That’s not how real women look!
When it comes to depictions of women’s bodies, Hollywood and the fashion industry have long faced criticism for missing the mark. That’s why the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media is teaming up with production companies Rose Pictures and Besties Make Movies on the documentary “Nothing Fits.”
Jennifer Holness, an alum of Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival, is attached to direct the feature film, which will examine the impact Hollywood and fashion have had on how multiple generations of women feel about their bodies and the struggles faced by those who do not fit the industries’ standard beauty norms.
“Nothing Fits” will take a deep dive into more than a century of fashion and deconstruct how it has elevated certain female body types while leaving others behind. The documentary aims to capture the experiential connection that women feel with fashion, while...

In an interview with Variety before her industry conference Masterclass (now available on-demand to festival attendees), Holness confirmed that negotiations are underway with a U.S. premium cable and satellite television network, with an offer on the table for the film.
“Subjects of Desire,” which had its world premiere at Austin’s SXSW in March, is described in Variety’s review as “a superb overview of how Black culture has influenced, and been influenced by, contemporary beauty ideals from Civil War times to #BlackGirlMagic and beyond.”

Programming director talks online version, why docs matter more than ever.
Hot Docs returns for its second year as a purely virtual event from April 29-May 9 as Toronto’s stay-at-home order remains in effect during a third lockdown. However programming head Shane Smith is ebullient about an “incredible range of stories and quality of films”.
While the pandemic resulted in some 10% fewer submissions this year, the fact that festivals and markets have been online for more than a year helped programmers track projects and filmmakers.

The South by Southwest Film Festival has rolled out its full programming line up, with high-profile new documentaries bolstering previously announced features.
For many in Hollywood, the last-minute cancellation of the Austin-based 2020 SXSW conference was a reality check about the severity of the coronavirus pandemic. Global lockdowns followed, and a year later, the film portion of the cultural event is soldiering on.
“We feel privileged to have been able to pivot to SXSW Online and present a fantastic treasure trove of programming, including a pared down and wonderful selection of films that we know will delight, entertain and move our attendees,” said Janet Pierson, SXSW’s director of film.
Among the selection is “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free,” featuring a 16mm footage archive of the late singer at work on his 1994 album “Wildflowers,” largely considered his best. The film is directed by Mary Wharton, and leans into SXSW’s reputation for top-tier music programming.

Shamier Anderson (“Wynonna Earp”) and Stephan James want to break down barriers of discrimination and combat systemic racism in the Canadian arts.
On Dec. 3, the Scarborough, Ont. brothers announced the formation of The Black Academy, an expansion of their not-for-profit B.L.A.C.K. Canada, which they established in 2016. The new, Black-led organization will honor, celebrate and showcase established and emerging Black talent, amplifying English and French-Canadian talent and artists across the country.
“The impetus of The Black Academy stems from our long-lasting commitment, deep ties to our community, and an awareness of the lack of opportunities to celebrate and elevate Black talent in Canada,” Anderson tells Variety. “The Black Academy celebrates and inspires Black Canadians, not only in the arts, but culture, entertainment and sports. This is something that’s the first of its kind, and we’re excited to really bring it up and bring it out and build awareness around it.

Toronto -- After the success of CBS' "Flashpoint," Canadian indie producers are cranking out even more homegrown dramas and comedies that could look and feel perfectly at home on U.S. network and cable schedules.
Canadian cable channel Showcase has ordered 13 episodes of "Lost Girl" from Prodigy Pictures, a sci-fi drama that stars Anna Silk and Kristen Holden-Reid about inhuman women who seduce and feed off their human partner's sexual energy.
The producer is completing an interactive website, a graphic novel and a downloadable video game to accompany the 2010 broadcast bow.
Jay Firestone, Paul Rapovksi, Plato Fountidakis, Michelle Lovretta and Peter Mohan share executive producer credits on "Lost Girl." Wanda Chaffey is producing.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. has also ordered a slew of pilots as part of its growing development slate, including "Henry Starts Again" from E1 Television, which is shortly to start production on "Haven," a 13-part suspense TV series for Universal Networks International.
