Latino creators from all corners of music, art, and fashion will be at the center of The Art of Being Latin — a two-day event during Miami Art Week. Tainy, Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto, Sofía Reyes, and other artists are among those who’ll make appearances at the event hosted on Dec. 9 and 10.
The event — hosted by Ntertain, a company led by CEO Lex Borrero — will open with a panel titled “Crafting the Celebrity Image” featuring Storm Pablo, who has styled the likes of Bad Bunny and Jack Harlow.

Now on its fourth year, the Santiago Film Festival’s Morbido-Sanfic Lab features an ever more diverse selection from Ibero-America.
As Morbido founder-ceo Pablo Guisa said of this year’s edition: “It has projects from multiple countries, several produced or directed by women as well as one LGBTQ-themed project and, for the first time, a documentary.” Vampire creatures abound in this crop.
Humberto Mazari, the helmer-scribe-producer behind one of the six projects, psychological thriller “The Alaska Summit” (“La Cumbre de Alaska),” is developing three comic book spinoffs which will further delve into the underworld of the summit and the creatures that guard it. “In the coming weeks we expect to consolidate the visual aesthetics with three Latin American illustrators in charge of bringing these comic books to life,” he told Variety.

Alex Ponce is still healing from heartbreak — and from betrayal. In an exclusive premiere with Rolling Stone on Thursday, the rising Ecuadorian star debuted the video for his new song “Traición,” which is about calling out a love that hurt him.
“I had the honor of making a sad song that helps us get through the type of betrayal that some of us have had to live,” he tells Rolling Stone about the track.
The video, directed by Desperdiciado, follows Ponce in a seemingly normal relationship. Soon, he begins to...

Camilla Parker Bowles, now officially Queen Camilla, didn’t exactly have a quiet entrance into the royal family. Her lengthy affair with Prince Charles blew up in the news in the 1990s, effectively shattering the family dynamic between Charles and his then-wife, Princess Diana, and their two children, Prince William and Prince Harry.
Harry wasn’t shy about what happened behind closed doors with Camilla in his book “Spare” — he openly admitted that he and his brother plead with their father not to marry her. Now, even years later, his body language suggests that he still has difficulty understanding his feelings toward Camilla — at least, according to one expert.

A few years ago, I had the chance to visit the set of the Brazilian horror film The Trace We Leave Behind (a.k.a. O Rastro), which didn’t quite get the big international release it was originally supposed to, but did turn out to be a cool movie. You can read my review at This Link. The Trace We Leave Behind turned out so well, I’m very glad to hear that producer André Pereira has made a new horror film, this time teaming up with History of the Occult director Cristian Ponce for A Mother’s Embrace.
Variety got their hands on a couple first-look images from A Mother’s Embrace, and those can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Directed by Ponce from a script he wrote with Pereira and Gabriela Capello, this film is set in 1996, during one of the biggest storms to ever hit Rio de Janeiro.

The filmmaker behind History of the Occult, which is now streaming on Screambox, Cristian Ponce is back this year with brand new horror movie A Mother’s Embrace.
Brazil’s Lupa Filmes is bringing A Mother’s Embrace to Cannes, and ahead of the festival they’ve shared a couple first-look images with Variety this afternoon.
Set in 1996, during one of the biggest storms to ever hit Rio de Janeiro, A Mother’s Embrace will see a team of firefighters trying to evacuate a nursing home at risk of collapsing.
But its mysterious residents have other plans.
Marjorie Estiano, Chandelly Braz, Javier Drolas, Maria Volpe, Mel Nunes and Reynaldo Machado star.
“One of our biggest influences is John Carpenter, who always tells stories about people stuck in some places they cannot escape,” Cristian Ponce said in a statement.
He added, “We try to create our own mythology here. You could say that these people,...

It’s safe to say that we’re past the infancy stage of consumer-grade virtual reality. Released back in 2016, Sony’s first foray into console-tethered VR was a major leap forward for the industry as one of its biggest players committed to cultivating what could’ve been a flash-in-the-pan trend. It paid off as the PlayStation VR went on to sell very well, only behind the Meta Quest headset in terms of profit.

