Hasbro’s talking Chewbacca mask (or, in corporate parlance, Star Wars: The Force Awakens Chewbacca Electronic Mask Roleplay Toy) became an unexpected sales sensation back in May when Texas mother Candace Payne shared a video of herself donning the Wookiee disguise and laughing hysterically at the noises it produced. Those who wanted to experience some fraction of Payne’s joie de vivre purchased the mask for themselves back then, and the toy soon became a coveted Ebay item. Months later, some purchasers of that Chewbacca mask might be wondering what else this damned thing can do except growl in a loud and inarticulate fashion. Luckily, John Edgar Park, who creates content for the open-source hardware company Adafruit Industries, has the answer. In a surprisingly intricate, 15-minute tutorial video called “John Park’s Happy Chewbacca Mask,” this modern day MacGyver shows how the toy can be disassembled and rewired to make...

Major Crimes looks into an old case at the request of Pope (Jk Simmons) but Chief Tommy Delk (Courtney B Vance) wants Brenda (Kyra Sedgwick) to investigate one involving a spate of armed robberies at medical marijuana stores; on the basis that Robbery/Homicide haven't been able to solve them. Whilst there, Delk also offers Brenda Pope's position as Assistant Chief. The team aren't happy about this new assignment, especially not Provenza (Gw Bailey). Brenda breaks the news to Pope about his case being dropped and he tells her he's only received job offers outside of the state. It's difficult for him to accept as he can't take his children, unless their mother leaves too. Brenda lies about Delk offering her Pope's job. Gabriel (Corey Reynolds) interrupts, as usual and tells Brenda there's been another robbery and a murder too. Sam Dodson (Tim Guinee) - suspect number 1, owned the store with the Vic,...

Idol producers don't make it easy on the losers, they have to maintain some stoicism and buck up as their dreams shatter in front of 30 odd million people tuning in. Their families sitting at the sideline. Dreams dead. Go home. Four were sent packing, two men, John Park and bowtie onesie-wearing Jermaine Sellers, who sadly did a nice rendition of the song he sang the night previous, which got him booted off. The Idol producers make these people get up, after they know it's the end of the line, and put the brave face on and do it one more time for posterity. Time has to be filled up, and all the artful commercial breaks and guest...

The voters have spoken! Four of this season's top 20 hopefuls were sent packing on Thursday night's "American Idol." Did one of your favorites get eliminated? First to get the boot was John Park, whose pop-star dreams came crashing down in the aftermath of his critically maligned take on John Mayer's "Gravity." "I've really enjoyed my time here," he said, adding that his highlight on the show was meeting Shania Twain, as well as his fellow contestants. Second to say adios was Jermaine Sellers, who did little to endear himself to the judges with his rendition of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." "I'm a church singer -- that's where my heart is," Jermaine said. "In God there's no failure. … so I leave here happy." Next, the door was thrown wide open for Michelle Delamor's departure, following her pitchy performance of Creed's "With Arms Wide Open." "I think I was...

Highlights, song choices and judges input from tonight's Top Ten Idol Guy Performances:
Michael Lynche--"This is a Man's World" (James Brown)--Rave reviews from all judges; Randy gave him a standing ovation. Simon said 'completely different from last week'. (Sure kept my attention!)
John Park-----"Gravity" (John Mayer)---Randy says it wasn't special with a few pitch problems. Ellen and Kara agree it was better than last week, but needed soul and connection to the audience. Simon says he thinks John will be returning to his own band this week. (Pretty forgettable.)
Casey James----"I Don't Wanna Be" (Gavin Degraw)---Randy praised his guitar playing, saying he was channeling Hendrix. Ellen says she wants to see him perform more. (??) Kara says Casey took two steps backwards for her and his singing wasn't distinct or on key. Simon says he was trying to be a rock star and agrees...

It was the moment of truth for the Hollywood Week contestants on "American Idol." On Wednesday night, dreams were fulfilled, while others were slashed, as Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, Randy Jackson, and Ellen DeGeneres announced the final 24 contestants. Janell Wheeler, 24, from Tampa, Fl was elated that she will progress to the show’s next round. She burst out of the theater doors to Ryan Seacrest and pronounced, "If I was Bikini Girl, I'd kiss you right now." Not everyone was a rookie auditioner. Lacey Brown, 24, returned after not making it through last year. She impressed the judges with her rendition of "What a Wonderful World," which offered as background vocals for a montage of other contestants receiving good news. Unfortunately, not all veterans to the "Idol" stage were so lucky. Angela Martin met a disappointing fate for the third time. The mother of a special needs daughter had to pull...

We're headed into the final week of American Idol auditions -- how quickly they've sped by, yet how tedious they've gotten, no? -- but before we reconnect with Victoria Beckham in Denver tonight, let's take the temperature of where things stand with the Golden Ticket-getters from Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Orlando, Los Angeles, and Dallas. Check out my Top 20 countdown (hotlinks to all auditions included for those of you with faulty memories/lives outside the Idolverse), then vote for your favorite in the poll (after the jump). And if you're not already doin' it (and doin' it well), follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak.

