In what looks a key moment in the streaming revolution, Disney has announced that from Oct. 1 it will shutter its kids channels in the U.K. following the launch of Disney Plus and an inability to reach new carriage deals with Sky and Virgin Media.
All three linear Disney brand channels – Disney Channel, Disney Xd and Disney Jr – will be taken off air, though other Disney-owned networks such as National Geographic, Nat Geo Wild and Fox will remain. Last year, Disney did the same in New Zealand shortly after Disney Plus was launched there.
“The direct-to-consumer service, which garnered more than 54.5 million subscribers worldwide in its first seven months, will now premiere all the latest films, series and specials from the three Disney Channels, along with offering a rich and expansive back catalogue of Disney Channel titles in the U.K.,” said Disney’s official statement.

Showtime is moving Ethan Hawke’s The Good Lord Bird later in the year – a shift designed to put more context around the abolitionist miniseries as the focus sharpens on the issue of systemic racism in the U.S.
The Hawke drama was originally intended to premiere on August 9 but will now move its launch to October 4 in a slightly earlier slot – 9pm rather than 10pm.
The series, which is based on James McBride’s award-winning novel, is told from the point of view of Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a fictional enslaved boy who becomes a member of John Brown’s motley family of abolitionist soldiers and eventually finds himself participating in the famous 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry. Brown’s raid failed to initiate the slave revolt he intended but was a key instigating event of the Civil War.

BBC Studios and UKTV have commissioned crime drama “We Hunt Together” for UKTV’s Alibi channel. The six-part thriller, which is produced by BBC Studios, marks the second original scripted crime drama commissioned for Alibi, following “Traces,” which was announced in February.
The commission is the latest addition to UKTV’s expanding roster of scripted series, which also include dramedy “Flack” (pictured), starring Oscar-winner Anna Paquin. “Flack,” which aired on Pop in the U.S., debuted on UKTV’s W channel in the U.K. in February. Sharon Horgan and Lorna Martin’s comedy “Women on the Verge,” starring Kerry Condon and Nina Sosanya, also aired on W last October.
“We Hunt Together” is written by Gaby Hull, whose thriller miniseries “Cheat” aired on ITV in March. It follows two detectives as they try to outsmart a pair of killers, one a former child soldier desperate to suppress his predisposition...

Cheat creator Gaby Hull has written a six-part psychological thriller for UKTV’s Alibi – the British broadcaster’s second original drama since it moved into scripted commissioning.
Hull, who wrote the ITV and Sundance Now college thriller, is behind We Hunt Together, produced by BBC Studios.
This comes a week after the commercial arm of the British public broadcaster revealed it was taking control of the majority of UKTV channels following a landmark deal with co-owned Discovery. We Hunt Together follows Alibi’s move into original drama with Traces from Happy Valley producer Red Production Company.
The cat-and-mouse thriller begins with the collision of two people; Babeni, a former child soldier desperate to suppress his predisposition for violence, and Freddy, a magnetic and disarmingly charming free spirit. When Baba rescues Freddy from an attack following a date that has turned sour, something dark is ignited in them both. It also...

Marilyn Monroe has now been portrayed onscreen in practically as many titles as she herself starred in. Adding to the selection is BBC Studios with a forthcoming series about the events leading up to the iconic actress's death at 36 from a barbiturate overdose in 1962. Tentatively titled The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe, the limited series will be partly informed by Keith Badman's 2010 biography The Final Years of Marilyn Monroe.
Written by Dan Sefton, who previously created UK medical dramas Trust Me and The Good Karma Hospital, the series will look at Monroe's career aspirations and frustration over being typecast, as well as her highly publicized romantic relationships and rumored affairs with John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy.

The final months of Marilyn Monroe’s life are set to be dramatized in a new series from BBC Studios that will explore her relationship with Hollywood studios and with public figures such as JFK and Bobby Kennedy.
BBC Studios, the BBC’s production and commercial arm, has teamed up with Dan Sefton and Simon Lupton’s U.K. indie producer Seven Seas Films to develop the new show. It has the working tile “The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe” and will be based on parts of Keith Badman’s book “The Final Years of Marilyn Monroe: The Shocking True Story.”
Monroe, who died in 1962 at age 36, remains the subject of enduring fascination. The producers said the series would cover a period in which her behavior became increasingly erratic as her dependence on alcohol and medication caused her glittering film career to plunge.

In this competitive and unpredictable awards season, "The Hurt Locker" received an all-important ammo to move on, and perhaps win Best Picture at the Oscars.

James Cameron's sci-fi blockbuster "Avatar" will compete against Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" and award season favourites "The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air" for the Producers Guild of America's top movie prize.
Clint Eastwood's "Invictus", "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" and animated film "Up" were also among the 10 movies - instead of the usual five - included on the PGA shortlist for its Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures. "Up" is also nominated in the best animated film category, alongside "Coraline", "The Princess and the Frog", "9" and "The Fantastic Mr. Fox".
Meanwhile, Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange's Grey Gardens scored a mention for best TV movie - it will battle with "Prayers for Bobby", "The Prisoner", "Taking Chance", "Georgia O'Keeffe" and "Little Dorrit" for the accolade.

Perhaps the biggest surprise with this morning's announcement of the 2010 Producers Guild Nominees is the inclusion of not just Avatar, but the fact both District 9 and Star Trek made their list of ten films vying for the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award.
Along with those three we also have the rest of the Oscar front-runner elite. I have included the complete list below. I'm not sure I would say the winner at the PGA Awards makes for a guaranteed Best Picture winner at the Oscars. Althought the last two Best Picture winners (Slumdog Millionaire and No Country for Old Men) also won the PGA, it's a mixed bag after that with 13 of the 20 Producers Guild winners going on to win the Oscar since 1990.
The complete list of nominees is below and the PGA will announce the winner January 24 in a ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium based on voting by its 4,200 members.

The Producers Guild of America has chosen ten films as nominees for its Best Picture award. The winner will be announced Jan. 24 at the Hollywood Palladium.
I'm proud to say that besides "A Serious Man," their choices of their 10 film nominees are similar to my Top 10 Best Films of 2009. :happy
The PGA opted to expand their nominees to 10 in response to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences 10 Best Picture nominees.
Oscar watchers take note -- the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award -- has matched the Oscar Best Picture in 13 of its 20 years. So the film that will win the PGA has a strong chance of winning the Oscars.

Tina Fey's NBC series "30 Rock" took home its third trophy for best comedy, but the star/writer/executive producer said that having more nominees in the category this year made for "a more surprising and exciting night." She also refused to believe the Web chatter that her show was the front-runner: "The Internet is always wrong." Meanwhile, she said her dream guest star is Meryl Streep, who could play a love interest for Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy. Remembering that the two are doing just that in the upcoming film "It's Complicated," Fey changed her mind, saying Streep maybe could play Grizz Chapman's love interest. But Fey added: "We've been lucky to have so many guest stars, but this year we're really trying to focus on the (regular group of) characters."
