It's Tom Hanks vs. Tom Cruise as beloved film Forrest Gump has beaten several Mission: Impossible movies on Pluto, per Flix Patrol. As film lovers around the world celebrate New Year's Day, what could be better than streaming some classic movies?
Forrest Gump is number one on Pluto's streaming charts, followed by the first four Mission: Impossible films. It's Hanks vs. Cruise, with one Tom taking the streaming crown. Also topping the chart on the first day of the year are two John Travolta classics, Grease and Pulp Fiction.
Hanks' film was an instant and beloved classic when it debuted during a fairly busy summer of 1994. Among the box office hits were Forrest Gump, The Lion King, True Lies, and The Maverick. The Academy Awards are often seen as a litmus test for the quality of a movie, with those that get nominated and win awards being the most important films of a given year. But the movies that win Oscars do not always stand the test of time, especially when the more problematic elements of a movie's plot or characterization are put under a modern lens.
Movies that were hailed in their day as being important works of art are under more scrutiny in 2024. Many movies that ran the table at the Academy Awards in years past do not look so good when seen by modern audiences.

Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis, the dream team behind Forrest Gump, reunited nearly three decades later for 2024's Here. Despite the anticipation, the star power, and the acclaimed director involved, Here has interestingly proven to be a massive box office disappointment, especially when compared to the duo's Oscar-winning 1994 cultural phenomenon. Here is also unlikely to receive any of the same critical accolades as its predecessor.
Here limped to a nominal $4.8 million opening weekend, lightyears away from Forrest Gump's impressive $24.5 million debut. As the film crawls to just $11.4 million in total domestic gross, it is abundantly clear that this particular Hanks/Zemeckis collaboration won't be mentioned in the same breath as their previous blockbuster hits like Cast Away (grossing $233 million) and The Polar Express ($183 million). In hindsight, multiple things caused Here to stumble so badly right out the gate.

A movie reuniting some of the major cast and crew from Forrest Gump has passed a box office milestone despite still struggling to break even. Directed by special effects innovator Robert Zemeckis, 1994's Forrest Gump was a smash hit. The movie, which is adapted from the Winston Groom novel of the same name and follows a man who unwittingly witnesses and influences many important historical moments over the course of his life, grossed $678.2 million worldwide against its $55 million budget and became the second highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide behind Disney's The Lion King.

Director Robert Zemeckis is known for innovating the technology of filmmaking but with Forrest Gump, he combined that with a classic American tale. With Tom Hanks at his absolute peak and Robin Wright (who reunited in Here) transitioning from eighties princess to dramatic actress, the trio were all at the perfect point in their careers to make an essentially strange movie and have it gross over $600 million at the global box office and sweep the Oscars.

Tom Hanks, who played the iconic eponymous character in the beloved 1994 drama Forrest Gump, has revealed why the film never got a sequel. A massive box office success, met with critical acclaim, and winning six Academy Awards, Hanks revealed that the lack of a follow-up wasnt because the studio didnt want it, but because everyone involved in creating the character didnt deem it necessary.
So, if Forrest Gump was so beloved upon release, why wasnt part two ever made? Forrest Gump star Robin Wright is responding to the criticism that's been leveled against her character. In the 1994 film, Wright played Jenny, the love interest who ultimately ends up marrying Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump.
More recently, Wright and Hanks reunited to star in Here, the new film from Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis. To promote the movie, Wright participated in an interview with The New York Times. She was asked about the suggestion that's been made that Jenny represents anti-feminism, and Wright commented on how the character has even been compared to the big bad from the Harry Potter franchise. While Jenny was admittedly "kind of selfish," Wright sees her relationship with Forrest as the "sweetest love story" that's been told.

