Released in 1992, the erotic girls-with-guns thriller “Naked Killer”, written and produced by Wong Jing, the crowd-pleasing, prolific filmmaker and starring Chingmy Yau and Carrie Ng later reached a cult status. A decade later, he’s back with “Naked Weapon” but with a different director and filmed in English in order to attract the international audience.
The movie kicks off in Rome; a beautiful lady arrives at a hotel, goes to a room and kills a man with her bare hands after performing some sort of erotic dance moves first . More dead bodies start to pile up while she makes her escape and her car is finally blown up leaving her fatally injured. Her boss, Madame M (Almen Wong) promptly shows up and kills her in cold blood, while two CIA agents on surveillance also meet the same fate. But agent Jack Chen (Daniel Wu) manages to escape without a scratch.

According to Wikipedia, A mockumentary (a portmanteau of mock and documentary) or docucomedy is a type of movie or television show depicting fictional events but presented as a documentary. The genre gained recognition (notoriety if you prefer) with “Borat“, although some may remember the 1984 “This is Spinal Tap” or the excellent Belgian “Man Bites Dog“. In Asian cinema, the mockumentary occasionally has a different form, with Shohei Imamura blending documentary with theater and fourth-wall-breaking surrealism in “A Man Vanishes” for example, although recently, a number of productions seem to follow the international “rules” of the subcategory. Without further ado, here are 10 of the most intriguing samples one can find in Asian cinema, in chronological order.
*We took some liberties with the films in the list, essentially mocking the term (film nerd humor)
1. A Man Vanishes
The film starts as a documentary of sorts, regarding the disappearance of plastic salesman Oshima that occurred two years previously.

I was a huge fan of the first film in what now looks to be a burgeoning new martial arts film franchise. The Man With the Iron Fists was everything I love about martial arts movie and was obviously a labour of love for its star and Wu_Tang Clan member RZA. Sadly, despite the out-pouring of love from wuxia fans and internet geeks like myself, the film did not perform as well as I’m sure the studio would’ve liked. But that doesn’t stop the franchise from continuing as a direct-to-market series – and so we have The Man With the Iron Fists 2.
This time round Thaddeus (RZA) washes ashore...

RZA's "The Man With the Iron Fists" hit theaters in 2012 and earned $19 million worldwide on a budget of $15 million. Despite the fact that Universal Pictures clearly lost money, it proceeded with a direct-to-dvd sequel. Today we have a trailer for "The Man With the Iron Fists 2," which is coming to DVD, Blu-ray and VOD on April 14th. RZA reprises his role as the enigmatic blacksmith Thaddeus for the sequel, which follows a mysterious stranger as he leads a rebellion to liberate a Chinese village from its oppressive overlord. The cast includes Dustin Nguyen (22 Jump Street), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (47 Ronin), Eugenia Yuan (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend), Pim Bubear (Ninja: Shadow of a Tear), Carl Ng (New Police Story), Simon Yin (Ip Man), Ocean Hou (Man of Tai Chi), Grace Huang (The Man with the Iron Fists) and Andrew Lin (The Man with the Iron Fists). Sensory deprivation can cause strange events to happen. When the participant is willing to be placed in a coffin, and let the lid be hammered shut, one song comes to mind, “Welcome to my Nightmare.” No, Alice Cooper isn't going to sing in the dark. Instead, what those people will hear is the chanting of psalms. The Thai ritual of purification is now set to begin.
Simply titled Coffin, this film exposes the life and times of Chris (Ananda Everingham) and Su (Karen Mok). These two individuals undergo this renewal process which begins with them learning this bizarre true-to-life event, the Non Loeng Sadorcro ceremony. And when they arrive at the Wat Prommanee temple in Nakhon Nayok, about 100km northeast of Bangkok, to participate in this ritual, that’s when the fun begins.

Director: Ekachai Uekrongtham. Review: Adam Wing. Legend has it that in Thailand you can spend the night in a specially designed coffin and cheat death, many people have claimed that such an event has changed their lives for the better. To prolong his girlfriend's life, architect Chris (Ananda Everingham) overcomes his claustrophobia and participates in the real life mass coffin ritual. Diagnosed with terminal cancer one week before her wedding, Hong Kong nutritionist Sue (Karen Mok) abandons her life in the hope of cheating death as well. As is usually the case in this kind of thing, events don’t quite go according to plan (there’ll be no hugs and puppies on this one) and it’s not long before consequences far worse than death come a knocking. Come a crawling. Come a creeping… you get the idea. The fifth instalment of the Final Destination series is fooling around...

Very interesting stuff here for fans of Hong Kong director Pang Ho-Cheung and Asian horror in general. Hong Kong film journalist Frederic Ambroisine had the chance to visit the set of the film a little while back and while there recorded a lengthy video interview with special effects man Andrew Lin. Lin gives the interview entirely in English - Ambroisine adds French subtitles if you prefer - and beyond just talking about what he’s done for the film actually shows off several examples. Very nice. We’ve got a quick teaser for the interview below the break to give a taste and you can hit the link below to find the entire thing!
