It’s the arc that “The Crown” fans have waited for and dreaded: Princess Diana dies in Episode 3 of the Netflix series’ sixth and final season (returning as a spirit for the fourth and final episode of Part 1). While the fourth episode focuses on the aftermath of her death, the first three zero in on their relationship in the weeks leading up to their car crash in the Paris tunnel.
As usual with Peter Morgan’s fact-based drama, some truly wild stuff happens — and some of it is even true! But “The Crown” has always been slightly more interested in emotional truth than in a strict historical record, which means the line between fact and fiction tends to blur. And while many viewers have vivid memories of Diana’s death and the events in its wake, decades of documentaries, biopics, books, and conspiracy theories have made what led up to it hazy.

Spoiler Alert: This news story features details from Season 6 of The Crown
Exclusive: Netflix series The Crown has been accused of fabricating Mohamed Al-Fayed’s role in playing matchmaker to Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed.
Season 6 has dropped on Netflix and the opening episodes chronicle the burgeoning romance between Diana and Dodi in the sun-soaked surroundings of the Mediterranean.
Peter Morgan’s lavish royal drama repeatedly implies that the relationship was engineered by Al-Fayed, the late Egyptian business mogul, as part of his ambition to obtain British citizenship.
This allegation was refuted in 1997 and Michael Cole, Al-Fayed’s former spokesperson, has gone on record again to deny that his ex-boss was involved in Diana and Dodi’s fateful romance.

The storylines in the fifth season of The Crown have provoked much backlash, from scenes showing the former Prince Charles trying to force the Queen’s abdication to others suggesting Prince Philip was unfaithful to the late monarch.
Prominent figures, including Judi Dench, have demanded that the drama carry a disclaimer to make clear that the events of the series aren’t entirely factual. While The Crown actor Jonathan Pryce, has called these reactions to the show “hugely disappointing”, claiming that viewers know it’s a drama, not a documentary.
Some of the storylines in season five are pretty close to the truth. Others, not so much.

“The Crown” is back — and so is the Netflix series’ accompanying drama about what is and is not factually accurate. This season feels particularly explosive, as the first batch of episodes to take place in the oh-so-well-documented 1990s. Among the many topics tackled are the dissolution of marriages, the discovery of the remains of the Tsar of Russia and his family, the election of Tony Blair — and Prince Philip’s obsession with carriage driving.
In order to sift through what is historically accurate and what is merely conjecture (if not outright dramatic fiction), we turn to the Internet’s favorite arbiter of fact versus fantasy: Jonathan Frakes, the host of late ’90s meme-fave “Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction.” Are these “um, what?!?” moments true? Or is Peter Morgan just pulling the crown over our eyes?
Did Prince Charles really cut short his second honeymoon with Diana and their children?

In season five of "The Crown," which premiered on Netflix on Nov. 9, Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) has her first romantic relationships since separating from Prince Charles (Dominic West). Diana dates Dr. Hasnat Khan (Humayun Saeed), though their romance ends in 1997. Diana's next - and final - boyfriend is also introduced over the course of the season's 10 episodes: Dodi Fayed, played by Khalid Abdalla. Ahead, we're breaking down who Dodi was and the role he played in Diana's life.
Who Is Dodi Fayed?
Dodi was the eldest son of Mohamed Al-Fayed and was born in Alexandria in 1955. Episode three of season five, titled "Mou Mou," focuses on Mohamed's life story. Mohamed was a businessman, and, as the show portrays him, he was intent on working his way into the upper crust of British society. He and his brothers had a successful shipping company. In 1979, he bought the Ritz Hotel in Paris.

