Critics of Magic: The Gathering‘s controversial crossover announcement with The Walking Dead have swiftly had their hopes of a U-turn dashed by one of the card game’s lead designers. For those in need of some context: fans over on the Magic subreddit discovered earlier this week on the official Gatherer database that every card included in the Secret Lair drop had undergone a legality change. Instead of being considered eligible to play in Commander format, the list of exclusions noted that each of the five cards – Glenn, Rick, Negan, Michonne and Daryl – were no longer usable in any rule set.
Naturally, this led to much rejoicing among folks not happy with Wizards of the Coast’s decision to print tournament-legal cards in such limited quantities, but it appears the applause was ultimately misplaced. According to a statement provided by Mark Rosewater over on his personal blog, the adjustment...

A controversial set of limited edition cards revealed for Magic: The Gathering last year has once again become a hot topic on social media due to a series of undocumented changes.
For those not in the know, Wizards of the Coast announced in 2019 that a crossover product with AMC’s The Walking Dead would contain bespoke cards not only extremely limited in availability but legal in certain formats. Presented in the form of a Secret Lair drop – premium bundles that can only be pre-ordered during a small timeframe – Rick, Daryl, Michonne, Glenn and Negan all boast unique effects and, particularly in the case of Rick, Steadfast Leader, have proven to be incredibly strong when used in Magic Online, where they’re already available.
Unsurprisingly, criticism of the move has been fierce ever since, though fans have recently been given renewed hope after what appears to be a change of heart on Wizards’ part.

Love them or hate them, leaks are an inevitability of any public-facing industry. Fans naturally want to know about upcoming releases for games, films and other entertainment, to the extent that some pursue any chance to get a scoop earlier than intended. Magic: The Gathering creator Wizards of the Coast is all too familiar with that arguably overzealous eagerness, with upcoming set releases often getting leaked online ahead of time, either by retailers selling product early or, as has recently turned out to be the case, theft.
For those that missed it, an individual going by the moniker NoUsernamePls has recently been uploading images containing cards from next month’s Commander Legends expansion online. The packs, which aren’t meant to be officially available until November, were part of an eBay auction, and the Mtg AminoApps user had little reason to believe they were obtained illegally.

Spoiler season for Magic: The Gathering‘s final set release of 2020 has almost arrived and, as usual, lead designer Mark Rosewater has decided to preface those previews with a laundry list’s length of teasers intended to whet players’ appetites. Having become something of a tradition in recent years, Rosewater’s hints (found over on his Blogatog) are presented in the form of vague descriptions which, while accurately describing the card each belongs to, purposely omits other pieces of critical information in order to keep fans speculating.
This time around, the guessing game is separated into three categories, beginning with a summary of several mechanics which will appear in Commander Legends. The cryptic clues are as follows:
A card that lists fourteen creature abilities A card that returns three different cards types from the graveyard to the battlefield A card that basically turns one evergreen keyword action into another evergreen...

The latest in a long line of limited edition Magic: The Gathering products is due to go on sale later this week and its contents are causing quite the controversy indeed.
For those not in the know, Wizards of the Coast revealed earlier this week that it was teaming up with AMC’s The Walking Dead to create a series of Magic cards based on the TV show, all of which feature exclusive art and unique card text/abilities. As of writing, just three characters, Michonne, Negan and Glenn, have been confirmed to get their own cards, with more due to be revealed leading up to season 10’s finale on October 4th. Having been delayed multiple times due to Covid-19, Sunday’s episode will coincide with the opening of pre-orders for Secret Lair X The Walking Dead.

While this year’s Comic-Con wasn’t able to go ahead as planned, thanks to Covid-19, organizers have been able to beam all of the latest reveals and announcements straight to fans of all things sci-fi and fantasy via online panels. As always, Magic: The Gathering creator Wizards of the Coast had been intending to attend the show in order to promote various upcoming expansions for the collectable card game, including Zendikar Rising, and this past weekend, they did exactly that.
It’s far too soon to be showing off some of the cards included in the set (Double Masters is getting the lion’s share of attention right now), of course, though while we wait for those reveals, lead Mtg designer Mark Rosewater confirmed a number of new details for the location’s return, including, among other tidbits, that an all-new mechanic will make its debut in the fall expansion.

The full spoiler for Magic: The Gathering‘s latest set Core 2021 is out, and animal lovers will be delighted to discover that Cats and Dogs are two of the set’s major themes. Cats have been an established creature type for much of Magic‘s long history. But a rule change releasing with Core 2021 will finally give Dogs their time in the sun and here’s the lowdown on all the adorable Dog cards in the new set and the complicated history behind them.
Technically, this won’t be the first time in Magic: The Gathering that dog Creatures have been printed. But the various canine critters from Mtg’s past have all carried the Creature type Hound. Head designer Mark Rosewater explains in his blog for the Magic website why it’s taken so long to let the Dogs out.

The arrival of a brand new set may be the most exciting event in Magic: The Gathering, but a close second is undoubtedly playing along to the various card teasers and reveals that always precede each new release. Core 2021 especially, which is due to launch later this month, has been the subject of huge speculation thanks to a number of clues shared prior to spoiler season by lead Magic designer, Mark Rosewater.
All in all, ten of these cryptic hints were posted by Rosewater over on his personal blog and the entire set appear to have now been solved. But we don’t want to spoil all of the fun. You can view each individual card via the gallery below and once you’re done browsing, be sure to take a stab at matching the lot with their associated description provided after the break.

While Magic: The Gathering has never been known as a cheap form of entertainment, fans of the long-running collectable card game think Wizards of the Coast has gone one step too far with its latest product. Double Masters, a compilation set due to arrive later this year, features a large number of desirable reprints such as Doubling Season and Mana Crypt, cards that frequently fetch high individual prices on the secondary market.
In addition to the set’s clearly desirable contents, however, Wizards’ decision to include 2 rares and foils (at the bare minimum) in each booster pack has naturally led to the Rrp of each 36-pack booster box being far above that of what would usually be expected. While the price tag has since been removed from Amazon’s product listing, pre-orders briefly opened last week for $300 Usd per box and $16.50 for individual 15-card packs.

Magic: the Gathering players itching to get their hands on the game’s newest Standard set, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths might have to wait longer than originally anticipated. The Covid-19 pandemic has already delayed the set’s release on paper and the game’s head designer and unofficial spokesperson, Mark Rosewater, recently said he was unsure whether Ikoria products would ship out on May 15th in most regions as originally planned.
Rosewater was recently asked whether the release of Ikoria would be postponed any further and instead of allaying fans’ concerns, he replied with the following:
“That has a lot to do with factors out of our control. Trust me, we want to get the cards into your hands; we just want to make sure we’re doing it safely.”

The entire pilot of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuted at Comic-Con, a full two months ahead of the show’s September 24 premiere. Sorry, everyone not in San Diego.
And don’t expect any shaky cell phone footage to hit the Internet anytime soon: A crew of “S.H.I.E.L.D. agents” patrolled the Ballroom 20 floor to make sure rogue fans weren’t recording the top-secret show during Friday’s panel. (Yet another example of art imitating life imitating art.)
So what did the lucky few Whedonites have to say about the pilot? As you can imagine, the Twitter response was across-the-board positive — with one exception.