Robin Wright has never believed that Forrest Gump was an anti-feminist story. Wright played Jenny, a young woman who eventually married Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump. While Wright and the rest of the Forrest Gump cast have moved on over the years, the movie has became a cultural giant. It was an adaptation of Winston Groom's book and earned an impressive $678 million at the box office on a $55 million budget. After inflation, that would be a gross of nearly $1.5 billion. The movie also won six Oscars, three Golden Globes, and three People's Choice Awards.
Yet, for all the praise that the blockbuster earned over the years, Jenny's character has never received much love. In an interview with The New York Times, Wright was confronted with the idea that she was an anti-feminist concept. The star quickly shut down any arguments against her character. After three decades, Forrest Gump remains one of Tom Hanks' most revered films. Given its immense success, it wouldn't have been hard to have a sequel made if Hanks was interested, but the actor is grateful he never went back down that road.
Per The New York Times, Hanks commented on how Forrest Gump is a film that stands on its own, making it unnecessary for there to ever be a sequel. As the actor explained, "It is this extraordinary amalgam that stands completely on its own and never has to be repeated. And thank God we never bothered trying to make another one. Hollywood actor Tom Hanks is pleased that no sequel to the beloved 1994 film Forrest Gump was ever created. In a recent interview, Hanks reflected on why another Forrest Gump movie wasn’t necessary.
The original film told the story of Forrest Gump, a man from Alabama with a low Iq who experiences important moments in history from the 1950s through the 1970s. Hanks received an Academy Award for his portrayal of Forrest. Despite the movie’s huge success, Hanks said “Thank God we never bothered trying to make another one.” He added that some stories are best left as stand-alone works without a follow-up.
While talks about continuing Forrest’s story did occur, Hanks said those discussions lasted only around 40 minutes before the idea was shut down. The actor recalled telling others “we said, ‘Guys, come on.'” Hanks felt the original film worked perfectly on its own as “an...

Tom Hanks is happy to leave Forrest Gump just how it is.
The Oscar winner, who reteamed with his Forrest Gump co-star Robin Wright and director Robert Zemeckis for their new movie Here, recently told The New York Times that he’s thankful a sequel to the 1994 film was never made.
“It is this extraordinary amalgam that stands completely on its own and never has to be repeated,” he said of the movie. “And thank God we never bothered trying to make another one. Why put a hat on a hat?”

Tom Hanks has reflected on the scrapped plans for a sequel to his multiple Academy Award-winning outing, Forrest Gump. Following the critical and commercial success of the original, there were many calls for a sequel, with original book author Winston Groom penning his own follow-up, Gump and Co., with original screenwriter Eric Roth also penning a script based on it in 2001. The years since saw the project die in development hell, initially due to the September 11, 2001 attacks, as well as the general lack of interest from Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis in making the Forrest Gump sequel.
While appearing on the ReelBlend Podcast to promote his and Zemeckis' latest movie, Here, Hanks talked about the discussions he once had regarding his potential return as Forrest Gump. It often gets overlooked that Tom Hanks actually plays two characters in Forrest Gump. In fact, the second character - Nathan Bedford Forrest - is the polar opposite of the title role Hanks plays in the film. The film is based on the 1986 published work of Winston Groom, where the Forrest Gump novel was very different to the motion picture. The movie takes viewers on a journey through the 1960s and 1970s, where Forrest finds himself in the middle of some huge historical events in Forrest Gump.
Despite Zemeckis' project being met with skepticism ahead of production, the picture is now considered one of the all-time greats, with Forrest Gump winning Best Picture over Pulp Fiction at the 1995 Academy Awards. Much of its success can be awarded to Hanks' phenomenal performance, which only serves as a reminder of the actor's skill set and permitted him to effortlessly transform into Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Forrest Gump gets a bad rap. In hindsight, it’s easy to dismiss Robert Zemeckis’s film, which starred Tom Hanks as the simple (but sweet) title character as cheesy. This is especially true if you compare it to the movies it beat at the Academy Awards that year – Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption – both of which have gone on to become unchallengeable classics. But the fact remains that Forrest Gump was a monster hit in 1994, with it the second highest-grossing movie of the year (behind The Lion King) and a signature role (for a while) for star Tom Hanks.

Robert Zemeckis’s comedy drama is rereleased for its 30th anniversary, starring Tom Hanks as its savant-patriot hero goof from the fictional town of Greenbow, Alabama. It is adapted from Winston Groom’s bestseller from the Reaganite 80s, but the movie arrived for the presidency of Bill Clinton, who had his own Gump body-language, and it happens to contain a complimentary remark about his hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas.
And every time I watch it, I swear that this entirely ridiculous, hokey-sentimental and politically naive fantasy isn’t going to get under my skin but every time it does. It is superbly paced, expertly acted, it looks great, and there is a kind of needling, sleeve-tugging genius in Hanks’ performance, despite that outrageous Jimmy-Stewart-with-a-head-injury voice.

