New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features selections reflecting the month of April 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include telepathic plants, ecological horrors, and a lot of killer cats.
The Uncanny (1977)
Pictured: The Uncanny (1977)
Directed by Denis Héroux.
The Uncanny is a two-for kind of deal: it works for both National Pet Day (April 11) and Tell a Story Day (April 27). Here we have Peter Cushing‘s character talking at length about the evils of cats, with his three examples fleshing out this singular anthology. And while this film is often mistaken for an Amicus production, it was, in fact, made by The Rank Organisation. However, Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky was also a co-producer.

Following the massive success of The Blair Witch Project, production company Haxan Films kept the found-footage train going with FreakyLinks (originally titled Fearsum). While not everyone recognizes this hidden horror gem of television, those who do might recall its harrowing history. Considered by many to be ahead of its time, FreakyLinks is an entertaining time-capsule of what it was like to be on the weirder side of the internet before the turn of the 21st century.
Prior to its TV debut, FreakyLinks’ developers launched a paranormal-sleuthing website similar to the homespun one seen in the show. Sadly, the internet marketing did not pay off; shortly after premiering on Fox in October of 2000, the series was temporarily taken off the schedule due to low ratings. The network aired more new episodes that following January, yet once again, Fox pulled the plug. After the remaining episodes were burned off in June of...

Oh, the internet. It was the best of times and now possibly the worst of times, but the best times– oh were they something. No, it’s not Ghostwriter. No, it’s not Hackers. Time to hang up that phone and get into some Freakylinks.
In 1999, The Blair Witch Project came out of nowhere and brought Horror into a new realm. Welcome to the internet – when there was still some sort of whimsy and anonymity. A time when a small group of college students could go and make an amateur documentary and make people feel like they had actually disappeared. What a wonderful time it was. The movie was an instant sensation. So what do you do when...

The British are known for keeping a “stiff upper lip,” and Queen Elizabeth II was no exception. But those who were close to the queen knew that she had a great sense of humour underneath her serene and stoic public image.
Throughout her long life, there have been many times when she let down her guard, so to speak, whether that be delighting at animals or cracking jokes with world leaders.
In honour of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and Canada’s longest-serving head of state, we remember some of the sweetest and funniest moments in the extraordinary life of Queen Elizabeth II.

Ecological horror is a genre that is not often tapped for terror these days, though it was – at one time – a staple of the horror genre, with films like Frogs, The Bees, Day of the Triffids, Them! and a myriad of spider-based movies asking “what if?” questions that captured the imagination of audiences for years.

full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by distributor October Coast. Director/writer: James Ojala. Cast: Tiffany Shepis, Stephen Tobolowsky, Lisa Sheridan, John Hennigan and Bruce Bohne. Strange Nature is an eco-horror or bio-thriller film. This title was developed by first time feature film director and make-up effects guru James Ojala. This title features: Tiffany Shepis (Victor Crowley), Lisa Sheridan ("CSI: Miami"), Bruce Bohne and a few others. Fans of Shepis will be disappointed as she appears in only a couple of scenes. However, Strange Nature does bring a lot of interesting characters to the screen, including former pop star and protagonist Kim Sweet (Sheridan). A micro-budget feature, much of the production value is put into the many deformed creatures on-screen. As well, Strange Nature offers a few comedic bits, before moving into more horrifying territory. This film offers both light and dark tones as one town struggles to.

The backdrop to American Horror Story season 6, our Us chums look at the lost colony of Roanoke, its myths and pop culture appearances...
In case you missed it, the American Horror Story season 6 theme has been revealed, and it is a bloody Roanoke Nightmare indeed. After promoting the new season without releasing a single frame of footage, the ever-cryptic Ryan Murphy has now unveiled his true crime satire-meets-American Gothic to a surprised public, leading many to wonder… what is Roanoke again?
Despite a misconception in some quarters that the name infamously tied to the words “Lost Colony” was made up for the series, and that this fictional ghost story was set in Virginia (Roanoke is in present day North Carolina), Roanoke is indeed a real place, and the ghost stories around it are every bit as strange—if not stranger—than anything American Horror Story has dreamed up.

Ducky (David McCallum) asks everyone to spend Thanksgiving with him, but they all have plans. Tony's attending a poker tournament. Ziva (Cote de Pablo) asks after Ducky's mother and comments she hardly recognizes Ducky these days. Gibbs (Mark Harmon) tells them of the Db in the cornfield and Ducky gives him his invite. Gibbs returns the favour; an invite to a cornfield. Tony talks about maize, which is the Indian word for corn. Ziva corrects him the Indian word for corn is "makki." Fans of romantic movies, such as the recent Dear John (which bounced Avatar from its top slot at the box office last month), are likely no stranger to the Lifetime and Hallmark networks, which excel in creating made-for-tv movies about people falling in love through a variety of improbable circumstances. However, Hallmark's latest, Healing Hands, seems to be what is known as a "curveball" and appears influenced by the current comic book movie trend.
The movie follows a janitor (TV-movie veteran Eddie Cibrian) who learns he has the power to heal others, only that power is slowly killing him. Don't worry, this is a Hallmark movie, so we think everything will work out, but that doesn't mean a certain type of movie fan — and you know who you are — won't delight in this latest trailer for Healing Hands, which premieres March 20 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt, 8 p.m. Ct. Let's face it 2009 was not such a great year for movies – at least mainstream releases anyway. There were so many films that promised to tease, tantalize or entertain us with their fancy looking trailers and the end results where less than stellar. Genre films appear to be the biggest draws at the box office with stories that focus on battles between good and evil. Represented by one or several antagonists or villains, evil within a story can often be more fascinating than good. A good villain has the power to outshine the hero with his intelligence, quick wit or twisted philosophy. Unfortunately there also seems to be an equal number of terrible villains in films. They say a film is only as good as its villain and a poorly developed villain can also ruin a picture. Sometimes it's due to bad writing, other times it is the fault of the actor.

"CSI: Miami" star Eddie Cibrian is starring in a new Hallmark Channel HD Original Movie. "Healing Hands" tells the story of a janitor who has the gift of healing, but is forced to choose about what is important in life.
"The script came to me and I thought it was just a great story," says Cibrian of "Healing Hands." "I play a guy from a small town who was raised by foster parents, a janitor at a local high school. He's a goodhearted guy with a loving girlfriend who finds out he has this unique gift to heal people." "Here is a guy who has been kind of walking through life barely noticed by people. And now he's saddled with this great ability, responsibility, and sudden visibility. The sad part is, every time he helps somebody, it takes a little piece of him away and drains his energy. A new featurette from Beyonce Knowles-starring film "Obsessed" has just emerged. It starts with a scene previewing the first time Idris Elba's Derek Charles and Ali Larter's Lisa Sheridan meet in the lift, and it continues showing Lisa's effort to flirt with Derek.
A commentary from Elba and Larter is also provided. Elba describes Derek as a man who "is not trying to start relationship with her [Lisa]. He's just trying to be nice." Larter meanwhile calls her "character's point of view is about a woman who falls in love and will do anything that she can" to keep the man she loves.
