Film CommentaryMari said that Maamannan, his film’s powerful protagonist, is a reimagination of Esaki, a subservient character in ‘Thevar Magan’ who is willing to sacrifice his life for his master Sakthivelu, played by Kamal Haasan.Letting out a spoiler during the film Maamannan’s audio launch, Tamil filmmaker Mari Selvaraj said that his anti-caste film with Vadivelu and Udhayanidhi Stalin in the lead roles was “inspired” by the cult classic 1992 film Thevar Magan. Mari said that the powerful character of ‘Maamannan’, his film’s protagonist, is a reimagination of ‘Esaki’, a subservient character in Thevar Magan who is willing to sacrifice his life for his master ‘Sakthivelu’, played by Kamal Haasan. It is no coincidence, according to Mari, that he chose Vadivelu, who plays Esaki in Thevar Magan, to now play the reimagined character of Maamannan. Mari establishes the politics of Maamannan from the very first shot, just like...

Amiya Nath Bose was born in 1915 in a family of stalwarts. Vociferous protestors against British oppression, Amiya’s father Sarat Chandra Bose and uncle Subhas Chandra Bose often found themselves imprisoned or detained under some pretext or another. But the separation did not stop them from being connected to young Amiya. They wrote to him often. From prison cells and faraway lands, in good times and bad. Many words were censored and lost but some stayed, long after the people who wrote were gone, leaving behind a legacy that we read today.

Indian nationalist leader Subhas Chandra Bose has been one of the most controversial figures of contemporary Indian history. Both regarding his life (particularly his decision to leave (ousted for others) the Congress in 1939 following differences with Mahatma Gandhi, and join the Nazis and Imperial Japan against the British, but more regarding the events of his death. While the official record places it on August 18, 1945, after his overloaded Japanese plane crashed in Japanese Taiwan, there are two other theories that have drawn many followers, both of which state that Bose actually faked his death. The first suggests that he managed to escape to Russia, where he was captured and tortured to death in the gulags, while the second that he eventually left Russia, became a monk and returned to India under the name of Gumnaani Baba. The government’s stance on the findings of three different committees that dealt with the events,...

Ever since the posters of Ashutosh Gowarikers ambitious "Panipat" were released, Internet has been buzzing with extreme reactions. While some have noted the film's lavish look, trolls and memes have been having a field day, too, with jibes at the film and its lead actor Arjun Kapoor.
Arjun feels it is unfair to crack jokes on historical characters and martyrs who laid their lives down for the country. In the historical drama, based on the third Battle of Panipat, Arjun Kapoor plays Sadashivrao Bhau, the great Maratha warrior who had fought Afghan invader Ahmad Shah Abdali.

Srijit Mukherji is unarguably the most prolific filmmaker of contemporary Bengali cinema. He switches from intimate human portraits to wide-canvassed bio-pics with the ease and fluency of a pro.
This time it's the controversial nature of Subhas Chandra Bose's life and death that occupies his creative spectrum. Based on the controversial Mukherjee Commission Hearings, the film fuses a fictional Orson Welles-inspired hero who, like Citizen Kane, sets out to uncover the truth about the death of Netaji, with a fund of historical facts that permeate imminently into the narrative.
It is a fascinating character study of an obstinate leader determined to free India from foreign rule, though the film is not fully freed of foreign influences. Ironically, Anirban Bhattacharya as the Netaji-obsessed journalist Chandrachur Dhar gets much more footage than Bose, who is played by the redoubtable Prosenjit Chatterjee as a cheerless (didn't Netaji ever smile?), stoic, mumbling...
