‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ just released its third episode, and the reactions have been more intense than the show itself. This episode stirred controversy by featuring a group of gay space witches who supposedly use the Force to create children. Osha and Mae are proof of this.
Whether you think this bold move is “stunning and brave” or believe that Star Wars is now ruined, you have to admit that Headland was brave to include this, especially knowing how fans usually react to changes in the franchise.
We won’t know if the show breaks any canon until we learn the full story of Osha and Mae. We’re also eager to find out more about the Witches of Brendok, who are different from the Witches of Dathomir. The Witches of Dathomir are already a well-known part of the canon, especially after their big role in the recent ‘Ahsoka’ series.

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ recently released its third episode, and the reactions have been better than the show itself. It was a highly controversial episode that included the coven of Gay space witches who apparently dabbled in creating kids with the Force. Osha & Mae are a living testament to that.
No matter whether you consider this radical move “stunning & brave” or you’re in the crowd that claims that Star Wars is now literally dead, you have gotta admit Headland had courage to include something like this, knowing from past reactions how fandom reacts to every bit of change in the franchise.
We won’t know whether the show in any way breaks canon until the full origin of Osha & Mae is revealed. We are also looking forward to learning more about Witches of Brendok, who are a separate entity from Witches of Dathomir. Witches of Dathomir are by now...

The third episode of The Acolyte is now streaming on Disney+, and it takes us back 16 years into the past to reveal what led to Force-sensitive sisters Osha and Mae falling out, and why the former believed the latter to be dead.
Spoilers ahead.
In "Destiny," we learn that the twins lived as part of a coven of Force-sensitive witches on the planet Brendok. A group of Jedi interrupt an ascension ceremony for the sisters being led by one of their mothers, Aniseya, in an attempt to recruit the children to the Jedi order.
Osha wants to be a Jedi, but Mae implores her sibling to stay with their coven, causing a rift that ultimately leads to the latter setting a fire which (seemingly) results in the deaths of everyone in the coven.
There's definitely more to this story (let's just say there's a reason Mae wants a certain group...

[This story contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Acolyte‘s third episode, “Destiny.”]
As soon as Star Wars: The Acolyte stars Jodie Turner-Smith and Rebecca Henderson stepped foot onto their South East England-based set, they immediately fell under the spell of a galaxy far, far away. Turner-Smith first visited the stage on a day where she wasn’t working, simply because she couldn’t pass up the chance to witness a particularly fateful duel.
“I actually went to visit set during the scene where Amandla Stenberg’s character fights Carrie-Anne Moss’ character, and I really was just like, ‘Oh my God, this is Star Wars,’” Turner-Smith tells The Hollywood Reporter. “That was definitely my first ‘whoa,’ and I wasn’t even in costume yet.”
Despite being new to Star Wars, Turner-Smith found herself in familiar territory, as her frequent collaborator, Kogonada, directed her in the third and seventh episodes of the Leslye Headland-created mystery-thriller series.

‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ recently aired its third episode, and it has sparked significant controversy. The episode is a flashback that explores events on the planet Brendok 16 years before the main storyline. It introduces a secretive coven of witches, similar to the Nightsisters of Dathomir, who possess unique Force abilities distinct from the Jedi and Sith.
Osha and Mae, the only children on Brendok, strongly hint at being born from the power of the Force. In a conversation between Mother Aniseya and Mother Koril, there are implications about their unusual conception, suggesting Mother Aniseya may have had a role in their creation. This echoes a famous line from ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,’ where it was said about Anakin Skywalker: “There is no father.”
Mother Koril supposedly carried the twins physically, while Mother Aniseya created them through unconventional means, likely manipulating the Force or guiding it until life emerged.

While we now have good reason to believe The Acolyte's Mae and Osha are a Force Dyad, today's episode - titled "Destiny" - drops a major revelation about how they were conceived.
In a flashback to their childhood, it's revealed that the twins are part of a coven of witches who have mastered the Force. They use it in a way that's slightly reminiscent of Dathomir's witches, but also in a manner that seems wholly unique to them.
While the women in the coven are clearly powerful, their abilities extend well beyond simply using the Force.
During a discussion about Osha's desire to join the Jedi Order, we learn that the twins have no father. Instead, they were conceived through the Force; however, while Mother Koril carried them, Mother Aniseya points out that she "created" them.

This Star Wars: The Acolyte article contains spoilers.
Although we’re officially three episodes into The Acolyte’s eight-episode run, we’re no closer to figuring out who Mae’s (Amandla Stenberg) Sith master is. Still, that hasn’t stopped the theories from running wild about who’s under the black helmet, including a few fingers already pointed at Charlie Barnett’s Yord as well as Qimir (Manny Jacinto). Yet, the third episode introduces another potential suspect who might be pulling the strings from the shadows while appearing as a benevolent figure when not in Sith guise.

We knew from the beginning that something tragic happened to the coven of witches, with both Mae and Osha (played in a dual role by Stenberg) assuming the other had perished. But we learn...

