Will Smith and his production company, Overbrook Entertainment, have struck a deal with Sony Pictures to produce the high school comedy “Ultra”. According to sources, the actual premise of the film project is being “kept under wraps” except to say that it will be a “R-rated event movie starring teenagers”. The film will be produced by Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith and James Lassiter for Overbrook, with Sandy Stern of Single Cell Pictures. The film will be written by Hollywood wunderkind twin brothers Shea Mirzai and his brother Evan, who, for the last three years in a row, have had a script on the prestigious “Black List” of the best unproduced screenplays. Black List alums Shea Mirzai and Evan Mirzai have been hired to write the high school comedy “Ultra” for Sony Pictures and Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment, TheWrap has learned. Plot details are being kept under wraps but the project is described as an R-rated event movie starring teenagers. The idea was hatched internally at Overbrook before the Mirzai twins pitched Caleeb Pinkett during production of Sony’s football drama “Concussion,” who bought it then and there. Will Smith, James Lassiter and Pinkett will produce for Overbrook along with Sandy Stern, who runs R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe’s company Single Cell Pictures.

It’s taken, oh, about a century for the true rise of women directors to take hold, and it’s not about to stop. Deadline reports that choreographer-turned-director Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, Step Up) is set to direct Alone for the Holidays, based on an original script by SNL head writer Seth Meyers for Fox 2000.
There are no plot or casting details just yet, but word is the script is set in New York, with production to begin this fall for a release around the 2013 holiday season. Real Steel director Shawn Levy‘s 21 Laps Entertainment will produce, along with Michael Stipe and Sandy Stern’s Single Cell Pictures, and James Franco’s Rabbit Bandini Productions. Fletcher‘s The Proposal, which starred Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, was a surprise hit, grossing over $160 million domestically on a $40 million budget… and it wasn’t half bad. She’s definitely in a position to call her own shots,...

Looks like he's finally made it! Barry Manilow will soon write the songs that make the cinematic world sing.* Oh, yes. Variety reports that Michael Stipe and Sandy Stern of Single Cell are joining Playtone's Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman to create a romantic comedy focusing on Manilow's extensive song catalog.
But we're not talking about some Mamma Mia! sort of flick where famous folks get together and try to belt out songs like they're Abba. Why get some stand-ins when you can get the real thing? The film will be a character-driven smorgasbord of Manilow fans heading to Las Vegas to see the icon headline Mandalay Bay. His music will drive the piece, and there will even be a performance or two by the man himself.
Could it be magic? Darn tootin'. They say this will be in the vein of Love Actually, and I hope they make a...

I usually expect a strong whiff of subversion when a project is announced by Michael Stipe and Sandy Stern's Single Cell production arm, so forgive me for waiting for the punchline on this little bit of news: The duo has announced that they'll be making an ensemble romantic comedy that utilizes the entire songbook of Barry Manilow, and that "the idea for the film is [close] in tone to Love Actually." But...one of the characters is a serial killer, right? Right? [Variety]...

Single Cell and Playtone have confirmed plans for a movie based around the music of Barry Manilow. According to Variety, the film will be a romantic comedy in the style of Love Actually rather than Playtone's recent hit musical Mamma Mia!. Manilow's manager Garry Kief, Single Cell's Sandy Stern and Michael Stipe, and Playtone's Gary Goetzman and Tom Hanks are producing the film, which is the first big screen project to have full access to the popular American songwriter's music. - We got a morsel of him in another Killer Films’ project in Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There (David Cross played a bearded version of the written word maverick), and the upcoming release of Howl will showcase James Franco in the big shoes of the great Allen Ginsberg. Is the beatnik culture making a big screen comeback? Apparently so. Variety reports that Christine Vachon has nabbed what appears to be not only a biopic but also works as a thriller spec script by John Krokidas and Austin Bunn. Krokidas who is tapped to make his directorial debut with Slo-Mo (a Sandy Stern and Michael Stipe's Single Cell Pictures project - the production company that participated on Velvet Goldmine and Being John Malkovich). Not to be confused with the terrible, same-titled Swedish U.S-set road movie from a couple of years back, Kill Your Darlings will showcase the founding members of Allen Ginsberg,
