101. The Predator (2018)

R | 107 min | Action, Adventure, Horror

48 Metascore

When a young boy accidentally triggers the universe's most lethal hunters' return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled scientist can prevent the end of the human race.

Director: Shane Black | Stars: Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key

Votes: 143,531 | Gross: $51.02M

Date Watched: 14th September 2018 My Rating: 2/5

The Predator is one of 2018's biggest disappointments. What could've been an enjoyably schlocky gore-fest ends up feeling nothing like a Shane Black film, and more like a machine made to set up more sequels.

Peak: #70

102. Hunter Killer (2018)

R | 121 min | Action, Thriller

43 Metascore

An untested American submarine captain teams with U.S. Navy Seals to rescue the Russian president, who has been kidnapped by a rogue general.

Director: Donovan Marsh | Stars: Gerard Butler, Gary Oldman, Common, Linda Cardellini

Votes: 73,669 | Gross: $15.77M

Date Watched: 20th October 2018 My Rating: 2/5

Though competently made and with okay performances, Hunter Killer is all filler and no thriller, with so much of its dialogue consisting of orders being barked into microphones and submarine terminology that it's impossible to care about its story.

Peak: #79

103. Mary Magdalene (2018)

R | 120 min | Biography, Drama, History

48 Metascore

Twelve men heard and spread the message of Jesus. Only one woman understood it.

Director: Garth Davis | Stars: Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tahar Rahim

Votes: 11,568 | Gross: $0.12M

Date Watched: 12th July 2018 My Rating: 2/5

Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix give great performances and the film is well-made, but Mary Magdalene is ultimately uncompelling, and despite being 2 hours long, feels as long as Lawrence of Arabia, and not in a good way.

Peak: #41

104. I Feel Pretty (2018)

PG-13 | 110 min | Comedy, Romance

48 Metascore

A woman struggling with insecurity wakes from a fall believing she is the most beautiful and capable woman on the planet. Her new confidence empowers her to live fearlessly, but what happens when she realizes her appearance never changed?

Votes: 57,265 | Gross: $48.80M

Date Watched: 4th May 2018 My Rating: 2/5

Amy Schumer's performance is completely and utterly tone-deaf, with the rest of the film following suit.

Peak: #30

105. The Darkest Minds (2018)

PG-13 | 104 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

39 Metascore

Director: Jennifer Yuh Nelson | Stars: Amandla Stenberg, Mandy Moore, Bradley Whitford, Harris Dickinson

Votes: 36,103 | Gross: $12.70M

Date Watched: 10th August 2018 My Rating: 1.5/5

The Darkest Minds is a film that feels like it should have come out 5 years ago, serving as Dystopia 101, with poor direction, a weak lead performance from Amandla Stenberg, a waste of a distinguished supporting cast, questionable music choices and very obvious sequel-baiting. It does however, make for the best unintentional comedy of the year.

Peak: #56

106. The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)

PG-13 | 102 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

37 Metascore

Orbiting a planet on the brink of war, scientists test a device to solve an energy crisis, and end up face-to-face with a dark alternate reality.

Director: Julius Onah | Stars: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo, Daniel Brühl, John Ortiz

Votes: 113,065

Date Watched: 23rd June 2018 My Rating: 1.5/5

Despite looking far more than its $45 million production budget, and a cast consisting of underrated talent including Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo and Chris O'Dowd, The Cloverfield Paradox is a thuddingly boring watch, with characters who only spout technobabble, weak attempts at horror and a shoehorned connection to Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Peak: #39

107. Book Club (I) (2018)

PG-13 | 104 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

53 Metascore

Four lifelong friends have their lives forever changed after reading 50 Shades of Grey in their monthly book club.

Votes: 32,487 | Gross: $68.57M

Date Watched: 10th June 2018 My Rating: 1.5/5

Book Club is just a 105 minute long advertisement for the Fifty Shades books, with an ridiculously talented cast wasted on an embarrasing screenplay mostly consisting of sexual innuendos.

Peak: #36

108. Venom (2018)

PG-13 | 112 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

35 Metascore

A failed reporter is bonded to an alien entity, one of many symbiotes who have invaded Earth. But the being takes a liking to Earth and decides to protect it.

Director: Ruben Fleischer | Stars: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze

Votes: 538,722 | Gross: $213.52M

Date Watched: 5th October 2018 My Rating: 1/5

It's baffling that Venom exists in this state, but I'm very much glad it does. The film feels like it came from the mid-2000s in all the best worst ways, with some moments so bizarre they have to be seen to be believed.

Peak: #80

109. Peter Rabbit (2018)

PG | 95 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

51 Metascore

A rabbit sneaks into a garden to steal food, and they get a new challenge with a new owner.

Directors: Michael Spierig, Peter Spierig | Stars: Helen Mirren, Sarah Snook, Finn Scicluna-O'Prey, Jason Clarke

Votes: 36,766 | Gross: $25.09M

Date Watched: 22nd December 2018 My Rating: 1/5

Zzz… Despite its fascinating true story, Winchester is a plodding and uneventful horror film which barely elicits a mild gasp. Zzz...

Peak: #100

111. Midnight Sun (2018)

PG-13 | 91 min | Drama, Romance

38 Metascore

A 17-year-old girl suffers from a condition that prevents her from being out in the sunlight.

Director: Scott Speer | Stars: Bella Thorne, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Rob Riggle, Quinn Shephard

Votes: 36,140 | Gross: $9.56M

Date Watched: 23rd December 2018 My Rating: 1/5

Midnight Sun is a woefully manipulative entry in the sad-teenage-illness-romance canon, which despite performers who are clearly trying, is dimmed by a laughable screenplay and a horribly inaccurate portrayal of XP.

Peak: #100

112. Status Update (II) (2018)

PG-13 | 106 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Romance

Uprooted by his parents' separation, teenager Kyle Moore is unable to fit into his new hometown until he stumbles upon a magical app that makes his social-media updates come true, changing his entire life.

Director: Scott Speer | Stars: Ross Lynch, Olivia Holt, Harvey Guillén, Courtney Eaton

Votes: 6,245

Date Watched: 1st December 2018 My Rating: 1/5

Status Update is aggressively unfunny and out of touch in its depiction of the internet and modern American high-school, with almost its entire cast either being miscast for their parts or extremely annoying.

Peak: #96

113. The Happytime Murders (2018)

R | 91 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

27 Metascore

When the puppet cast of a '90s children's TV show begin to get murdered one by one, a disgraced LAPD detective-turned-private eye puppet takes on the case.

Votes: 30,387 | Gross: $20.71M

Date Watched: 28th August 2018 My Rating: 0.5/5

A waste of an idea, cast and puppeteers, The Happytime Murders represents the absolute lowest point of comedy in 2018. Avoid it at all costs.

Peak: #67

114. Show Dogs (2018)

PG | 92 min | Adventure, Comedy, Crime

31 Metascore

Max, a macho, solitary Rottweiler police dog is ordered to go undercover as a primped show dog in a prestigious Dog Show, along with his human partner, to avert a disaster from happening.

Director: Raja Gosnell | Stars: Will Arnett, Ludacris, Natasha Lyonne, Stanley Tucci

Votes: 5,070 | Gross: $17.74M

Date Watched: 27th December 2018 My Rating: 0/5

Show Dogs will leave anyone who cares for cinema as an art form barking up the wrong tree, with awful writing, lazy CGI work and a cast who all look like they've been abducted, especially Will Arnett. How Raja Gosnell is still getting work is utterly beyond me.

Peak: #106
