To mark the 20th anniversary of Kevin Smith's celebrated black comedy Clerks, its grungy, punky soundtrack will be released for the first time ever on vinyl. The original soundtrack's mix of dialogue from the movie ("I'm not even supposed to be here today!") and tunes by some of the leading groups of the alternative era will now play out across three sides of two LPs — the final side will contain an etching— and will be available on November 11th.

Instead of the bells and whistles that populated Jimmy Fallon's first Tonight Show (a U2 rooftop concert, 14 celebrities stopping by to throw down $100), former Saturday Night Live head writer Seth Meyers opted for a more subdued approach to his Late Night debut. It was what I hope will be a series of astute moves as the erstwhile "Weekend Update" anchor enters his job-transition phase. Like Fallon when he first took over Late Night in 2009, Meyers needs some time to ease into the new gig. The monologue was little more than an "Update" rehash,...

Jimmy Fallon may be poised to take over the Tonight Show, but after yesterday's announcement that Fred Armisen would join Seth Meyers on Late Night as its bandleader, Fallon is already joking about a move back to the 12:35 a.m. slot.
Why Fred Armisen Is One of the 50 Funniest People Now
"I gave [Fred] my e-mail today, and I said, 'I can play guitar!'" Fallon told Vulture in a brief interview. "So I have to audition, but I think I have an in. I'm always there for him, if he needs me.

It’s no joke: Comedian Fred Armisen really has joined Seth Meyers’ Late Night as bandleader-slash-music-”curator.” He’ll be helming the talk show’s house band — a talented group that also includes guitarist Seth Jabour of Les Savy Fav, bassist Syd Butler of Les Savy Fav, keyboardist Eli Janney of Girls Against Boys, and drummer Kim Thompson of Beyoncé’s touring band — even when he’s busy with other projects, like IFC’s Portlandia.

Speaking with the press last month, new "Late Night" host Seth Meyers admitted he wasn't as plugged into the music scene as his predecessor Jimmy Fallon was. Not to worry: He's hired a bandleader with plenty of music -- and comedy -- cred.
Meyers' former "Saturday Night Live" co-star Fred Armisen will be the leader of The 8G Band, named for the studio where "Late Night with Seth Meyers" will tape. Meyers tweeted a picture of the band Monday (Feb. 10):

Girls Against Boys announced its reunion earlier this year with a new single, and now the group has released a full Ep, its first since 1996’s Disco Six Six Six. The Ghost List is out Sept. 24 on Epitonic, and its lead single, “60 Is Greater Than 15,” is below. The group’s last official tour was in 2002, and it last played together at a one-off show in 2006. D.C. post-hardcore act and Touch And Go Records darlings Girls Against Boys have reunited following a 10-year hiatus. The group led by Eli Janney last released a full-length record in 2002, but will be dropping an Ep sometime this year. The first single, “It’s A Diamond Life,” is already streaming and available for download at Consequence Of Sound. So listen to that, then go put on Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby for old times’ sake. The group also has a number of tour dates coming up. They’re mostly in Europe, but September finds it hitting New York ...

The pull quotes for this one aren't particularly good. "Intoxicating. Shocking." - Drew Taylor, The Playlist/IndieWire. "Seductive. Monstrous." - Drew Tinnin, Dread Central. Four words that basically mean nothing plastered onto the cover of a film that amounts to basically nothing. What are we trying to say about Girls Against Boys? Is it intoxicating because there’s alcohol involved? Seductive because Lu, the ginger, prances around in her underwear and plays Single White Female with our lead? Did the “Drews” see the same movie I did?

