Another edition of the Los Angeles Film Festival is in the books. Thirty nine films had their world premieres at the 2015 festival, 59 percent of the films that screened were from first-time directors. Audiences applauded and filmmakers left the theaters grinning from ear to ear. But where do their movies go from here? Scott Mansfield, Founder and Managing Partner at Monterey Media, an independent distribution company that acquired "Runoff" at La Film Fest 2014, said most of the filmmakers he works with know very little about distribution. "It's a foreign world to them," Mansfield said. "They're riding high because festival audiences have loved their film, but the reality is now [they're] facing the red pencil's of the critics and serious competition consumer's.

Read More: Monterey Media Acquires True Crime Drama 'The Pardon' Monterey media has acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to writer-director Charlie Levi's award-winning drama "Childless," starring Joe Mantegna, Barbara Hershey, Diane Venora and James Naughton. The film won the Visionary Award at the Boston Film Festival during an initial test screening. The uniquely styled drama centers on four adults in the aftermath of the sudden passing of a teenage girl. As each gets ready for the funeral, they speak their private thoughts directly to the camera in an attempt to understand and justify the current states of their own lives. It's ultimately left up to the viewer to make sense of these off-kilter, self-serving, yet frequently humorous personal accounts. "We are so very thrilled to be on board with these wonderful actors and this distinctive film with its interesting history," commented Scott Mansfield, Managing Partner of monterey.

The weekend is chalk full of new Specialty releases, though most will likely be low performers in terms of dollars at the box office. Entertainment One is opening Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen starrer Outcast with limited runs and will likely find tepid returns at the theatrical box office, though it may shine in the digital/on-demand space where it will also bow this weekend. Documentary Ballet 422 (Magnolia Pictures), meanwhile, has had solid buzz heading into the weekend and should score well in its niche market. Monterey Media is hoping to have traction with stars Wes Bentley, Vincent Piazza and Amber Tamblyn as it opens 3 Nights In The Desert in theaters and on-demand, while Freestyle Releasing is targeting the rom-com crowd for its debut, One Small Hitch. Other Specialty openers this weekend include First Run Features’ doc The Other Man: F.W. de Klerk And The End Of Apartheid In South Africa,...

Citizenfour, directed by journalist and filmmaker Laura Poitras, tells the story of Nsa leaker Edward Snowden as he disclosed massive domestic U.S. government spying. The film unfolds in real time as Poitras and Guardian colleague Glenn Greenwald, working on a long-term project about government surveillance, were contacted online by a mysterious source calling himself “Citizenfour.” The film, completed in secret while Poitras was in self-imposed virtual exile, alleges even more Nsa overreaching at home and abroad than just what came out of the massive pile of U.S. documents Snowden leaked.
Another potential awards contender also arrives in U.S. theaters this weekend: Sweden’s entry for Foreign Language Oscar,...
