Bareilly Ki Barfi
Starring Ayushmann Khurana, Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon
Directed by Ashiwini Iyer Tiwari
Early in the plot, we are told that the film’s heroine Bitti is no Sati Savitri. Thank God for small town mercies! In fact she adheres to another kind of stereotyping that Hindi cinema has lately embraced. You know, the small town girl who is hip and happy, sassy and sexy, rides two-wheelers and smokes whenever she can get her hands on a cancer stick, and when a prospective groom asks her if she is a virgin Bitti retorts, “No I am not… are you?”
Ah, long live the virgin bride.
Bitti is from the same feisty school of small-town rebellion as Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met, Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu and Alia Bhatt in Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. In fact, what Bitti thinks to be streaks of rebellion (breakdancing, watching angrezi films,...

When filmmaker Nikhil Advani met the Showman Subhash Ghai on Saturday to narrate his interpretation of Ghai's 1983 blockbuster Hero, Nikhil never imagined Ghai would respond so warmly to the new-age Hero. Apparently, Nikhil has completely re-written Hero, giving a new-age twist to every character and situation in the original. Says a source close to the project, "Salman Khan who produces the Hero remake wanted every character and situation from the original to be changed. While Jackie Shroff was a soft-hearted goonda in Ghai's Hero, Sooraj Pancholi would be a hardened criminal in the remake. The entire original script has been dismantled and deconstructed by Nikhil Advani and his co-writer Umesh Bist. Nikhil went to Ghai as a gesture of respect for the creator of the original material. He didn't expect his re-mixed Hero would get such a thumping approval from Subhashji." Normally, remakes leave the original directors very pissed off.

Mumbai, Dec 30: The inimitable Sai Paranjpye, who now lives a secluded life, remembers her "Chashme Buddoor" actor Farooque Sheikh as a sweet wonderful person who wouldn't even mind flirting with her.
"Farooque was an angel. He was god's child. One always says nice things about the departed. But honestly, even if Farooque were alive, I wouldn't have a single bad thing to say about him," said the 75-year-old.
"I'd say, 'Farooque, kuch toh sharam kijiye. You are flirting with me and you're flirting with my daughter, just because your mother is not here to see what you are up to.' He was so sweet, so wonderful."

On Saturday morning, Deepti Naval woke up to the rude shock of hearing that her favourite co-star Farooq Sheikh was no more. Stifling her sobs, Deepti says, "I spoke to Shabana in the morning. We were both simply howling on the phone. My last interaction with Farooq was two months ago at the Sharjah Book Fair. I was invited to read from my books and he was in conversation with me. He was a voracious reader. I woke up to say, 'what a beautiful morning'! And then a friend called and put the phone to the television where I hear Farooq is no more. What do I say? He was not just a constant part of my career, but also of my life. Oh God! It's so hard to believe he's gone. We worked together for the first time in Chashme Buddoor and we did 7-8 films together after that.

Mumbai, April 12: Thanks to the success of last year releases "Housefull 2" and "Vicky Donor" and David Dhawan's latest "Chashme Baddoor", the fear of the Indian Premier League (Ipl) is vanishing from the minds of filmmakers who have begun to feel that cricket and cinema can co-exist.

Mumbai, April 7: Rubbishing reports that Sai Paranjpye is upset about the remake of her "Chashme Buddoor", David Dhawan says he has done nothing that would offend the director of the old classic.
"How can she be upset without seeing my 'Chashme Baddoor'? I have not taken anything from her film except the idea of three friends, two of whom are 'pukka kaminey' types. That apart, if Sai was to see my 'Chashme Buddoor', she wouldn't recognise it," said Dhawan, a director who is an expert in churning out hit comedies like "Hero No.1", "Biwi No. 1" and "Partner".
The 1981 movie starred Farooque Sheikh, Deepti Naval, Rakesh Bedi, Ravi Baswani and Saeed Jaffery, while the new one features Ali Zafar, Taapsee Pannu, Siddharth, Divyendu.

After a huge impact in Rang De Basanti, Siddharth has been busy with his South Indian assignments. He is back on Mumbai with a riotous role in David Dhawan's Chashme Buddoor. "At the moment I'm doing films in four languages Tamil, Telugu, English and Hindi. That's damn exciting for an actor who always complains about the quality of work offered to him. Mera number aa gaya. I am in Mumbai when Mumbai wants me. Nothing substantial has been offered to me. When I am in Mumbai I am asked about my 6-pack. Every young actor in Bollywood has started looking the same. That's scary. The only way I get work in Mumbai is if the A-listers in Bollywood turn down films. I was the 17th actor approached for Rang De Basanti. I was probably the 17,000th option for Midnight's Children. I am lucky Deepa was in Mumbai long enough to hear about me,...

It's the era of instant communication and the new Chupke Chupke will reflect that." While the cast for the new Chupke Chupke is yet to be decided, we hear the role of the heroine's suspicious brother-in-law, played with such magnificent comicality by Om Prakash in the original film, is likely to go to Rishi Kapoor. Rishi and David Dhawan are currently working on a remake of Sai Paranjpye's Chashme Buddoor. When asked about the cast of the new Chupke Chupke,...

It is the season of plenty for the Chashme Buddoor remake in Goa. Ever since David mentioned that he was searching for an alternative title for Chashme Buddoor, suggestions on twitter and other public forums have been pouring in. Says the director, "The titles being suggested are incredible. From Buree Nazar Waala Tera Mooh Lal to Khatte Angoor to Nazarbattu...I'm very confused. And now with Sai Paranjpye's Chashme Buddoor undergoing a complete image revamp, Anupam Kher who was signed to play a key comic role in Dhawan's film, has a triple role. Says David, "Anupam's character is completely new to my Chashme Buddoor. He plays three brothers named Suryakant, Chandrakant and Prabhakant." The idea of turning Kher's role into a triple role apparently materialized when the unit descended on Goa. According to a source, Anupam was meant to be a character who keeps showing up everywhere at the most inopportune time.
