Santa Monica, Calif. — A hungry Chris O'Donnell arrived straight from the set of "NCIS: Los Angeles" and polished off a piece of pizza. Joe Mantegna, Dennis Farina and Roger Ebert's wife were craving their favorite Chicago foods, too.
Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts felt right at home, with "Mr. Cub" Ernie Banks resting on a stool and Harry Carey's widow Dutchie standing at the bar.
There was a Midwest feeling in the air Monday night, even if everyone was almost 2,000 miles from the Second City. It was the 25th Windy City West bash, bringing together expatriate Chicagoans from film, television and sports for a taste of home on the West Coast.
"It's unlike any other Hollywood party. People are actually looking each other in the eye and talking," said O'Donnell, who grew up in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka. "There's nobody looking over anyone's shoulder. That's the difference.

Comics Paul Rodriguez and Larry Miller held a rally over the weekend in La to protest Jerry Lewis's departure from the Muscular Dystrophy Association (Mda). Mda announced last week that Lewis was no longer the organisation's honorary chairman and would not be "appearing on [this year's] telethon". Lewis acted as the public face of Mda and fronted the charity's Labor Day weekend appeals for more than 40 years. Rodriguez, Miller and fellow comedians Tom Dreesen and Norm Crosby lodged their complaints over Lewis's exit from Mda during a press conference at Hollywood's Laugh Factory on Friday. Miller quipped: "If this is the way we're going, we should also tell grandpa we don't need him for Thanksgiving." Laugh Factory owner (more)...

Roger Ebert ripped Jerry Lewis's removal as host of the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon as comedians rallied in support. News came Wednesday that the Tucson-based Mda had relieved the 85-year-old comedian of his duties as host, despite Lewis’ assertion that the upcoming labor day telethon would be his last. I have to confess my age in writing this particular review, because Johnny Carson was off the air by the time I was watching late night television (or rather, watching and appreciating it). For my generation, the names headlining the late night shows were and, with a little bit of controversy, remain Jay Leno and David Letterman. In my case, I had to familiarize myself with Carson through YouTube clips years after he’d retired. Tonight, the most complete compilation of episode’s from Carson’s 30-year-long career as host, starts 4 years into his career (1965) and spans up to 1990 (4 years short of his final bow) in a 15-disc set featuring some great moments and some of the best guest appearances (with a particular focus on comedians for this set, it would seem). It’s doubtful we’ll ever see a full set, just because the undertaking of committing that much...

On 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35Pm on CBS), we got to see a moment from the past. But this moment also provided a glimpse of the future 'Late Night' wars.
David Letterman's guest was his pal Tom Dreesen. Tom is a comedian who helped Dave out -- back when Letterman was just a 20-something, struggling stand-up comic. Tom got his friend a job on a never-aired NBC game show called 'Word Grabbers,' shot all the way back in 1976.
The young Letterman was hired to play a "celebrity" panel member, even though no one really knew who he was. ... And now, thrill to the sight of a mid-1970s David Letterman: complete with sideburns and an ugly, 'Saturday Night Fever'-style polyester shirt!

What do you say about a revolution that didn't happen? The comedy team of Tim Reid and Tom Dreesen should have been a watershed moment in American comedy. Here were two talented guys, natural performers who both came to comedy through the side door, who joined forces to create America's first black-and-white comedy team. The novelty alone ought to have pushed them to fame in the charged environment of the late '60s and early '70s. Instead, they merely did okay, barely earning a living in nightclubs, landing a couple of TV appearances, and recording an album. Then they broke up and found more success apart than they ever did together. Why? Dreesen and Reid have yet to answer that question for themselves. Their book Tim & Tom: An American Comedy In Black And White (written with sportswriter Ron Rapoport) suggests that more experience, a better understanding of the business,...