There will be spoilers for the third episode of "Star Wars: The Acolyte," so beware.
The road to hell is always paved with the best of intentions, and that's the moral of a lot of fairy tales. It's something George Lucas hammered home pretty directly when he wrote the prequel trilogy, as we watched Anakin Skywalker's slow descent into evil. The overriding desire to do the right thing -- even in the face of great evil -- is ultimately what drove Anakin Skywalker to the Dark side and the downfall of the Jedi order. He wanted the power to influence the midi-chlorians to cheat death and protect those he cared about. Under the manipulative influence of the Sith lord Darth Sidious, Anakin succumbed to his worst impulses for what he thought were the best of reasons.

The third episode of The Acolyte, titled "Destiny," opens on a planet called Brendok where we find a young Mae and Osha. Each of them can use the Force, but do so very differently, with Mae clearly inclined to be cruel to the local wildlife while using her powers.
There's a clear divide between the twins and Osha doesn't seem to care much for her sister. We learn that their coven plans for them to go through an ascension, a process the future Jedi has little interest in.
She doesn't wish to be like her two mothers and rejects the idea of becoming a witch. It's also revealed that the coven was exiled, hunted, and forced into hiding simply because some, presumably the Jedi, view their power as "dark" and "unnatural.

The Star Wars universe was kickstarted by George Lucas decades ago and has since evolved and taken a shape that fans have not necessarily loved. After Disney acquired the space opera franchise in 2012, there have been several hits and misses, more misses than there were actual hits. The Acolyte seems to be on the same path even though its critical reviews have been better than expected.

Star Wars: The Acolyte episode 3 delves into Mae and Osha’s complicated past, giving us the foundations of their conflict. Here’s our review.
Before we dive into The Acolyte episode 3, just a disclaimer that these reviews will include mild spoilers for the episode in question but will discuss previous episodes with heavy spoilers. So if you haven’t seen The Acolyte episodes 1 and 2, you might want to watch those before reading what we have to say about episode 3.
Still here? Excellent. On with the show!
The Acolyte got off to a wobbly start last week with two episodes. The new Star Wars series was sold as a darker, more violent entry into the franchise and one that would feature more Siths than we’ve seen before. The first two episodes gave us no indication of that and, in all honesty, episode 3 doesn’t give us much hope that The...

The Acolyte Episode 3 Explores a New Perspective on the Force - Main Image
The recently-aired episode 3 of The Acolyte offered a new perspective on the Force that is different from any of the previous portrayals that we've seen before in the Star Wars franchise.

With its High Republic setting, the series has an opportunity to explore new mythology and lore that we haven't seen in the live-action projects, and the new episode expanded the concept of the Force in ways the franchise hasn't done in the past.

The Star Wars universe has a unique characteristic, where it leaves you shocked when you least expected it. So has happened with its newest ‘stand-alone’ series, The Acolyte. Opening with a bang that one least predicted, the series is certainly one that fans should watch out for, even though its reception pre-release was one of the worst ones that a Star Wars project has ever received.

Mae and Osha may be twins, but they want very different things out of life. That disconnect was prevalent in Star Wars: The Acolyte’s flashback episode on Tuesday, set 16 years in the past on their home planet of Brendok.
The Force-sensitive girls were to participate in the Ascension, a special ceremony during which they’d become witches and join their family’s coven. While Mae was honored to perform the task, Osha had her reservations. She wasn’t sure that that was what she wanted.

There will be mild spoilers for the third episode of "Star Wars: The Acolyte," so beware.
"He can see things before they happen," Qui-Gon Jinn tells Shmi Skywalker about her son Anakin in "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace." He explains to her that if he had been born in the Republic, he'd have been identified early and trained as a Jedi. Then, curiously, he asks her who the boy's father was.
"There was no father," Anakin's mother tells the venerable Jedi. "I carried him. I gave birth. I can't explain what happened."
Qui-Gon explains later that this is a vergence in the Force and that Anakin (whose age was a struggle for George Lucas to decide) was conceived of the midi-chlorians themselves; the building blocks of life and a pathway through which living things can hear the will of the Force. This virgin birth took audiences by surprise, but it...

The first two episodes of The Acolyte introduced a Jedi-killing assassin named Mae who was working for an unnamed masked Sith Lord. Mae had an identical twin sister, Osha, who was blamed for the murder of Jedi Master Indara. Since Osha was a former Jedi herself, the Jedi High Council was worried that if the rumors turned out to be true, then their political rivals would use this incident to gain momentum. So, Jedi Master Sol, Jedi Knight Yord, and Padawan Jecki Lon were sent to get to the bottom of this. During this period, Mae killed Jedi Master Torbin and highlighted the fact that she was going after those Jedi who were stationed on Brendok and were likely responsible for the death of her tribe. To make matters even more complicated, everyone thought that Mae had died on Brendok, and Mae was under the impression that Osha had died there.

