The trailer has launched for Adar Shafran’s drama-comedy “Running on Sand,” which is being sold worldwide by Picture Tree International, ahead of the Israeli film’s international premiere at Palm Springs Film Festival (Jan. 4-15). It is released in Israel on Thursday by United King Films.
The film centers on Aumari (played by Chansela Mongoza), a young Eritrean refugee living in Israel, who is about to be deported back to his home country. After a spontaneous escape attempt at the airport, he is mistaken for a Nigerian striker, who is supposed to arrive at the same time.
Aumari seizes the opportunity and benefits from his new identity as the key acquisitions for the team of Maccabi Netanya. Despite the absence of any soccer talent, he is able to cover-up and heal the divisions of his struggling team, while a tender romantic bond with the charmingly unconventional daughter of the patriarchal team owner is growing.

Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov’s detention by the Russian authorities has been extended by yet another two months to July 11.
This decision was made by Nikolai Tkachuk, a judge of the Moscow City Court, claiming that the charged offence poses a particular hazard to the public.
Initially, it had been expected that Sentsov’s trial would start yesterday (May 11), the first anniversary after his arrest on the Crimean peninsula in May 2014.
However, Sentsov’s case will be kept in the public eye by the Ukrainian Pavilion at the International Village in Cannes’ Marché du Film in the next two weeks.
Visitors to the Pavilion will be invited to add their names to a petition calling for the 38-year-old director’s release.
This comes after the European Parliament passed a resolution in its plenary session in Strasbourg calling for the ¨immediate release¨ of all Ukrainian citizens illegally detained in Russia, including Sentsov and the Ukrainian pilot and MP...

The Europe-wide, one of a kind workshop program Sofa - School of Film Agents - which supports international film professionals and mediators in the realization of film cultural projects will take place from August 15th – 24th, 2014 in the Polish city of Wroclaw (Breslau). Founded in 2013, the second edition of Sofa’s workshop-initiative will invite young "film agents“ from Central and Eastern Europe, Germany, Central Asia, the Baltic Republics and, for the first time, Greece to work together with experts on their projects with the goal of further developing the regional film culture and industries in their respective countries.
Within the framework of the Works in Progress« screenings at the 49th International Film Festival Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic) – the most important film cultural event for the Sofa-relevant territories – Director, Nikolaj Nikitin introduced the eight participants to take part in the second edition of Sofa. "From innovative VoD solutions to a large-scale national cinema / theatrical digitialization project, to the founding of a regional film subsidy initiative: the breadth of these participating projects reflects - with impressive ideas - the film-structural challenges we are attempting to address in those respective regions“, states Nikitin.
In the presence of numerous Sofa partners and former participants, Nikitin presented the following eight participants of the second edition:
Anna Bielak, Poland : Aur! Magazine – Awesome / Unique / Radical!«. A high-quality cinema magazine in print for Poland. Dániel Deák, Hungary : Festivalised - Community Platform for Film Festival Guests«. A film festival advisory system which helps filmmakers to find the right festivals for their particular projects. Kestutis Drazdauskas, Lithuania : Front – Film Republic of Networked Theaters«. A cinema digitialization network for Lithuania. Cristian Hordila, Romania : Cluj City Film Fund. A film fund with which Cluj-Napoca intends to re-open its doors to the film world, re-creating a film production center around the city. Marija Stojanovic, Serbia : What I See - Program for Audience Development and Stimulation of Critical Approach in the Field of Audio-Visual Culture and Arts«. What we see is what we are: an educational film project for Serbia. Angeliki Vergou, Greece : Octapus - A delicious new way to watch Greek films«. A VOD-Platform for Greek films. Jakub Viktorín, Slovakia : Dds – Digital Database of Slovakia: Your Personal Online Library of All Film Content Slovakia can Provide. An internet-based database revolving around the film culture of Slovakia. Jonas Weydemann, Germany : »Directors Collection«. A b2b platform connecting producers/worldsales directly with national cinemas around Europe, providing a transparent system for licensor and licensee. From August 15th – 24th, 2014 the eight participants will work intensively on their projects with internationally experienced experts and mentors in the Polish city of Wroclaw (Breslau) - European Capital of Culture 2016. They will be supported by Sibylle Kurz (pitching expert, Frankfurt), Roberto Olla (Eurimages, Strasbourg), Ewa Puszczynska (Opus Film, Lodz), Renaud Redien-Collot (Novancia Business School, Paris), Peter Rommel (Peter Rommel Film, Berlin), Katriel Schory (Israel Film Fund, Tel Aviv) among others.
The success of Sofa has been proven: numerous projects from the first edition of Sofa 2013 have already been able to be realized or are shortly before. For example, Leana Jaluske’s project "Doktok“ – a distribution initiative for Estonian documentary films – was able to be established with the help of Sofa. Melinda Boros is currently leading the „Tiff Studio Workshops“ in Cluj and Sonja Topalovic was recently able to rejoice over Eurimages funding for her interactive database "Fbo – Festival Box Office“.
Sofa – School of Film Agents is a joint project of the Filmplus gUG (Cologne) and the Fundacja Filmplus (Warsaw) together with the city of Wroclaw (Breslau) and the Polish Film Institute, funded by the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation, the Federal Foreign Office, the International Visegrad Fund, the Film- und Medienstiftung Nrw, The Creative Europe Desk Poland, The Alfred Toepfer Foundatio and Eave – European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs and supported by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut in Poland (Krakow), Serbia, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Lithuania and its Head Office in Germany, and with the support of the Film Commission Poland and the Wroclaw Film Commission.