When Prime Minister John Major (Jonny Lee Miller) carefully suggests in the fifth season premiere of Netflix’s The Crown that the British royal family might consider paying for repairs to their aging yacht out of their own coffers, rather than asking taxpayers to foot the bill, Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) pushes back with a personal appeal. “When I came to the throne, all my palaces were inherited. Windsor, Balmoral, Sandringham — they all bear the stamp of my predecessors,” she tells him. “Only Britannia have I truly been able to make my own.”
It’s a striking statement, in a number of ways. For one, the very phrase “all my palaces” invokes levels of privilege unthinkable to most. For another, it suggests the Queen herself struggles within a system designed to protect her role at the cost of her individuality. And if...

Variety can exclusively reveal the first look of Dr. Hasnat Khan, played by prominent Pakistani star Humayun Saeed, in Season 5 of hit Netflix series “The Crown.”
British-Pakistani doctor Hasnat Khan was a heart surgeon at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital, where he first met Princess Diana in 1995. Diana struck up a friendship with him, depicted in “The Crown” as taking place while she was visiting a friend whose husband was undergoing surgery with Khan.
Khan’s 2004 statement to the Metropolitan Police, which was submitted in 2008 to an inquest into Princess Diana’s death, stated that he was in a relationship with her from 1995-1997 and that she broke up with him after she met Dodi Fayed at a holiday with Mohamed Al Fayed and his family.
Dodi Fayed and Princess Diana died together in a road accident in Paris in 1997.
Saeed told Variety: “Dr. Hasnat Khan and Princess Diana were total opposites.

Netflix’s The Crown, poised to drop Season 5 on November 6, is irrefutable proof of America’s continuing fascination with England’s royal family. The series opens with Elizabeth’s wedding to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947 and Season 4 wraps with the resignation of longtime Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
Along the way, the series, created and principally written by Peter Morgan, delivers all the insider drama and palace intrigue one would expect in a drama about the royals. The series is produced for Netflix by Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television.
Reinforcing its popularity, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, the show’s first two seasons bounced back into Netflix’s Top 10 shows, according to the streaming service.

Prominent Pakistani star Humayun Saeed has been cast as Dr. Hasnat Khan in Season 5 of hit Netflix series “The Crown,” Variety has confirmed.
Dr. Khan is a British-Pakistani heart surgeon who practiced at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital. Khan’s 2004 statement to the Metropolitan Police, which was submitted in 2008 to an inquest into Princess Diana’s death, stated that he was in a relationship with her from 1995-1997 and that she broke up with him after she met Dodi Fayed at a holiday with Mohammed Al Fayed and his family.
In the statement, submitted from Pakistan where he had relocated, Dr. Khan said that he had considered a life with Princess Diana, but the situation with the press, who hounded her every move, would make it untenable. In the statement, submitted from Pakistan where he had relocated, Dr. Khan said that he had considered a life with Princess Diana, but the situation with the press, who hounded her every move, would make it untenable. Jemima Khan, a British television producer and friend of Princess Diana, is exiting a consulting role on the upcoming fifth season of Netflix’s Emmy-winning drama series “The Crown.” In an interview with The Sunday Times (via Vulture), Khan said “The Crown” creator Peter Morgan asked her to consult on the new season of the series. Princess Diana debuted on “The Crown” last season played by Emma Corrin, and the upcoming Season 5 casts Elizabeth Debicki as Diana, and covers the years directly leading up to her death in 1997.
“In 2019, Peter Morgan asked me to co-write on the fifth series of ‘The Crown,’ particularly those episodes which concerned Princess Diana’s last years before she died,” Khan said. “After a great deal of thought, having never spoken publicly about any of this before, I decided to contribute.
“We worked together on the outline and scripts from September 2020 until February 2021,” Khan continued.

On Nov. 6, The Times reported that Princess Diana's best friend, has cut ties with the Netflix series over what is described as a disrespectful portrayal of the late Princess of Wales. The Crown creator, Peter Morgan, hired Jemima to write season-five scripts, which included Diana's life from romances with surgeon Hasnat Khan and Dodi Fayed, the infamous BBC Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, as well as the last two years of her life, which included the tragic Paris car crash in 1997. According the article, Jemima revealed that she pulled out of...
