that taken with the Ui elements though, which frankly look like Photoshopped placeholders for actual health bars.
Liquid Entertainment is the studio behind the remake with D3Publisher handling the publishing duties.

“Wonder Woman” producer Bruce Timm and director Lauren Montgomery had very little time between that film and their work on “Green Lantern: First Flight,” but luckily they had a sturdy crutch to lean on — Jose Lopez.
Lopez is responsible for a large portion of the designs in “First Flight,” Timm told reporters, and his work on the project was the exact fresh take Timm wanted in order to distinguish the film from his “Justice League” animated series.
“We’ve done quite a bit with the Green Lantern and characters on the ‘Justice League’ [cartoons], including the entire Green Lantern Corps, and we certainly didn’t want to go back and reuse any of those designs,” Timm said. “Jose Lopez, who had worked with Mike Goguen and Jeff Matsuda on the recent ‘The Batman‘ series, was brought to our attention. I looked at his portfolio and I thought, ‘Wow, this guy is really cool.

Marvel has had varying degrees of success with the direct-to-video efforts but the program continues and there’s little surprise that the most recent offering featured Wolverine, given the release this week of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. What is odd is that Lionsgate chose to release the video Hulk Vs. in January, too late for the holidays and too early to capitalize on the Fox feature.
The two-disc set features separate Hulk features and shine very different lights on the character. In the first, Wolverine is assigned to hunt down a monster crossing the border from America, codenamed the Hulk. Along the way, the two battle with much carnage but then the plot is complicated by the arrival of several foes from throughout Weapon X’s career – Lady Deathstrike, Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Deadpool. In the 37 minute story, there are numerous flashbacks to the Weapon X program and how Logan was turned into a living weapon.