Forrest Gump 2 was never made due to a combination of factors, including a rocky development process, Tom Hanks' reluctance to make a sequel, and the September 11 terrorist attacks. Forrest Gump 2 would have focused on recent historical events like the AIDS epidemic and the Oklahoma City bombing, which would have made the film extremely dark and potentially insensitive, especially in the wake of 9/11. It's likely for the best that Forrest Gump 2 was never completed, as it would have risked feeling like an unnecessary attempt to extend the original's moneymaking potential.

Exactly 30 years ago, Tom Hanks joined forces with Robert Zemeckis to create a film that would be etched in cinematic history forever — Forrest Gump. Sherry Lansing was at the top of Paramount at the time and the film was the biggest gamble during her time at the studio. Interestingly, the rights for the script based on Winston Groom’s book were owned by Warner Bros.

1994's Forrest Gump features Tom Hanks' title character meeting many real-life historical figures. Two of the only characters not to appear via archive footage were Elvis Presley and Dick Cavett. Gump also met several Presidents including Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon.
Forrest Gump featured Tom Hanks' title character interacting with several well-known historical figures. The 1994 movie, which was based on the 1986 Winston Groom novel of the same name, was directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay by Eric Roth. It was a major sensation in the mid-1990s, becoming the second highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide thanks to a gross of $678.2 million against its $55 million budget. It would then go on to win six Oscars, including Best Picture.
By the time the Forrest Gump ending catches up with the character in the early 1980s, he has the opportunity to meet quite a few real-life historical figures over the course of his adventures.

Movie vs. book differences: The novel's Forrest is more aggressive, foul-mouthed, and intelligent compared to the innocent film character. Friendship origins: In the book, Forrest meets Bubba in college, not boot camp like in the movie, leading to a close bond. Divergence in endings: The film has a more heartwarming conclusion with Forrest raising his son, while the book takes a darker turn.
Forrest Gump has gone down in history as a definitive piece of American cinema and introduced audiences to a remarkable title character, but the Forrest Gump book vs the movie shows a very different version of the story. Largely told in flashback by Forrest himself, the novel takes viewers on a trip through the latter half of 20th-century America, through the eyes of a guy who somehow manages to experience every triumph and tragedy of the era. If one was to compare two of the greatest cinematic products of the 1990s, it would be amiss not to elevate Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction to the top of the list. But it was also these two cinematic giants that competed for the Oscars in 1995 with one coming out on top and giving rise to a never-ending debate that rages even 30 years later.

Forrest Gump likely falls on the Autism Spectrum, with his unique narration immersing audiences in his world. Gump's focus on tasks and social awkwardness are characteristic of Asd, creating relatable experiences for many. The movie's depiction of a neurodivergent hero allows viewers to relate to Gump's journey, resonating with diverse audiences.
Most people who have watched the movie Forrest Gump can tell the titular character is not neurotypical. While both the author of the 1986 novel, Winston Groom, and Robert Zemeckis, the director of the 1994 movie, say Gump has no specific diagnosis, that hasn't stopped speculation.
Most of the information available online is conjecture by fans who relate to Gump in some way, although some professionals have tried their hand at a diagnosis. Imagine what it was like in the 1990s -- and being constantly told and reminded that Tarantino was revolutionizing cinema.
Not only was Quentin Tarantino's indie project being worshiped by film critics in 1994, but it was also being staged as the antithesis to the year's other subversive comedy, Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks.
Forrest Gump represented traditional values and innocence. (Though screenwriter Eric Roth nor Winston Groom ever intended the character that way)
Pulp Fiction represented cynicism and brutality triumphing over good intentions. It was an Oscar race partly conceived by Miramax and Harvey Weinstein, who, believe it or not, used to be good at other things besides...well, you know.
It was impossible for Gen X not to embrace Pulp Fiction as their generation's movie and the one that most spoke to their maturing culture. Maybe amid the media storm, I was the only one who saw what was happening.

In 1994, American cinema experienced a surge of exceptional films, among which Forrest Gump stands out prominently. Starring Tom Hanks, this heartwarming tale captured the hearts of audiences. While it didn’t quite surpass the popularity of The Lion King, which dominated the box office, Forrest Gump still made an impressive $679 million, according to The Numbers.

