The Pastor and the Master: Stevens Enjoyably Re-Vamps Domestic Distress in Grisly Black Comedy
Behind every man is a diminished woman, or so goes the underlying takeaway of Jakob’s Wife, the sophomore effort from director Travis Stephens, reuniting cult genre stalwarts Barbara Crampton and Larry Fessenden (both who appeared in 2015’s We Are Still Here). Crampton, well known to cinephiles as the muse of Stuart Gordon (who passed away in 2020), from his 1980s classics like Reanimator (1985) and From Beyond (1986), also starred in his 1995 television production Castle Freak, remade last year and penned by Kathy Charles, who serves as screenwriter (alongside Stevens and Mark Steensland) this time around.…...

Last month, Jakob’s Wife celebrated its world premiere at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival, and to mark the occasion, we shared the first part of our interview with the film’s star, Barbara Crampton (you can read it Here). And now that the film is set to debut at limited theaters and on digital platforms this Friday, April 16th, we have the second part of our interview with Crampton to share with you, where the legendary actress discusses the real-world inspirations behind the onscreen relationship she shares with Jakob’s Wife co-star Larry Fessenden and how she worked out the various beats for her character Anne, who undergoes a very bloodthirsty transformation throughout the film.

The opening scene of Jakob’s Wife sets the stage for what’s to come as Reverend Jakob Fedder (Larry Fessenden) sermonizes about the love a husband should have for his wife. His partner Anne (Barbara Crampton) is in the front pew listening, but never smiling. She’s not hearing his words and nodding her head in agreement. She’s actually staring daggers at the reality of what his words mean. Because Jakob never says anything about that love being for her benefit. He never says men should love their wives because they deserve respect or equality or even that very love he believes he provides. No. To love your wife is to “love yourself.” Even in what should be a selfless act, this man (and those listening) thinks only of himself.
How does director Travis Stevens and co-writers Mark Steensland and Kathy Charles bring that “love” to life? By...

While I don’t expect everyone to feel the way that I did about Jakob’s Wife, the film quickly won me over in the quieter moments of its opening scene as we watch on as the lovely Anne Fedder (Barbara Crampton) is talked over by her minister husband Jakob (Larry Fessenden) after a Sunday service, and we see her slowly slip away from the scene, almost becoming a quiet observer in that moment. It was during that sequence where I felt immediately bonded to Crampton’s Anne, because years ago in another life, I was her. I found my own identity subtly slipping away in my marriage, and I realized at a certain point that I had to decide just who exactly it was that I wanted to be, and where I wanted my life to be heading towards. But becoming a vampire wasn’t one of my options,...

Low-budget necessity is often the mother of low-budget invention, but sadly not so much in Travis Stevens’ “Jakob’s Wife,” a thin, half-hearted reworking of the vampire mythos that can’t quite decide if it’s spoofy or serious, and doesn’t have the smarts to be both. While it’s theoretically promising to attempt a hybrid tone in which schlocky effects and spurting necks are offset by genuine psychological insight into the discontented life of a long-married small-town pastor’s wife, in practice, the impulses just cancel each other out, whittling down the movie’s stakes long before they’re plunged into anyone’s chest.
You can see, however, how the project might have attracted its chief draw, who is also ultimately its most underserved asset. Actress Barbara Crampton (who also produces) has been a horror icon since starring in 1985’s beloved cult horror-comedy “Re-Animator” and returned to the big...

Easily one of the wildest and darkly funny stories I’ve read throughout all of 2018 is The Special, from co-writers James Newman and Mark Steensland. A cautionary tale about “too much of a good thing” that morphs into an oozing and cringe-worthy story of body horror, The Special is not only celebrating its recent release, but the story has also been nabbed by filmmaker Harrison Smith for his next feature to boot.
I recently had the opportunity to catch up with both Steensland and Newman, asked them about coming up with the story of The Special, some of their influences and their experiences working together, and what’s next for them as well. And for those of you who are into genre-bending stories that beautifully blend humor and horror, you can purchase The Special on Amazon Here.

Filmmaker Mark Steensland has been in our newsfeed quite a bit recently. Between the world premiere of his short film The Weeping Woman this weekend at Motor City Nightmares and the news that he had just acquired the rights to the novel Tengu, we thought it was time to talk to the man himself and find out more about his projects.

Mark Steensland: Yes. It’s all good. We have a lot of irons in the fire right now, but that’s a requirement these days because the wheels in the film business tend to turn slowly.

Filmmaker Mark Steensland is certainly on a roll. Fresh on the heels of his short film The Weeping Woman hitting the festival circuit this spring comes word that Steensland and screenwriter Rick Hautala have acquired the screen rights to Graham Masterton’s novel Tengu via their Chang Shao Trading Company shingle.
From the original novel's synopsis:
In Japanese mythology Tengu is the most terrible of all demons, a living force of evil that infects its followers with the mad strength of the berserk and the capacity to survive attack from any weapon. At the close of World War II the Tengu was Japan's most terrifying secret weapon. Now the demon is unleashed again, this time in a diabolical plot to wreak vengeance on America for the mega destruction of Hiroshima. A terrifying novel of nuclear revenge.
No word yet on how Steensland and Hautala plan to approach the story or any other details yet.

Like most horror fans, we can be pretty cynical when it comes to our genre. We have to wade through a lot of swill to find the gems. But what I've seen come out about The Weeping Woman is leaving me with a lot of hope about newcomer Mark Steensland and his short, which stars Stephen "Evil Ed" Geoffreys (Fright Night) and DC alum Melisa Bostaph.
The teaser packs a lot of atmosphere without featuring a single frame of film, thanks to the incredible score from Fabio Frizzi (City of the Living Dead, Zombie, The Beyond), making a triumphant return to horror. Obviously, with a short weighing in at 7 mins, you can't show much without giving away the goods.
If you're a big fan of short films, especially horror, you should be really looking forward to checking this one out.

