Spoilers: Jeopardy! champion Mattea Roach went for her 24th consecutive win on Friday — and it came down to a single dollar.
Challenger Danielle Maurer won tonight’s game by the measly sum, ending Roach’s audience captivating reign as a champion on the popular game show.
Maurer, a digital marketing manager from Peachtree Corners, Ga., finished in first place with 15,600, while Roach, a tutor from Toronto, Ontario, came in second with 15,599.
“It feels still kind of like a dream,” Roach said. “I really came down here hoping to maybe win one game, and so I still can’t believe it. You know, it’s strange, obviously I didn’t come through in the last one. But I still feel so happy and so lucky to have had this experience.”
Roach, who was in the lead with 19,200 heading into Final Jeopardy!, wagered 3,601 and did not respond correctly, while Maurer, who had 11,400 going into the round,...

When Joe Biden held a drive-in rally in an amphitheater parking lot in Atlanta on October 27th — one week before the election — he made sure to welcome hip-hop culture. Election Day was near, and he was on the south side of the city, in an area that groomed hip-hop luminaries like Jermaine Dupri, OutKast, and Goodie Mob, and minutes from Clayton County, whose voters played a pivotal role in flipping the state from reliably red to unexpectedly blue and solidifying Biden’s victory over Donald Trump.

Over a two-year period beginning in 1979, at least 30 black children and young adults were murdered in the city of Atlanta. Eager to solve the case, officials pegged the crimes to 23-year-old Wayne Williams, who would eventually be found guilty of murdering two adults. Days after he was sentenced to two life terms, most of the children’s cases were closed and attributed to him, without ever going to trial. The new HBO series “Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered” explores how the victims’ family members remain skeptical of Williams’ guilt. It points to alternate suspects and biases, while investigating the racial tensions and cultural clashes that brought Atlanta to a boiling point, raising new questions that demand further investigation.
Directed by Sam Pollard, Maro Chermayeff, Jeff Dupre, and Joshua Bennett, the five-part “Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered” distinctly reproduces its period. It documents in detail Atlanta’s history over the past half-century,...

Since 2009 BAMcinématek’s: New Voices in Black Cinema has remained a premiere showcase for emerging voices in just that. A mix of documentaries, shorts, and narrative features, the program examines unique aspects of the black experience across the African diaspora. The black experience which is often treated a monolith is in truth multifaceted, dynamic, spans the globe, and various walks of life. BAMcinématek shines a light into these unseen corners of the black identity through up and coming dynamic storytellers. The series started April 26 and continues through 29 in NYC. Here are a few highlights from this year’s slate.
“Jinn”
Arriving at Bam on the heels of a Special Jury Award for writing at SXSW, writer-director Nijla Mu’min’s “Jinn” is a slice-of-life story dealing with faith, sexuality, and the black experience. The film features a dynamic black female protagonist rarely seen on screen. Summer’s (Zoe Renee) struggle...

"Maynard Jackson was the Moses of his time" is a typical comment in Samuel D. Pollard's documentary about the three-term Atlanta mayor, the first African-America to hold that office and the first of any major Southern city. The statement may be hyperbolic, but it reflects the enduring influence of the formidable figure who was instrumental in advancing civil rights from protests to political action. Recently given its world premiere at Doc NYC, Maynard proves as moving as it is informative.
Jackson, whose grandfather was the legendary civil rights leader John Wesley Dobbs, was impressive even in his early years. He...

Fonzworth Bentley says "knowledge is the new currency" — he wanted to get rebellious and deep on his new song and video "Fireside Chat."
President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his fireside chats to the country in the '30s and '40s; Bentley's "Fireside Chat" talks to the hip-hop community.
"It's kinda heavy for some heads," Bentley said. "Some kids, it's gonna be heavy for them. They don't wanna be reminded they have a responsibility."
Bentley's song stresses education and community responsibility and calls for more substantial hip-hop music. The video shows montages of images ranging from lynchings of young black men, Rosa Parks and Rush Limbaugh up to the protest in the wake of the Sean Bell shooting.
