Colombo, June 9 (Ians) Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews has been left out while young pacer Matheesha Pathirana has been included in Sri Lanka’s 15-man squad for their Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier, set to be held in Zimbabwe from June 18-July 9, said Sri Lanka Cricket (Slc) on Friday.
Mathews, the former skipper, scored 12 runs from 21 balls as Sri Lanka lost to Afghanistan by six wickets in the first of the recently-concluded three-match series at Hambantota. He was subsequently dropped from the next two matches, which were won by the hosts.
Pathirana took 19 wickets in the recent season of the Indian Premier League (Ipl), helping Chennai Super Kings to win their fifth title. The 20-year-old, whose slingy action resembles pace bowling great Lasith Malinga, made his Odi debut earlier this month against Afghanistan.

Mumbai, May 8 (Ians) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes Rohit Sharma’s challenges as skipper of five-time Ipl winners Mumbai Indians “have doubled” in the few years, citing the change in personnel in the team.
The addition of two new teams ahead of Ipl 2022 meant Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya went to Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants respectively, while Lasith Malinga and Kieron Pollard called time on their Ipl playing careers.
Mumbai’s issues also increased with Jofra Archer unavailable in Ipl 2022 due to long run with injuries and is still finding his rhythm in Ipl 2023, with Jasprit Bumrah ruled out this year due to long-standing back injury.
“The resources that you had two or three years ago isn’t quite the same. The challenges as a captain might have doubled for him. The work as a captain would have doubled as opposed to two years ago when everything was nice,...

Tendulkar won the World Cup, innumerable Man of the Match and Series awards, scored the first-ever Odi double ton, made the highest number of centuries, the highest number of runs, most caps for the country… he did it all but his critics, which are very less in numbers, also keep reminding fans about his failures on big days.
No doubt, Sachin carried the burden of pressure and expectations of Indian cricket fans throughout his career but he also failed on a few days, when the country wanted him to lead from the front with the bat and win it for Team India.
One such day was March 23, 2003, when India played an intimidating Australia in the Icc World Cup Final in Johannesburg. The Sourav Ganguly-led Indian cricket team was on a roll in that World Cup in South Africa, where they reached the final with just one defeat in the tournament.

Colombo, Oct 12 (Ians) Legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene has said he sees all the qualities of a leader in young allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who has made the cricket world take notice of his talent through his performances in the 2021 Icc T20 World Cup in the UAE and the recently-concluded Asia Cup.
Hasaranga surprised one and all in the 2021 T20 World Cup by picking up 16 wickets to finish as the top wicket-taker in the event. He carried that form into the new year, playing a key role in the island nation’s success in the Asia Cup in the UAE.
The 25-year-old was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with nine scalps and also chipped in with 66 runs, including 36 and 3/27 in the final against Pakistan and guiding the side to the title in the UAE. Jayawardene also drew parallels between Hasaranga meteoric rise and that of Sri Lanka pace great Lasith Malinga.

Dubai, Aug 21 (Ians) Pakistan will have a host of options to choose from to replace Shaheen Shah Afridi, who was ruled out of the Asia Cup T20 tournament, scheduled to commence in the UAE on August 27, due to a knee injury, with proven performers Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza as the leading contenders.
Pakistan suffered a huge blow on Saturday when Afridi was ruled out of the showpiece continental tournament due to the injury he picked up while fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. The tall pacer is expected to return to complete fitness in time for the T20 World Cup in Australia in October.

Antigua, March 4 (Ians) Kieron Pollard smashed six sixes in an over off Sri Lanka's Akila Dananjaya, who had picked a hat-trick only in the previous over, as West Indies won the first T20I by four wickets at the Coolidge Cricket Ground on Thursday. Chasing a target of 132, Pollard's rampage in the sixth over helped the West Indies reach 134/6 in 13.1 overs.
West Indies had earlier done well to restrict Sri Lanka to 131/9. However, Dananjaya's hat-trick in the fourth over made the visitors favourites to win the match despite the low total. Dananjaya is the third Sri Lankan to pick up a hat-trick after Thisara Perera and Lasith Malinga.
However, Sri Lanka's joy was shortlived as West Indies captain Kieron Pollard became the second after India's Yuvraj Singh to hit six sixes in an over in T20 Internationals off the very next over that Dananjaya bowled.

Chennai, Feb 17 (Ians) The Indian Premier League (Ipl) mini-auction on Thursday could see a huge demand for bowlers even as Australian batsmen Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Glenn Maxwell, England's Dawid Malan, all-rounders Chris Morris of South Africa and Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan could be the hottest properties.
Smith, the Australian batting mainstay was released by Rajasthan Royals recently after he failed to put up big scores for them. He may, however, find interest from Punjab Kings (Pk), Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr), or Chennai Super Kings (Csk), who all are looking to strengthen their batting.
Labuschagne could also evince interest from the three franchises, especially from Kkr or Csk.
Pk have a heavy purse left with Rs.53.2 crore and they could go in for Smith (base price: Rs 2 crore) or Labuschagne (Rs.1 crore) or both.

"He's (Bumrah) a world-class cricketer. He has been number one in a couple of formats for a long period of time. Priyanka Chopra Jonas may have matched the 'Camp: Notes on Fashion' theme at the Met Gala, but the actress' shimmery avatar with an exaggerated hairdo didn't impress social media users who had a field day trolling her for picking the brave look.
The theme for this year's Met Gala is 'Camp: Notes on Fashion'. It is inspired by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay "Notes on Camp". In her essay, Susan had explained: "The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration."
As per this, Priyanka got the look "spot on", said designer Wendell Rodricks.
Priyanka brought whimsy and animation to the pink carpet with a vibrant, yet unique Dior gown at the event which is an annual fundraiser held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
She went bold and played up the theme with a zany look in a silver gown with colourful ruffled feathers, a very high leg split,...
