The 2015 film Spotlight made waves with viewers all around the world. The film, based on a true story, received widespread critical acclaim and introduced many to an investigative journalist team that dedicated their lives to exposing corruption within the Catholic Church.
Actors Mark Ruffalo, Brian d’Arcy James, Michael Keaton, and Stanley Tucci pose with the journalists they play in the film ‘Spotlight’ | Mark Brown/Getty Images
While some of Spotlight was embellished or exaggerated for the sake of dramatic license, there’s one specific detail that is almost too outrageous to be true – one that involved a journalist’s shocking discovery of an abuser living just down the street from his very own house.
What is ‘Spotlight’ about?
Spotlight tells the story of The Boston Globe’s “Spotlight” team, the oldest continuously operating newspaper investigative journalist unit in the United States, according to IMDb, and its investigation into sex abuse...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Is “Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan going to be in the Margot Robbie-led “Barbie” movie? Sure sounds like it.
It all begins with the speculation that Coughlan would be on the next season of “Doctor Who” after she was photographed at the BAFTA TV Awards with Ncuti Gatwa. Just minutes before, it was announced that the “Sex Education” actor would be the new Doctor. Gatwa posted a pic of himself and Coughlan on his Instagram with a caption reading, “A pair of dolls.” He also included a boy and girl emoji and a pair of eyes next to Coughlan’s name.
However, Coughlan insists there’s no “Doctor” in her future. “I am not going to be on ‘Doctor Who,’” she told me Sunday at Netflix’s “Bridgerton” FYC event at Raleigh Studios in L.A. “We are doing something together, but it’s not ‘Doctor Who.

The Rookie seeks to challenge the status quo of cop shows when it returns for its its third season in January.
During a panel with ABC7’s Mark Brown, creator Alexi Hawley teased what’s to come in the new season and explained how the show will incorporate the ongoing conversations about police brutality sparked by the Black Lives Matter movement and the murder of George Floyd in May. Hawley, joined by members of The Rookie cast and writing team, explained that the current social climate heavily influenced the upcoming plotlines.
“It gave us a rare opportunity to really get into a lot of different topics. To talk about so many different aspects of policing – from stuff that happens on the streets to the stuff that happens on the stations, warts and all of the LAPD and policing in general, how hard it is to fire a bad cop, to make change in the system.

"Three girls named Sharon...?" Epic Pictures Group has released the official trailer for Sharon 1.2.3., a dating comedy from filmmaker/screenwriter Mark Brown (who wrote the original script for Barbershop and its sequels). The film is about a nerd who has become very wealthy running a tech company (what an original idea for a character). He's now dating two beautiful, older, women, both named Sharon, and things get even crazier when he meets a third woman named Sharon. Why does this seem like the most cliche nerd fantasy ever? Matt Bush stars as Jonah, and the full cast includes Nadine Velazquez & Erinn Hayes & Skyler Samuels as the three Sharons, along with Gina Rodriguez, Aarti Mann, Vik Sahay, and Will Harris. This is such a short trailer that sells it as simply and directly as possible, maybe that's all they need. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Mark Brown's Sharon 1.2.3., direct...

'Beauty' of a suit filed by MGM
Two competing movies titled Beauty Shop have led MGM to file a copyright infringement and breach of contract suit against writer-director Mark Brown. Brown is one of the creators of MGM's Barbershop franchise, which is set to spin off a movie called Beauty Shop, but Brown already is in preproduction with an indie project of his own, also called Beauty Shop and set in a black-run beauty parlor. The suit, filed Nov. 7 in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, seeks injunctive relief to prohibit Brown from developing his competing Beauty Shop into a film as well as unspecified damages. It names Brown, Beauty Shop Llc., Brown's Renegade Pictures and C4 Pictures as defendants. Brown received screenplay and producer credit on the original Barbershop and is an executive producer on the upcoming Barbershop 2. MGM's suit claims that he is "developing, producing and marketing a screenplay and motion picture entitled 'Beauty Shop' that is competitive with, and highly similar to, the films in MGM's 'Barbershop' motion picture franchise with full knowledge of MGM's prior use and exclusive rights in the 'Barbershop' (trademarks)."...

Rowland falls for indie 'Filler'
Kelly Rowland, one-third of pop trio Destiny's Child, is in final negotiations to star as the female lead opposite Duane Martin in the indie feature The Seat Filler for director Nick Castle. The project goes into production Saturday in Los Angeles with Nia Hill, D'Angela Steed and Martin producing. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are executive producing. Filler will see Martin -- who also co-wrote the project with Mark Brown and Tisha Campbell-Martin -- star as Derrick, a struggling, unemployed man who is studying for the bar exam. To make ends meet, he works as a seat filler for various awards ceremonies. While occupying the seat of a high-powered entertainment attorney, Derrick meets his dream girl, Jhnelle (Rowland), a gorgeous superstar who is performing at the event. To Derrick's amazement, Jhnelle falls hard for him too. There is one problem: Jhnelle is under the mistaken impression that Derrick is a wealthy lawyer, not a lowly seat filler. Rowland is repped by CAA, Matthew Knowles of Music World Music and attorney Ken Hertz of Goldring Hertz and Lichtenstein. She will be seen next in New Line Cinema's Freddy vs. Jason, due out next month.
