It is movies like Chief Daddy that encourage young men to aspire to be wealthy solely for the end of acquiring as many tasty women as they possibly can.

Yes, I do not like this movie, and apart from the fact that I am also a teacher and have studied humans in their most natural and undiluted form, and can see how people in general can easily become whatever they are or will be, this movie is simply disturbing!

Thankfully, it has a few lessons to teach, which hopefully are not clouded by the intoxicating shows of grandeur to misguided viewers.

It is difficult to believe TIFF screened this movie in 2017; it must have been out of charity and a huge dose of networking. The movie seriously is lacking in depth and originality.

I have witnessed a number of scathing reviews about this movie – about how it does not make much sense and bull. These make me wonder about the level of intelligence of our Nigerian movie watchers. What did you expect?! The Wedding Party (1) had no proper story, depth or compelling leads for a sequel, but one was made which turns out to have an actual story and a myriad of depth. So what’s really the issue?

26. 10 Days in Sun City (2017)

87 min | Adventure, Comedy, Romance

A globetrotting traveler, Akpos, brings his girlfriend to the land of South Africa in this adventure.

Director: Adze Ugah | Stars: Gbenro Ajibade, Ali Baba, Fathia Balogun, Jaun de Jager

Votes: 80

In this movie, Bianca (Adesuwa Etomi) is nothing but a damsel in distress (and also a bimbo); Otunba Williams (R.M.D), nothing but the usual over-privileged business mogul, as Akpos (AY) himself fails to be saved by his own supposedly witty goof.

In this movie, Sun City is nothing but a tourist city, and Monica (Mercy Johnson) and Falz are nothing but pointless fillers.

Stereotypes from past world movies, and AY’s as well.

Are these enough to say that this 2017 movie is nothing but mind-numbing?

27. Desecration (2017)

An extramarital affair threatens Dr. Daniels' perfect family when his free-spirited conquest wants more and would go to great lengths to achieve it.

Director: Niyi Towolawi | Stars: Jane Adetona, Angel Agala, Rychardo Agbor, Lola Aina

Votes: 25

Desecration is an intense and heartfelt tale about marriage and infidelity, and takes on many exotic dimensions in its establishment of conflict and resolution – only, if it were produced in, like, 2001. That is, like, long before any of the better movies of Tyler Perry came into existence in this genre. Without much ado, we shall see to it that this movie is properly broken down with the hope that we are able to come up with some real good....

Prior to watching Okafor’s Law, an industry friend had confirmed to me that he had watched the movie. He also had an interesting opinion of it, as he messaged me his observation: “It’s a clichéd mess of other clichéd messes that Matthew McConoughey did in the early 2000s”. Turns out, after watching this excessively hyped movie, that he is not far from the truth. But, hey, aren’t romantic comedies all almost like the same? A lot of them also dabble into this same concept of a guy and three girls and his final choice amongst them. Oh, how I love Definitely, Maybe (2008).

Asides these, the major impression Okafor’s Law makes for me is that it lives off already existing plots, which is fine anyway, but it fails to establish its own identity, despite the obvious attempt in branding it Okafor’s Law, and this is due to lack of story depth, and in some areas, sense....

Right off the bat, Ayamma gives the impression of being promising, especially as its opening scene is done in the same vein of that of The Sound of Music (1965). However, in no time, it loses its reputation as anything worth the while, as it, almost immediately, also appears to imitate another of this movie’s concept: Mother Superior’s complaints of “how d’you solve a problem like Maria”.

It also becomes increasingly glaring that this filmmaker makes no plans to situate properly ideas that appear to have been adopted from a number of legends.

Ayamma tries so hard to be something great, yet fails to be anything straight. It is so all over the place.

30. Oloibiri (2015)

TV-MA | 93 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

Based on True Events. A story about the 1st oil well drilled in Nigeria and how the impact has affected a small Nigerian Delta Village( Oloibiri) and the lives of those involved.

Director: Curtis Graham | Stars: Olu Jacobs, Richard Mofe-Damijo, William R. Moses, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett

Votes: 195

There is a noticeable effort with a part of Nollywood to create better scripts for ultimately better movies. These days, you now get to perceive, in movies, genuine intellectual efforts: the implementation of cultural clash and shock, and a sort of cause-and-effect technique, as can be seen in Oloibiri movie.

Only, this is a Western filmmaker, and should do better, right?

A screenplay is a highly technical material. Generally, the more you try to advance its quality, the costlier the mistakes you make – the higher you climb, the harder you fall, eh?

Funny, if one asked this filmmaker, he might claim that the script was deliberated upon for over a year. That would be quite disheartening, as the loads of left-over errors prove he might have only been patching a terminally ill baby for far too long.