On April 16th, 2011, Motor City Nightmares Film Festival will be the scene for the world premiere of the latest short film by award-winning director Mark Steensland, based on a short story by Paul Kane (The Hellraiser Films and Their Legacy and Hellbound Hearts). Kane was also the writer of Dead Time, adapted into one of the better episodes of NBC's short-lived series "Fear Itself" (New Years Day).

Personally, I think think the combo of Stephen "Evil Ed" Geoffreys (Fright Night) and music by composer Fabio Frizzi (City of the Living Dead, Zombie, The Beyond) is more than enough for any horror fan to invest their time in the 7-minute short.
Even the most A.D.D.-riddled horror fans.
Speaking of Frizzi, you can find the soundtrack for this film on iTunes.

“Working with Fabio Frizzi is a dream come true,” Steensland said. “I’ve always thought his music was the best thing about [director Lucio] Fulci’s movies, and I knew his style would be a perfect match for this film.”

One filmmaker we've had our eye on for a while is Mark Steensland. The man's made some truly tremendous short films including the critically acclaimed The Ugly File, and now he's back with a new short-form fright fest along with Evil Ed himself!
From the Press Releaae
Award-winning director Mark Steensland has wrapped principal photography on his latest short film, “The Weeping Woman.”
Tony Award nominee Stephen Geoffreys (Fright Night, 976-Evil) stars in the film based on a short story by acclaimed British horror author Paul Kane (The Hellraiser Films and Their Legacy).
Shot in the empty, quiet woods of northwestern Pennsylvania, “The Weeping Woman” shows what can happen when you take a shortcut on a long drive home.
Steensland is no stranger to horror, having won first prize at two separate film festivals for his previous shorts, “The Ugly File” and “Peekers.” Steensland says this short is different because of Geoffreys.

The teasing is over! This here is the real deal. The moment we wait all year for: The lineup for the powerful, the mighty Boston Underground Film Festival, which is set to run March 25 to April 1. Now in its 12th year, Buff shows no sign of slowing down or taking it easy. In fact, this might be their most demented and transgressive edition yet.
There are homages to Giallo horror, tributes to the grand grindhouse tradition of sleaze and exploitation, sex and violence galore — both separately and together — plus, a resurrected ’80s slasher classic that all combine into an epic celebration of everything that is vicious and twisted in this world. But, in a fun way, ya know.
Alas, I haven’t seen any of the feature films that are playing this year, so I can’t offer any special recommendations of those. Although, there are many (most) that I...

Badass producer-director Mark Steensland and screenwriter Rick Hautala have acquired the screen rights to James Newman’s forthcoming novel Animosity via their newly formed Chang Shao Trading Company shingle, and we've got the first heads-up on what to expect.

Last year short film director Mark Steensland unleashed his horror short "Peekers" on fans, and this year his newest project, "The Ugly File", is set for not only its world premiere but also its Us debut during the Shocklines Short Film Series event later this month.
First up, "The Ugly File" is heading to the land Down Under for A Night of Horror Fest in Sydney, Australia on March 27th. Then, the very next night Steensland’s newest project will be playing as part of Shocklines in New York City at 200 Hudson Street.
"The Ugly File" is based on the Ed Gorman short story and follows a photographer who mysteriously photographs hideously deformed children.
Based on what Steensland did in "Peekers", I have a feeling that "The Ugly File" will be one twisted little treat.

The fiends over at Fangoria just posted a huge list of upcoming films and events going down at the Two Boots Pioneer Theater in NYC, this in addition to all the good stuff we told you about here, and one of the films making its East Coast debut is David Gregory’s Plague Town.
You may not recall much about Plague Town since we've not mentioned it in a long while, but this is the debut film for both Dark Sky Films and Gregory, who got his start making supplemental features for Dark Sky. The story follows a family hoping to get in touch with their Irish roots, who stumble upon a village in their native land full of deformed, homicidal children and the parents who love them.
Two Boots will host the NYC premiere of Plague Town on Friday, October 10th, at 10Pm, which really sucks because I’m...

The Gospel According to Philip K. Dick
It says something about how rarefied the world of science fiction is that this documentary about Philip K. Dick, one of the genre's most important authors, contains little or no biographical information, no commentary about his more notable literary works, no clips from the films that have been adapted from his stories ("Blade Runner", "Total Recall", the upcoming "Minority Report", etc.), not even a photograph of the man. The filmmakers, as if channeling Dick's theories about mystical thought transference, seem to feel that we either know everything there is to know about the subject, or that those who do not won't even bother to see this film.
It's an unfortunate mistake, because Dick's unconventional life and career and his often brilliant work deserve better treatment and more comprehensiveness than they receive here. Shot on video and composed largely of unilluminating interviews with various friends and associates, the documentary is a crudely made and uninformative exercise that will baffle the uninitiated and probably not satisfy even the obsessives.
The author, who died in 1982, produced more than 50 novels and numerous short stories, many of which deal with the themes of identity and the illusionary nature of reality. He also wrote an 8,000-page thesis detailing a religious epiphany he experienced that led him to believe, among other things, that he was living parallel existences and that his works were channeled directly from God. The fact that he also took massive amounts of drugs throughout his life may or may not have been a coincidence.
The only direct contact with Dick that the film provides is in the form of a series of audio excerpts from a 1975 interview he did for Rolling Stone. Featuring barely intelligible sound and illustrated with a crude animated rendering of Dick, they are uninformative but at least remind us that the author was more than just a mythical figure.