Just a couple of days after the Oscars, you'd think there might be a handful of nominees trying to capitalize on the extra exposure, but it's actually a pretty slow week with the exception of P.T. Anderson's The Master (which is definitely a buy). Oscar-nominated documentary How to Survive a Plague also hits stores this week along with Leos Carax's divisive art house classic Holy Motors. Other less prestigious releases include The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 (which hits stores on Saturday), feminist thriller Girls Against Boys and Chasing Mavericks starring Gerard Butler. The Coen Brothers' The Hudsucker Proxy also debuts on Blu-ray through the Warner Archive Collection, while Criterion offers up new editions of Chronicle of a Summer and Sansho the Bailiff. Will you be picking up anything this week? Check out the full list of new releases after the jump. Amazon.com Widgets

Girls Against Boys is the story of a women fed up with the mistreatment and abuse she receives from the men around her. A coworker with a vicious streak convinces her to exact a brutal revenge but may take her to a point from which theres no turning back. It basically feels like a raperevenge movie using the ideas of the 70s and 80s has been smashed into another raperevenge movie with more modern sensibilities.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a PG-rated film head in to the appeals process and I've been doing these articles for a long time. Other than that, what follows are the latest MPAA ratings from Bulletin #2237. #Holdyourbreath Rated R For strong bloody violence, sexual content, language and some drug use. Bigfoot County Rated R For pervasive language and a brief sexual assault. Down The Shore Rated R For language and some drug use. Electrick Children Rated R For language including brief sexual references. Escape Fire: The Fight To Rescue American Healthcare Rated PG-13 For some thematic material. SXSW 2012 film review
complete coverage of SXSW Film 2012
In Our Nature
Director & Screenwriter: Brian Savelson
Taking place over a single weekend, an estranged father and son accidentally end up in the same country house with their two girlfriends.
Cast: Zach Gilford, Jena Malone, John Slattery, Gabrielle Union
(World Premiere)
Film Synopsis (from SXSW.com)
Who’S It For?: If you like John Slattery, don’t miss this one. If you like Gabrielle Union when she’s actually acting, don’t miss this one. If you’re interested in seeing a dialogue-driven movie that rarely feels boring, definitely don’t miss this one.
Overall
At SXSW this year there were many notable victories in acting, writing, and directing, but no movie achieved such a hat trick more impressively than In Our Nature. It is such a strong movie that it features four people talking about their problems, and it’s actually really exciting.

SXSW is officially done for another year. Well, technically, it's been done since Saturday, but it's taken a few days for The Playlist team members to emerge from their BBQ & queso comas. Nevertheless, the film strand of the festival is over and it's time to look forward, to Tribeca, Cannes and whatever else lies beyond.
And we have to confess, from most people that we've talked to, the line-up turned out to be somewhat underwhelming this time around. For whatever reason (a comparatively strong Sundance, perhaps?), there were few breakout hits that hadn't played at other festivals first. Indeed, the movies that emerged with the best reactions were mainstream studio pictures, in the shape of "21 Jump Street" and "The Cabin In the Woods," with no breakout buzz films to rival "Attack The Block" or "Weekend" last year.
Not that the festival was a wash out: while there were few stunning surprises,...

Next year sees the 20th anniversary of Reservoir Dogs. But while the 70s and 80s were golden years for cinema, what's the best we can say of the decade that followed?
You can't choose your family, so the cliche goes, and neither do you get a say in the era you come of age. For me, cinematically at least, the timing was cruelly double-edged. Yes, as an 80s adolescent I spent formative evenings gawping in front of Blue Velvet, Brazil and so on; but by the time I was old enough to make £4 an hour in one of Soho's few non-porno video shops and spend all my spare time in cinemas, the rather less magical 90s had rolled around.
And therein lies the rub. Because mulching the cinema of an entire decade down into a single impression is, of course, an insanely reductive business. But it's one almost all of...

With the plot surrounding an east German transgender rock musician in the 1980’s who undergoes a botched reassignment surgery leaving her with an ‘angry inch’ all so she can escape communist Germany with her new husband, the music can be nothing but campy, glam and amazing. Written by Stephan Trask and performed by Hedwig herself, James Mitchell, the songs are explosive, exploring the ideas of ideology, love and destiny and sung with the raw power and emotion akin to the likes of David Bowie and Frank Zappa. In fact the soundtrack has been so popular that in 2003 a CD of covers was released named ‘Wig in a Box’ featuring artists such as Yoko Ono and Cyndi Lauper.
Diving into the music, what is most prominent and beautiful about it is the vividness of character and imagery that the songs draw on and create. For instance, ‘The Origin of Love’ is...
