A headlining set from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on the beach in their spiritual home of Asbury Park, N.J., sounds more like a fannish fever dream than an actual festival booking. But that performance is actually happening Sept. 15, on the second night of the sixth annual Sea.Hear.Now festival. The festival, which has already hosted names as big as Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters (and will feature Noah Kahan as headliner the night before Springsteen), was founded in 2018 by famed photographer and Jersey native Danny Clinch...

Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness has opened up about his battle with tonsil cancer in a new interview.
Ness’ conversation with Matt Pinfield on Los Angeles’ 95.5 Klos comes after the punk legend shared a positive health update on Instagram about a month ago, revealing that he was finished with chemo and focused on rehabilitation. That was recently followed by Social Distortion announcing a co-headlining Spring 2024 US tour with Bad Religion, as well as a Fall 2024 run of rescheduled North American dates making up for the planned Summer 2023 tour that was originally postponed upon Ness’ diagnosis.
“Well, first of all, obviously it wasn’t in the plan,” Ness told Pinfield of his diagnosis [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “So the shock is a lot just to take in. But, yeah, the surgery — I mean, you can hear it in my voice. It’s still weak, just talking.”

Mike Ness, who revealed a diagnosis of tonsil cancer in June, posted a video to Instagram on Friday updating fans on his progress. The Social Distortion frontman underwent surgery that month as a form of treatment. “[I’m] still a little weak, but it’s getting there,” Ness says in the new video.

Social Distortion have announced a batch of 40th anniversary vinyl reissues of their 1983 debut album, Mommy’s Little Monster, arriving November 10th via Craft Recordings.
The same label handled a 2019 reissue of Mommy’s Little Monster, though the new 40th anniversary reissue campaign will return the album to print in a smattering of color variants: black, white, ruby red, silver, clear smoke, and black and white marble.
The latest reissue also features newly remastered audio sourced from the original analog tapes, presenting the album in Aaa (all-analog) fidelity, per Craft Recordings’ typical boutique approach.
Mommy’s Little Monster captured the humble beginnings for Mike Ness and company, who would go on to become one of the most celebrated punk acts of the 1990s and beyond. Before that, the band was a pioneering force in Orange County’s legendary hardcore scene.

Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness has been diagnosed with stage-one tonsil cancer and is currently recovering from surgery. As a result, Social Distortion has postponed its upcoming summer tour and halted the recording of its eighth studio album.
“In the midst of pre-production, I was diagnosed with stage one tonsil cancer,” Ness said in a statement released on Wednesday. “I was feeling well enough to continue with recording in the studio up until the very day before surgery. The band and I were so inspired and excited to lay down these tracks, which by the way sound f-ing Awesome!”
“The recovery from surgery is a day-by-day process and in three weeks we start radiation and that should be the last therapy I need,” Ness explained. “The team of doctors are certain that once finished with this course, I will be able to start the healing and recovery process. We expect...

When surfing launches as an Olympic sport in Tokyo next summer, don’t be surprised if Conner Coffin is among those going for the gold. Mastering his style in the point breaks of his home area of Santa Barbara, California, Coffin has picked up where local surf legends like Bobby Martinez and Dane Reynolds left off, and his straight-on, confident style has made him one of the world’s top-rated athletes. Last year, he was the highest-ranking American surfer in the men’s division.

Sacramento police are investigating an incident last month during which Mike Ness, the lead singer of the band Social Distortion, allegedly punched a Trump-supporting fan at a concert.
In an interview with Sacramento’s CBS13 that aired on Wednesday, Tim Hildebrand, 30, said he held up his middle fingers during a July 19 concert in response to Ness’ rant against President Trump. He said Ness then called him forward and repeatedly punched him in the head.
Hildebrand, who filed a report with the police, said he also shouted, “I paid for your music, not your politics” during the concert. Although a longtime fan of Social Distortion, Hildebrand said Ness’ speech was “anti-American” and “anti-Trump,” and that others at the concert also protested the singer or walked out.
A video of the event surfaced earlier this month, in which Ness can be seen yelling at someone in the crowd. Hildebrand said he suffered two black eyes,...

The self-titled Ep by EdTang & The Chops isn’t dissimilar from their previous release, which had one of the most absurd names ever, Goodbye, Zen5, Sushi Dinner. That album was just fantastic, but this time around, the guys seem to have an even more folksy sound going on. If you’re into grungy-sounding folk-rock, you’re in luck.
“When Death Should Find Us” is a strong single, with lead singer EdTang’s gritty vocals driving it. I could listen to this guy every night, honestly. I can’t imagine a better voice for my generation than EdTang. He’s got soul, but more importantly, he’s got that grit that reminds me of Mike Ness without the obnoxiousness. He’s smoother than Ness, in fact. “When Death Should Find Us” has a kind-of Rembrandts meets Blues Traveler quality to it, which I like a lot.

Los Angeles – Any music fan who has visited Los Angeles over the holidays must be familiar with the ambiguously-titled “Almost Acoustic Christmas,” the annual two-night concert hosted by alternative rock station Kroq. Now in its 22nd installment, Almost Acoustic Christmas has become synonymous with the biggest bands gathering at the Gibson Amphitheater to celebrate the holidays in a very un-acoustic manner. Night one’s lineup this year, however, was particularly special – it featured seven (out of eight) artists who have previously played the festival, namely headliners Blink 182, 311, Sublime with Rome, Social Distortion, Bush, New Found Glory and Chevelle.
Night one started off with a little bit of nostalgia, as New Found Glory took a moment to reminisce about the last time they performed with Blink on the 2001 "Take of Your Pants and Jacket Tour." By music industry standards, ten years is ancient history.

Now that Social Distortion has settled on a steady schedule of releasing an album every seven or eight years, it’s easier to chart how much Mike Ness progresses as a songwriter from record to record. Or not. Progress isn’t really Ness’ department; Since performing a shit-kicking overhaul of punk starting with 1983’s Mommy’s Little Monster, Social D has tapped ever deeper into its Americana roots while giving Ness plenty of grease for his gruff, rough-and-tumble confessionals. Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes, the band’s seventh album, doesn’t poison that well—but it comes close to ...

Bruce Springsteen wowed music fans at a tiny New Jersey club on Saturday, July 24 when he hit the stage with singer/songwriter Alejandro Escovedo for a trio of tunes. The rock legend was an unannounced guest at the Stone Pony and thrilled Escovedo's fans when he walked out to join his pal.
The duo performed Escovedo's "Always a Friend", a cover of The Rolling Stones' "Beast of Burden" and a new song, titled "Faith", according to Rolling Stone. It was Springsteen's first non-charity show performance at the fabled Asbury Park venue since he performed at a Mike Ness concert in May 2008.
Bruce Springsteen has released 16 studio albums. His latest album, called "Working on a Dream", was outed in the U.S. on January 27, 2009. The record has sold over 3 million copies worldwide.

Bettie Page, patron saint of hipster doofus bars from Greenpoint to Los Feliz with lots of Mike Ness on the jukebox, has left this mortal coil. She was totally hot back in the day and was our culture’s window into freaky S&M. She singlehandedly made bangs look sexy and leopard print lingerie a turn-on. Rene Rosa, Comics Editor of Ugo, tells me that Poison Ivy was based off of her and that is totally awesome. From sources as reliable as that movie I didn’t see and Wikipedia, I’m told she became a missionary when she started to become less hot and even worked with Billy Graham. Not the one who put on Jefferson Airplane concerts, the one who would hang out with Nixon and talk crap about Jews. Anyway, she’s a hero to a lot of people, so we salute her and offer solace to her friends and family.