There will be spoilers for the third episode of "Star Wars: The Acolyte," so beware.
The third episode of "Star Wars: The Acolyte" transports us back in time 16 years to the days leading up to the tragedy that allowed Osha (played as an adult by Amandla Stenberg and as a child by Lauren & Leah Brady) to be taken by the Jedi and to assume her sister, Mae (played by the aforementioned acting trio) was dead. In the last episode, we watched Master Torbin die by suicide with the poison offered to him by Mae, rather than face the pain of living with the consequences of what happened that night sixteen prior. This episode shows us, from at least one point of view, what happened during that fateful encounter, but it also introduces us to the family of Mae and Osha.

This article from the Disney+ series The Acolyte (2024) Season 1 Episode 3 contains significant spoilers.
The third episode of the Disney+ streaming series The Acolyte begins with the origin story of Mae and Osha on the planet of Brendok. They are children, and Osha is in a lush green forest playing with a pink-winged creature that looks like a Star Wars version of a hummingbird. Mae then comes along and begins to control the creature with the Force, which upsets Osha.
Why? It appears Mae is using the Force to control (or even punish) the creature against its will. They make up, but then Mother Coral approaches them. She berates them, telling Mae and Osha they cannot be out here alone. She whisks them back to safety, not knowing Sol is watching them from behind a tree.

This Star Wars: The Acolyte review contains spoilers.
You know what’s awesome about the third episode of The Acolyte? It’s got weight to it. There are powerful, sophisticated ideas woven beautifully throughout the story, and while there aren’t any earth-shattering revelations to speak of, seeing with our own eyes the series of catastrophic events that caused the parade of forlorn, ruminative faces in the first two episodes offers considerable emotional context that fleshes out all characters involved.
The episode is an origin story of sorts, following Mae and Osha’s (Amandla Stenberg) upbringing among their coven on Brendok 16 years prior to the events of the main storyline. A lot of rich subject matter arises as we delve into the twins’ past—familial asymmetry, sibling abandonment, dogmatic defection. The Star Wars show seems to be coming into its own here with some genuine substance and heavy tension between the characters.

"The Acolyte" debuted on Disney+ last week, and the new "Star Wars" series provided the streaming service with its biggest premiere of 2024, even though it wasn't quite as impressive as the "Ahsoka" premiere last year. Critics have lauded the new series from creator Leslye Headland, but of course, the more toxic side of "Star Wars" fandom can't be pleased. At the very least, we're playing in an entirely new sandbox in the galaxy far, far away, one that doesn't require an extensive amount of "Star Wars" knowledge or homework to enjoy it, and that's rather refreshing.
However, whether you like "The Acolyte" overall or not, I think every "Star Wars" fan can agree that it's always a hoot when the sci-fi franchise introduces a new cool little dude to make us smile. In this case, it's a pocket-sized droid called Pip, who hangs around with Osha Aniseya (Amandla Stenberg) and...

The first episode of The Acolyte, "Lost / Found," ended with the introduction of The Master, a mysterious new villain who is almost certainly a Sith Lord. He wields a red lightsaber and intends to destroy the Jedi, so short of us meeting a new group of dark side Force users, this character must come before Darth Plagueis and Emperor Palpatine.
Fans have been speculating ever since about who might be beneath the mask and, given the secrecy surrounding who he is both in the show and promotional materials, The Master must be either a character we've met in the series or someone from the wider Star Wars franchise.
However, it seems the Loth-cat is now out of the bag.

In the opening scene of The Acolyte, we witness a dramatic confrontation between Jedi Master Indara, played by Carrie-Anne Moss, and her adversary Mae, portrayed by Amandla Stenberg. This fight scene introduces a fresh lightsaber rule that causes both the character and the audience to reevaluate what they know about these iconic weapons. New Insights into Lightsaber Ethics The rule mentioned by Mae—A Jedi doesn’t pull her weapon unless prepared to kill—adds a layer of tension to their duel. It reflects an older ideology from the High Republic era, where lightsabers were seen as weapons of last resort. This resonates...

Leslye Headland is not a tentative person. She pauses before speaking, but not because she’s waffling about what to say. More because she’s a writer and how is almost as important as what she says, and also because we’re talking about The Acolyte, her upcoming TV show set in the Star Wars universe during the High Republic (for the non-saber-pilled among us, that’s about 100 years before The Phantom Menace, the beginning of what’s referred to as the Skywalker Saga, when Sith happens). What Happened in Episodes 1 & 2 of The Acolyte?
The Acolyte begins with the assassination of one of the Jedi Order's members – Master Indara. She dies at the hands of a mysterious avenger who wants to put an end to her perpetrators.
Another high-ranking member of the Order, Master Sol, is tasked with finding out what happened and identifying the killer. And the prime suspect turns out to be his former student, Osha. The girl is arrested, charged, and witnesses to the crime identify her as Indara's killer. However, as it turns out, the main character's twin sister, Mae, is responsible for the murder.
