“The Jungle Book” is on its way to VFX Oscar gold after getting five Ves nods Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton. “Rogue One,” the “Star Wars” standalone, however, came away empty-handed after receiving seven nominations.

How could Ava DuVernay, a former Hollywood publicist and Sundance-winning director of a movie that cost just $200,000, be the one to break the long trail of futility in mounting a major movie that conveyed how much of a galvanizing presence Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was in the battle for civil rights in America? Coming aboard Selma after the previous star package cratered under Lee Daniels, DuVernay found herself with David Oyelowo’s determination to play Mlk, a Paul Webb script and little else. The director (who made uncredited contributions to the script) managed to navigate around formidable obstacles, not the least of which were copyrights on Mlk signature speeches held by his estate. After platforming the film for Oscars, Paramount opens it wide this Friday. Brilliant. It was very, very well done. This was about Great Britain; it didn't pretend it was trying to have global appeal. Because Great Britain has self-confidence, it doesn't need a monumental Olympics. But for China that was the only imaginable kind of international event. Beijing's Olympics were very grand – they were trying to throw a party for the world, but the hosts didn't enjoy it. The government didn't care about people's feelings because it was trying to create an image.
In London, they really turned the ceremony into a party – they are proud of themselves and respect where they come from, from the industrial revolution to now. I never saw an event before that had such a density of information about events and stories...

I started a spreadsheet this year to track all of the movies I watch. This includes just watching a movie out of the blue, at a screening, for DVD/Blu-ray review, etc. I've never done this before, but I've been wondering recently just how many movies I actually watch each year. So far, after 15 days I've watched 20 movies in 2011. In honesty, the number shocked me at first, but the more I thought about it I really don't think a day goes by that I don't watch a movie.
A movie usually serves as my night cap once the day is done and I'm ready to call it quits. I may not finish it that night, but by the end of the next day it's done. So the fact I've already seen five more movies in 2011 than there have been days isn't as surprising as it may seem. After all, it is my job.

Allison Strong, Union City, N.J.I love September and all that it brings: the crunch of fall leaves under my sneakers, the smell of pumpkin spice singing in the air, and the taste of my birthday cake as I savor each forkful. Maybe I'm just a college-loving weirdo, but back-to-school time instantly cheers me up. In my mind it translates to back-to-questionable-dining-hall food, back-to-procrastinating-on-my-piano-homework time, and back-to-auditioning-for-school-productions excitement. Perhaps the only thing I don't love about September is the weather change. After a summer of sparkling health, I stepped off the plane from Colombia, only to be met by a throat infection that nearly sabotaged my audition for "Sweeney Todd" at Montclair State. I'd been half-anticipating, half-dreading this audition since May and had been preparing for the role of Johanna, Sweeney's yellow-haired daughter.
