Stephen Chow was the closest Hong Kong Comedy ever had to an international star. Breaking out with “Shaolin Soccer” and “Kung Fu Hustle” he suddenly stepped back to focus on direction. Prior to this was a huge back catalogue of his work that apart from sporadic releases was hardly seen in the west. Eureka Entertainment start to rectify that with the upcoming release of “From Beijing with Love” his Bond Spoof from 1994. Comedy however can be a very acquired taste and what makes them roar in Kowloon may not necessarily do so in Kansas. So time to take a trip back to the nineties and experience Stephen Chow in his prime.

Swathes of dark hair fall over her narrow shoulders, as her friend snips with a pair of scissors in small quick strokes. The haircut is blunt without texturizing or thinning out, but that’s enough to make her look like a boy with that medium length comb-over. She puts on different boyish styling clothes, but feels like the brown checked shirt buttoned to the neck suits her the most. Now, she’s a man.
Starring Leslie Cheung, Anita Yuen and Carina Lau, the 1994 Hong Kong romantic comedy film ‘He’s a Woman, She’s a Man’ already explains much in the title itself. Co-written and directed by the high-profile filmmaker Peter Chan, the movie reveals the possibility of ambivalent sexuality and gender confusion. Awards including Best Actress at the 14th Hong Kong Film Awards for Anita Yuen and Best Original Song for ‘Chase’ by...

It is the boy-meets-girl love story that has been around for centuries, but where both the male and female leads are hired killers. This is the premise of one of the early films by one of the biggest stars of Hong Kong, Andy Lau, “A Taste of Killing and Romance” – a film that delivers on its two title promises in equal measure.
The boy is Ko Sao (Lau), a renowned hitman but wistful and thoughtful in his nature. He understands that death is always close, so much so he had already had his own tombstone made. It is obvious he is longing for something more fulfilling in his life: after he receives his first payment for killing, he remarks “Money is only one of my needs”. We then meet the girl, Yu-Feng (Anita Yuen). On first impression, she seems unassuming enough but that image...

Alan Mak is a Hong Kong helmer whose legacy exceeds the boundaries of national cinema. The reason is quite simple and part of common knowledge: “Infernal Affairs” trilogy that has spread the influence of the contemporary Hong Kong genre cinema to the whole world. Mak was not the only person responsible for it since he collaborated with Felix Chong, with whom he also did another trilogy, “Overheard”. On his own, Mak has envisioned yet another crime thriller trilogy named Integrity, which is tonally different from his previous work. After a smart and out of the box theatrical release last year for the Chinese New Year (the slot is usually reserved for featherweight comedies and dramas) that resulted in decent earnings on the box office, “Integrity” is now available on video.

Prolific director Herman Yau’s contribution to this year’s Lunar New Year releases, “A Home With a View”, is an adaptation of a stage play by comedian Cheung Tat-ming. In the best of the Lunar New Year traditions, “A Home With a View” is about family and getting together but maybe not in the way you would expect.
“Home With a View” screened at Udine Far East Film Festival
The Lo family is a typical Hong Kong family, in a lively and crowded neighborhood. The father Wai-man (Francis Ng) has spent all the money he could possibly put together, including the pension of his own disabled father (Cheung Tat-ming) to buy a flat with a 20-year mortgage in a noisy tower block. As anybody living in cities knows, buying a flat is a big achievement but life doesn’t get any easy after the purchase; possibly even worst! The...

Swapping gun with a huge butcher knife, Stephen Chow debuts as a director and together with Lee Lik-Chi, they bring us this Chinese version of “Get Smart” and a spoof of James Bond movies in which they mix laughs and violence to great effect.
In China, a dinosaur skull is stolen, leading to a dumb, incompetent, but a charming secret agent sent to Hong Kong to investigate and retrieve it. A female spy who is supposed to help him is in fact a double-agent ordered by their government to have him killed.
As this is a send- up of James Bond films, Stephen Chow is the secret agent Ling Ling Chat, which sounds very much like 007 but it’s loosely translated as ‘drenching in paint’ as written in Chinese. The film starts off with some John Woo style of gun-fu action in a warehouse where a secret...

In postwar Hong Kong, Ip Man is reluctantly called into action once more, when what begins as simple challenges from rival kung fu schools, leads to him becoming face to face with the dangerous underworld of the Triads. To defend himself and those he cares about, Ip Man must stand and fight one last time. This masterful biopic proves essential viewing for anyone familiar to the Ip Man saga, encasing sensational action sequences within a compelling drama.
Ip Man: The Final Fight comes from director Herman Yau, who previously helmed Ip Man: The Legend Is Born, the prequel film released inbetween Ip Man 2 and 3. And like Yau’s previous Ip Man movie, this sequel, which follows on from the...

Ip Man: Final Fight is the latest movie in production, but this is not part of the Donnie yen series, yet another spin off from the success of the movies like Ip Man – Legend Is Born.
The three leading actors in the movie are Anthony Wong, Gillian Chung and Jordan Chan, all which have studied Wing Chun before the filming of the movie. Anthony Wong will play an older version of Ip Man whilst Gillian Chung and Jordan Chan will play Yip’s students. The cast also includes Anita Yuen, Eric Tsang and Timmy Hung.
Also out this year is the movie Grand Masters, another movie based on the legend of Ip Man, which will star Tony Leung and of course Ip Man 3 – 3D, as Donnie Yen steps back in to play probably the biggest part in his career.
The movie will probably be released sometime in 2013.

“72 Tenants of Prosperity” is the second big screen joint production from Shaw Brothers and Tvb, and is essentially an updating of the 1973 Shaw hit “House of 72 Tenants”, released domestically as a Lunar New Year comedy. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the film’s big draw is its stellar and massive cast of Hong Kong stars and personalities, quite incredibly managing to pack in over 100 talents from the Tvb roster and beyond, with many famous faces putting in cameo appearances as themselves. Directed by Eric Tsang and Patrick Kong, the film is a local production in the truest sense of the word, showing a very Hong Kong sense of humour and dealing with a variety of classic and contemporary themes. The plot basically revolves around two families in Mongkok, headed by Kung (Eric Tsang) and Kin’s (Jacky Cheung), whose rivalry stretches back through the decades since Hong (Anita Yuen), the neighbourhood beauty they were both in love with,...