Seated silently, in the movie chart of every cinema is this unsuspicious, and surprisingly brilliant movie, It’s Her Day. Unfortunately, it reigns at a time when other overtly raved movies—unbefitting too—exist. It is a considerably well-thought-out movie undeserving of the miserly attention it has ever received from the Nigerian media.

Had this movie a better budget: finishing, picture quality, sound, lighting, camera angling and scene transitioning, it could get lucky at landing a swell international distribution deal. It’s that insightful.

It’s Her Day is not Nollywood’s breakthrough movie (hell no); it’s got many flaws as well, but the movie brings with it great hopes that Nollywood is getting closer to where it’s meant to be in terms of analytical creativity, and in the world map of movies.

32. A Trip to Jamaica (2016)

98 min | Comedy, Drama

Two recently engaged Nigerians get taken on a trip to Jamaica by the bride's sister and wealthy brother-in-law.

Director: Robert Peters | Stars: Ayo Makun, Funke Akindele, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Dan Davies

Votes: 74

A trip to Jamaica is a thoroughly enjoyable and humorous movie that travels the locations Lagos to the United States to Jamaica.

It makes use of loads of conflicts, and Nse Ikpe Etim does a good job creating tension with her character’s multiple emotional meltdowns.

The movie sets situations that generally lead to a comic relief. But do these situations sit well on a theme based storyboard? Are they progressive, and do they contribute to the general well-being of the plot? Do the characters resonate with the audience? Would the spoken words be appreciated beyond the borders of Nigeria and West Africa? Does the movie just waste our time in some places, and is it worth the waste? These are important issues worth looking into.

Every writer/director/producer desires to be a part of the making of a complex movie—not your regular kind of movie: the kind that has its audience pondering what’s going on till they later discover the answers; the kind that intentionally leaves loopholes that it later ties up; the kind that suggests that geniuses are on board, and some research had gone down in pre-production.

Yes, The Arbitration movie certainly answers to these claims, however, it is only successful at achieving the “complicated” status, which is a no-no in film.

Complex and Complicated are not the same in film-making, and cannot be used interchangeably. The truth about story-telling is this: the storyline must be kept simple. What should make it complex is the multi-dimensional nature of the characters, and not the story itself. There’s no such thing as a complex storyline, and this movie’s shortcomings major in this aspect.

34. Black November (2012)

TV-14 | 95 min | Action, Crime, Drama

31 Metascore

Inspired by true events, an oil-rich Nigerian community wages war against an oil corporation to protect their land from being destroyed. Rebels kidnap an American oil executive and demand that his corporation end the destruction.

Director: Jeta Amata | Stars: Mbong Amata, Enyinna Nwigwe, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Anne Heche

Votes: 715

Seeing that Black November appears cut out for a more international audience (many American characters), the director probably deemed it fit to include a fact-file at the movie’s introduction. The catch? A probably intended shocker: how 90% of Nigerians live on less than $2 a day; and how the continuous oil spills make Nigeria the most environmentally devastated land in the world (how factual are these, though). It’s a no-brainer that the audience would immediately assume that this movie is going to be about poverty and its cause(s) in Nigeria, and it sure kinda is.

One thing’s certain about Black November: it is generally thematically focused; utterly focused, even. However, when dealing with an international audience (especially American), focus and intention in one area alone is never enough....

Votes: 133

This film-maker is known to be a twists master to many of his Nigerian viewers, because he has always somehow managed to turn a perfectly decent scenario into something exciting and tension-filled. This brilliance in story conception and planning might be good enough for Nigerians so far, however, I think it’s time to break the ice, so that the upcoming film-makers, who idolize this sole concept and do not realize that there’s more, do not make the kind of mistakes that will inhibit their chances at landing prestigious distribution deals internationally in future....

R | 111 min | Drama, Romance

Sisters Olanna and Kainene return home to 1960s Nigeria, where they soon diverge on different paths. As civil war breaks out, political events loom larger than their differences as they join the fight to establish an independent republic.

Director: Biyi Bandele | Stars: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandiwe Newton, Anika Noni Rose, Joseph Mawle

Votes: 2,149 | Gross: $0.05M

I tried my best to follow through with the major messages that could be got from this movie. The more I tried to follow through, the more disappointments I got. A number of themes can be identified in this movie apart from War and its Effects: Love, Familial Expectations, Friendship, Wealth and Business Opportunities, Ethnic Bias, Charity, Academia, Death, and so much more. The script appears to be ambitious in its evaluation of theme, yet not encompassing in such a way that the audience feels nothing experiencing them....

Oloture is a movie presumably told from an eyewitness point of view; from someone who rolls or has been in that circle, or maybe a spy, an investigative journalist like Ehi (Sharon Ooja). You suspect it at first, are surer as the movie carries on, and are completely convinced in the end. Otherwise, it hardly would be so precise.