With Paula Abdul moving on to bigger and better things (Tbd), "American Idol" had a gaping hole to fill during their season-nine audition process. As a solution, producers put their Rolodexes to good use and called up some celeb pals to sit in during the tryouts.
Everyone from Broadway vet Kristin Chenoweth to heartthrob Joe Jonas answered the call. But how did the various Rent-a-Judges stack up against one another? Which ones floundered and which ones made the grade?
It's time to rate the "American Idol" guest judges!
Katy Perry: A+

20. Katelyn Epperly (New this week): Producers inexplicably played up her divorcing-parents backstory, and (blasphemy alert!) the shaggy-maned blonde admitted she'd long been "stand-offish" about auditioning for the show. Still, Katelyn's choice of Duffy's "Syrup and Honey" was refreshingly left-field, and as Shania Twain noted, girlfriend has the kind of voice one might hear on a hit record. 19. Maddy Curtis (Last week No. 17): Charming 16-year-old warmed hearts and won fans thanks to a sweet package that highlighted her loving relationship with her four brothers with Down syndrome. But nerves and inexperience bubbled through her rendition of "Hallelujah." Perhaps a...

After nine seasons of American Idol, it's not always easy to sit through the boob-boxers and accordion players and Gimmicky Gerties of the world as we wait for the revelatory powers of a Frenchie Davis or a David Cook or a Melinda Doolittle. Hey, fellow American Idol fans! Want to hear more from last night's Chicago auditioners? Well, you're in luck! We've scoured the Web and found previously recorded music by some of the musicians, as well as some interesting background information about one blink-and-you-missed-him hopeful. Without further ado... Keith Semple: Sadly, a Fox spokesperson confirms that Semple did not attend Hollywood Week due to Visa issues. But if you watched TV in England circa 2002, you might have already seen the sensitive rocker who performed Bryan Adams' "Heaven" in front of Shania Twain & Co. Indeed, the guy spent a few months...

John Park is a 20 year old student who wanted to study singing after high school, but his parents forbade it. He claimed that “they wanted me to have a job when I graduated.”
For his Chicago audition John sang ‘If I Ever Leave You Baby’, and afterwards Shania Twain remarked on his “beautiful bottom end”, and his “beautiful lips”. She sounds a bit smitten by Mr Park we think!
John is rumoured to have made it through to the American idol final 24 contestants. Do you think he deserved the place? leave your comments below.

Tuesday night's "American Idol" felt like one of those "in between" episodes of "Mad Men." You know, the ones where it takes Don Draper 40 minutes to pour himself a glass of water but you just know that something epic will happen next week? Coming off last week's "Pants On The Ground" lovefest in Atlanta, Chicago felt like a deep-dish letdown.
Okay, I take that back. There were a few bright spots, and I'm not just talking about orange hair highlights on the girl who deadpanned, "I believe I have what it takes to become America's next top model. I mean Idol!" (Ironically, she appeared as though she was lying. Regarding both shows.)
Shania Twain took time out of her busy schedule of breathing in order to sit in Paula's empty chair and play with the strings on her blouse. There weren't many "Shania Moments" worth talking about, per se. She...

It was a tough "American Idol" audition in Chicago as only 13 golden tickets were issued out of thousands. Simon Cowell uttered some nasty words when a lot of the auditioners were either mediocre or plain bad. At one point he said, "Do you find that when you sing at home, a lot of animals turn up outside the house?" Nicer Shania Twain appeared as the guest judge.
The show however was kicked off with a successful audition from Katelyn Epperly. Singing "Syrup and Honey", the curly blonde impressed the judges and went through with unanimous vote. The next act, however, brought the tone down. 26-year-old Amy Lang has an inappropriate dream about Ryan Seacrest and when she entered the room, she butchered her audition by displaying a kind of "boob boxing".
A remedy was quickly brought in with the appearance of 16-year-old Charity Vance. Her parents own a salon and...

"I was very surprised and, yes, you have a beautiful bottom end," Shania Twain told American Idol auditioner John Park. And then it got weirder from there. Maybe because the Canadian country star was finally saying something, Kara, Randy and Simon more or less jumped down her throat on tonight's Idol when her longest critique in two days wandered into double-entendre territory. "You have nice lips," Twain continued, perhaps not realizing that she was digging a deeper hole for herself. The 20-year-old Park was pretty thrilled, though, and he was good enough to join the few others who impressed the judges enough in Chicago to score a ticket to Hollywood. Among them were...

On Wednesday night (January 19), "American Idol" headed to Chicago, hoping to find talent on par with last week's Atlanta auditions. And while there were some serious pipes on display in Chi-Town, there were also more than a few misfires. And a whole lot of misfits too.
Chicago definitely let its freak flag fly, rolling out a series of bow-tie-clad Tom Jones enthusiasts, mealy-mouthed Tiny Tim impersonators, accordion players, angry mothers and one rather buxom "Idol" contestant who showed off a move she (pretty aptly) described as "the boob flex."
All in all, it was an interesting show — only 13 golden tickets were handed out to some 12,000 auditioners — and though guest judge Shania Twain tried to play nice, Simon Cowell,...