Forrest Gump's timeline entwines with historical moments, showing the character's unlikely but charming journey through American history. The film portrays Forrest's extraordinary achievements as he meets presidents, wins medals, and builds a shrimp empire, all against the odds. Forrest's heartwarming story reflects on destiny and chance, culminating in his role as a father and the impact of his adventures on history.
The Forrest Gump timeline spanned over 30 years and covered several iconic moments in American history. Forrest Gump is based on the 1986 novel of the same name by author Winston Groom and follows the titular hero as he grows up and finds himself in unusual and inspiring circumstances, especially impressive since Forrest is called "stupid" around every corner. Robert Zemeckis' 1994 Oscar darling "Forrest Gump" is a preachy, mawkish glob of syrupy sputum hocked from the throat of conservative America right into the face of the more daring, queer, artistically ambitious indie fare coming to the fore at the same time. It tells the story of a mentally disadvantaged man (Tom Hanks) who leans unthinkingly into every traditional trope of regressive Americana and meets nothing but success and fame. Forrest Gump is good at running and becomes a high school football star. He serves in the army and becomes a hero. He is very good at table tennis and becomes an Olympic champion. He tries his hand at small business -- shrimping -- and succeeds. He has an Iq of 75 and becomes a billionaire by following the rules.

The opening scene of Forrest Gump subtly hints at three major story events that will unfold throughout the film, such as Forrest's booming shrimping business and his history as a ping-pong champion. The feather that lands next to Forrest represents his journey throughout the movie, as he drifts through various historical events and yearns for a place to settle down. Placing the feather in the middle of the Curious George book symbolizes that the audience is in the middle of the story, highlighting the film's unique narrative structure and deeper themes of time and history.

Almost 30 years since its release, Forrest Gump remains one of the most remembered films of Tom Hanks' career, and perhaps one of the greatest Hollywood classics. The acclaimed actor and Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis teamed up to tell a tale that spanned an important part of American history, through the eyes of an endearing character.
Hanks has already become one of the biggest names in the film industry, and is one of the most successful actors at the box office. His presence in a movie can be synonymous of success. It hasn't always been this way, though, and it seems that the Academy Award winner has felt insecure about some roles many times. And one of those was Forrest Gump.

Jenny's scrapbook in Forrest Gump, an easy-to-miss detail, changes the nature of both Forrest's story and the film's ending, reframing it by adding a much darker twist. Released in 1994, Forrest Gump was an instant classic, securing six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Adapted by screenwriter Eric Roth from Winston Groom's novel of the same name, Forrest Gump acts as an examination of modern history, with its titular character having a part in almost every major event in American history throughout the latter half of the 20th century.
Forrest Gump may seem like one of the most innocent protagonists in all of cinema, but one minor detail hints at a darker side to the character. Jenny's scrapbook of all things offers a glimpse at a newspaper clipping that indicates Forrest has encountered significant legal trouble. This adds another layer to the film that changes everything: not only does Forrest Gump's personality seem less innocent,...

In 1994, one of the most iconic American movies was released directed by Robert Zemeckis: Forrest Gump. It was based on the novel of the same name which was published in 1986 written by Winston Groom. Just a year short of a decade later, Big Fish directed by Tim Burton was released to theaters, based on the 1998 novel by Daniel Wallace. The movies are strikingly similar based on premise alone — both focus on two men telling the stories of their lives, which present themselves as near epic adventures that life has taken them on. With so many similarities to compare between the two films, is Big Fish just a pseudo remake of Forrest Gump?...

Robert Zemeckis' 1994 film Forrest Gump spun a strange tale of a man who achieves great things despite a low Iq, but the events of the film can't compare to Forrest's wild life in the book it's based on. Written by Winston Groom, the novel version of Forrest Gump sees Forrest become a pro-wrestler, a chess champion, a Hollywood stuntman and — strangest of all — Forrest Gump goes to space, recruited by NASA alongside male ape called Sue. This is a bombastic turn of events even by the standards of Forrest Gump but, convoluted as it seems, isn't totally random (much to Winston Groom's credit).

Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump voice is one of the most imitated in film history, but the story behind its origin is not as well known. Decades after the film's release in July 1994, Forrest Gump's accent is still one of the character's most defining and recognizable traits. The story behind how Hanks came to create the Forrest Gump accent is not as instantly familiar, but it is genuinely heartwarming, and it gives further insight into the beloved actor's mindset and character.
It's well known that Forrest Gump is from Alabama, yet his accent can be difficult to place. In reality, the voice that Tom Hanks used to bring Forrest to life is from Mississippi. Notably, the reason why Hanks chose this accent underscores why he is a respected leading actor and what it means to be part of a Tom Hanks movie.

Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis have maintained a fascinating movie-making partnership for almost 30 years across a variety of different genres. Their first film together, Forrest Gump, won the two Best Actor and Best Director respectively at the Oscars while their latest earned them Razzie nominations in the same categories. Hanks has starred in four of Zemeckis' films to date with a fifth, entitled Here, currently in production. Examining all the movies that Hanks and Zemeckis have done together creates an insightful cross-section of the careers of two of the most influential Hollywood hit-makers to emerge out of the 1980s.
Though the majority of Zemeckis' most iconic films don't feature the actor, and Hanks' partnership with director Steven Spielberg has garnered him more consistent acclaim, the prominence that Hanks' performances have taken in his collaborations with Zemeckis has made the two a Hollywood pair worth noting. Adapting a classic comes with worries for fans who have witnessed many such attempts going awry. When it's the much-loved classic and the Best Picture winner Forrest Gump, there are even more reasons to be worried about. For the makers of the 2022 Indian remake, Laal Singh Chaddha (which you can check out on Netflix right now), it was the culmination of an eight-year-long journey to getting the rights to the Hollywood classic when Paramount Pictures finally decided it was time for Winston Groom's 1986 story to be retold through the Indian lens. Much like the 1994 original, Laal Singh Chaddha places the eponymous slow-witted but endearing protagonist at the crossroads of modern history of the country the story is set in - this time, India. While the official remake did not make heads turn at the box office at the time of its release, it gets quite a few things right...

Upon reflection, there couldn't be two '90s Hollywood studio films that are more opposite than Barry Sonnenfeld's "Addams Family Values" and Robert Zemeckis' "Forrest Gump." Both released in the mid-1990s (although the novel "Forrest Gump" was released a decade before making it to the big screen), the two films might represent the ends of an anarchist spectrum. On the one hand, the Addams family is a creepy bunch of murderers who live in a strange haunted mansion, and who take delight in the misery of others. They live far out on the fringe and they love it. They spray blood on people, pour boiling oil on Christmas carolers, and, in the famous climax of "Values," kill off all the counselors at a summer camp.

A single white feather drifts out of the sky and lands on the well-traveled sneaker of Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), a modest man with a big story to tell. Once he's done, a breeze carries the feather away again, perhaps to find another host with another tall tale.
"Forrest Gump" is an unlikely yarn about a young man who ran from bullies, ran for America, and ran for his life (and several others) in Vietnam; a ping-pong champion, shrimp boat captain, long-distance jogging guru, and inspiration for the Smiley Face; and a simple dude devoted to the two women in his life, his mama (Sally Fields) and his best friend Jenny (Robin Wright). Along the way, Forrest also manages to bumble into major points in American history, rubbing shoulders with presidents and the future king of rock 'n' roll.

"Life [is] like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get" is an unforgettable line from the unforgettable film "Forrest Gump." The adage, which gives a surprisingly enlightened view of accepting what life hands you, is not spoken by a philosopher or a pseudo-intellectual know-it-all. In Robert Zemeckis' 1994 Oscar-winning film "Forrest Gump," based on the novel by Winston Groom, the title character -- Tom Hanks affecting a unique Southern drawl -- shares the folksy wisdom that life is like a box of chocolates, in that you never know what you're going to get. This cutesy axiom is emblematic of the film's tendency to skew clumsy. It presents a simplified, candy apple version Americana wherein anyone, so long as they unwittingly serve as agents of American institutions -- college football teams, business owners, soldiers -- will be blessed with miraculous wealth. Forrest Gump was also responsible for unwittingly aiding in the...

Based on their mostly unfortunate track record, with a few commendable exceptions, it seems almost justifiably instinctual to decry any company’s intent to pursue English-language remakes of celebrated titles in other tongues and from other geographical settings.
But when the opposite phenomenon occurs, and a filmmaker abroad takes on a new version of a Hollywood property, the resulting effort can turn out just as disappointing.
Enter “Laal Singh Chaddha,” the Indian reimagining of Robert Zemeckis’ “Forrest Gump,” a financially successful and Oscar-winning drama that has lost its luster in the years since it was released in 1994, the more its blatantly questionable tropes are reexamined.