Exclusive: The return of the Zoo-Palast cinema to the Berlinale’s roster of screening venues is “the greatest challenge facing us this year,” according to festival director Dieter Kosslick.
Kosslick spoke exclusively to ScreenDaily less than three weeks before the 64th edition (Feb 6-16) kicks off with the world premiere of Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel on Feb 6, explaining that the festival will now have three centres throughout the city: at the Zoo-Palast where the Berlinale was based until 1999; at the Berlinale-Palast at Potsdamer Platz; and at the Friedrichstadtpalast in the former East Berlin.
“We now have a focus in the Western part of the city which is something we had always wanted: the Berlinale is back in the West! We have a balanced cinema situation in the whole of the city,” he said.
“We had to abandon the original idea of having the Friedrichstadtpalast only as a temporary venue while the Zoo-Palast was being...

COLOGNE, Germany -- Oscar-winning actress Frances McDormand has been named president of the jury at the 54th annual Berlin International Film Festival, organizers said Monday. McDormand, who won a best actress Academy Award for her role in "Fargo", will head up the seven-member jury that will choose the Gold and Silver Bear winners at this year's event. McDormand's latest film, "Something's Gotta Give", in which she has a supporting role, will run out of competition in Berlin. The festival runs Feb. 5-15. Another American independent film pioneer, New York distributor-exhibitor Dan Talbot, will join McDormand on this year's jury. The New Yorker Films founder and Lincoln Plaza Cinema owner is a Berlin film festival regular and has been credited with intro-ducing U.S. audiences to such European auteurs as Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Wim Wenders. Two former Berlin competitors are back for jury duty. Producer Peter Rommel has pocketed two Silver Bears in Berlin for his collaborations with German director Andreas Dresen: on "Grill Point" in 2002 and for "Night Shapes" in 1998.

Elvis lives. And he's tooling around a slum in Reykjavik in the form of a black-leather-jacketed Icelander who is jazzed on the American Dream of rock 'n' roll and big cars.
Playing at the Chicago International Film Festival, "Devil's Island" is a rambunctiously edgy entertainment that is scoped, in the inimitable Scandinavian style, through a lens darkly.
A scrappy glimpse at the underside of Icelandic society, "Devil's Island" is another example of an emerging Scandinavian cinema, one not mired in cranking out filmic adaptations of Strindberg or Ibsen dramas nor dominated by the stultifying shadow of Ingmar Bergman and the serioso cinetastes of government film boards. Like Norway's wondrously spry and spunky "Junk Mail", this modest movie is a bracing blend of drama and comedy.
For those who only know Reykjavik as an SAS stop-over on a European budget tour, the capital of Iceland is also the former home of one of the United States' most strategic Air Force bases, Thule. The facility has been abandoned in the post-Cold War era, but when the Air Force left, it left behind not only visions of American culture, but in this case, the barracks and Quonset huts of the base itself. The cylindrical metal structures give shelter to Iceland's poor, forming a housing project for the destitute in the city's outskirts.
In Einar Karason's canny screenplay, the American Dream is cross-connected with the downsliding lives of various inhabitants of this sorry social aggregation. The story revolves around a rollicksome chap aptly named Baddi (Baltasar Kormakur) who has spent his teen years in the good old U.S. and grooved on all the cultural goodies: rock music, Hollywood movies and the pantheon of American entertainers, especially Elvis and James Dean.
Returning to his ne'er-do-well clan in Reykjavik -- his grandmother is a fortuneteller -- Baddi assumes the role of American star. He's a wannabe James Dean, the local hero-of-the-moment for a community in dire need of uplift and diversion.
Invigorated with crusty comedy and riveted with the painful limitations under which these characters face their lives, "Devil's Island" is a terrific human story. Highest praise goes to screenwriter Karason for the robust writing and to director Fridrik Thor Fridriksson for the spry visualization that succinctly conveys the muddy nature of these people's lives.
The cast is well-selected, with special praise to Kormakur for his jaunty portrayal of the Elvis aspirant. Sveinn Geirsson is also a standout as Baddi's more serious brother.
Technically, the film is first-rate. Special praise to editors Steingrimur Karlsson and Skule Eriksen for its vigorous pace and to cinematographer Ari Kristinsson for its aptly murky cinematography.