Underground, the Buenos Aires-based division of Telemundo Streaming Studios (Tss), is adapting for HBO Max Latin America the thriller “Cathedrals” (“Catedrales”) by award-winning noir author Claudia Piñeiro.
This marks the first time Tss is producing a series for the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer.
“We are delighted to announce the development of ‘Catedrales’ for HBO Max in Latin America, exactly the type of fresh and culturally relevant content that today’s audiences expect,” said Juan Ponce, senior VP and general manager of Telemundo Streaming Studios.
Piñeiro, widely regarded as Argentina’s “queen of noir novels.” will serve as a literary consultant. Winner of the Dashiell Hammet award in 2021, “Catedrales” is described as “a noir novel that shows the hypocrisy of religion and the atrocities that happen because of it.”
According to the book’s synopsis, it revolves around the mystery behind the brutal murder of 17-year-old Ana Sardá, a devout Catholic...

Circle of Confusion, the talent management and production company behind “The Walking Dead,” has joined production and finance outfit Carte Blanche and Roadmap Writers’ genre screenwriting competition.
Josh Dove at Circle is handling their side of the partnership alongside Kyle Stroud and Frank Ponce at Carte Blanche and Joey Tuccio and Dorian Connelley at Roadmap Writers.
Carte Blanche will be greenlighting and fully financing at least one genre film. The script will have no more than five characters and five locations, and will focus on a contained, character-driven story. “Timecrimes,” “Buried,” “Monsters,” “Locke,” “Another Earth” and “Oxygen” serve as artistic inspiration.
The competition’s jury consists of producer Liz Cardenas (“7 Days”), Carolina Groppa, who is the executive in charge of production at Issa Rae’s ColorCreative, Giselle Johnson of Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems and Pixar alumnus Colin Levy, who is currently developing sci-fi series “Skywatch” for Peacock. They will decide the top three scripts,...

This is cool news. Variety reported early today that Cinedigm have acquired the U.S. and Canadian rights for Cristian Ponce's horror flick, History of the Occult. They acquired the rights to the Argentine horror flick from our friends at Filmsharks who held the worldwide saleas and remake rights for the film. We reviewed Ponce's debut feature film when it played at MotelX a couple years ago. When watching History of the Occult we could not help but think back to some of the films of Mexican director Isaac Ezban... similar to Ezban, Ponce is determined to deliver a story that is not just about horrors and chills but wants to give us something to think about and still work out for ourselves after...

“History of the Occult” director Cristian Ponce, “The Trace We Leave Behind” producer André Pereira and “Huesera” producer Edher Campos all have projects at the 3rd Sanfic Morbido Lab, Sanfic’s genre/fantastic film showcase which looks packed with riches.
Also noticeable, three of the six projects are set to be directed by female genre auteurs – Argentina’s Laura Sánchez Acosta, Spain’s Marta Medina del Valle and French-Spanish screenwriter Elisa Puerto Aubel – as women create an ever larger number of the most exciting elevated genre movies coming out of Spain and Latin America.
Appropriately enough, given Sanfic takes place in Santiago de Chile, Chile accounts for two projects at the Lab, Daniel Aspillaga’s “Plasma,” a part body horror mockumentary, and Cristián Grez Donoso’s “Magic Word,” turning on an aged and crazed former amusement park actor.
The potential impact of projects is underscored by recent events. On “A Mother’s Embrace,...

"What happens when the past comes back to haunt you?" A hospital for the supernatural is the focus of The Ward, now available from Dark Horse Comics, and writer Cavan Scott is the subject of our latest Q&a!
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer questions for us, Cavan, and congratulations on your new comic book series The Ward! When did you originally come up with the idea for The Ward?
It came about maybe four or five years ago when watching medical dramas with my wife. She’s a big fan of things like ER or Code Black. In fact, Code Black was instrumental in coming up with the idea. I went back and watched the phenomenal documentary that the show was based on which have these crazy scenes when medics are having to operate on patients right in the middle of an open emergency...
