There’s been a small trend as of late; the landscape of small, independent cinema has taken to a particular geographical one, chiefly South East Asia.
A handful of the most critically acclaimed films of the past few years – 2011’s The Raid, last year’s Mister John, and Bifa-scooping Metro Manila, and now this weekend’s The Rocket – are all set in the beautiful region, including the rapidly approaching The Raid 2: Berandal. Each movie evokes the culture of its setting and its people, is authentically shot in the provincial language, and made by a foreign team – and if a production hasn’t had a fully Asian crew, both the creative and financial driving forces have been alien ones. Every aforementioned production has been English, minus The Rocket which happens to be Australian – but the people behind them have still very much been strangers in a strange land. What are...

Jake Gyllenhaal cop drama was the only film to deliver a gross in excess of £1m, though Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine sneaked a nifty total to become his biggest ever opener
• Read Mark Kermode's review of Prisoners
• Read the archive of Charles Gant's UK box office reports
The winner
Late September, rarely a robust time for UK cinemagoing, continues the seasonally becalmed pattern. Overall, the 27-29 September session represented the third worst weekend for box office in the past year. Given that the previous frame delivered the second worst, it's clear just how sluggish the market is right now.
The only film delivering a weekend gross in excess of £1m was Prisoners, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. Aside from the previous weekend, when Rush held on to the top spot with £1.34m, Prisoners' £1.37m tally is the lowest for a No 1 film since Dredd landed...

Metro Manila | Diana | The Call | Ripd | Kelly + Victor | Hawking | Cold Comes The Night | A Belfast Story | Harrigan | InRealLife | 9.79* | Mademoiselle C | Phata Poster Nikla Hero
Metro Manila (15)
(Sean Ellis, 2013, UK/Phi) Jake Macapagal, Althea Vega, John Arcilla. 115 mins
Street-level social drama slyly develops into gripping crime thriller in this resourceful Anglo-Asian movie, a distinctive spin on the familiar theme of innocent country folk in the corrupting city. The squalor of modern-day Manila is vividly evoked, as our goodly, hard-up couple struggle to gain a foothold, but the opportunities they get only lead them into the moral shadows.
Diana (12A)
(Oliver Hirschbiegel, 2013, UK/Fra/Bel/Swe/Moz) Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews. 113 mins
History repeats itself as farce in this unintentionally laughable rendition of Diana's final years and her "secret" affair. It's no deeper or better informed than your average celebrity mag.
The Call (15)
(Brad Anderson, 2013, Us) Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin, Michael Eklund.

We've been talking about the Toronto film festival winding down for what feels like weeks now. And, finally, it is, for us at least - the last of us fly home today. The real thing actually packs up shop on Sunday, when they announce the people's choice award.
The sole piece of Toronto content you can look forward to today is an outstanding, in every sense, review of Jason Bateman directorial debut Bad Words.
But there's plenty more to enjoy on the site including:
• Five best moments
• A clip from the restored Wicker Man
• A blog by Nicholas Barber on good-looking presidents
Plus all the bumper content from Friday's paper, including Film&Music interviews with
• Jennifer Coolidge for Austenland
• John Turturro for Fading Gigolo
• David Cronenberg for his props exhibition
• Half of a Yellow Sun director Biyi Bandele.
… and reviews...
