Bergerac: All for Love (1991)
A poor end to a wonderful series
After five long seasons suffering the intolerant nag that was Susan Young, we are graced with the wonderful Thérèse Liotard as Danielle. Liotard is mostly under utilized for all of season 9, only to be tossed under the bus without cause in the final episode. Having fed us that paper thin plot device, Jim then falls off the wagon and succumbs to the advance of a femme fatale only slightly more interesting than the drab Susan Young. As an added bonus, we get a return of Jim's ex-wife, who has been largely absent for most of the series to the extent that >no one really cares<. A sorely disappointing conclusion to an otherwise fantastic series. Not even an exaggeratedly sadistic Bill Nighy can save this mess.
Bridgerton (2020)
Good actors gone bad
Why is it that when faced with a bad production so many will attack with the accusation of 'bad acting'? The acting in Bridgerton is more than adequate and far from the worst this production has to offer. The cinematography, lighting and general set design also all hold up reasonably well. But the direction is clearly suspect and the script........ If only this script had been directed as a blazingly farcical parody Bridgerton might have something to offer beyond an embarrassment of the period genre. I look forward to the MST3K treatment, only then will Bridgerton have found its proper venue.
Blue Thunder (1983)
Lookout overhead
The Cold War and The War on Drugs collide over troubled LA in this 1980's action film. If that sounds exciting and/or confusing, never fear, as that's just the back drop. After the film muddles around a bit through the messy and improbable plot, it finally gets down to it's confused purpose: Roy Scheider goes rogue in a helicopter. Pity the strong cast can't save the messy, nearly nonsensical plot. But the star improbability goes to Scheider's odd character, who can't seem to decide what sort of hero to be. Is he the conservative patriot, upholding the law against the all the bad racial stereo types of the streets? Or is he the vigilante anti-hero, fighting against the establishment. He starts as the former then becomes the latter, all the while maintaining a very '80's, non-PC disregard for the general civilian population as he tears through Los Angles. Not bad enough to be good, certainly not good enough to be memorable.
