Conan the Barbarian (2011)
Worthless remake and a huge waste of time
Let me make this short and sweet.
This was a summer filled with pointless sequels and remakes, Conan the barbarian was just another one of them. A remake to the 1982 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan this film barley gets close to the charms and quality set up by its predecessor. The film follows Conan from his childhood where he sees his father murdered in front of his eyes and grows up to seek revenge on the men who did it.
Yes this is your typical action movie plot only set up in a mythical land. The movie does start off well-paced with adequate time to set up Conan's childhood and story but after the father is murdered the movie takes a huge downfall. The new Conan (Jason Momoa) growls his dialogue throughout and never has anything important to say, while the rest of the cast cannot pull off even a half decent performance with the villains coming off as corny and plain dumb while the story and mythology gets badly jumbled and the choppy editing lacks any continuity to the action taking place.
The next hour goes by with sword clashing and blood spilling and nothing much else. The action looks big but feels redundant and small while there is only so many times you can see somebody getting stabbed or beheaded. Yet the score is quite good and some scenes are nicely done but really nothing special.
By the end of it, the film and story seems like a long boring video game but only you don't have the controller.
The Breakfast Club (1985)
"You see us as you want to see us"
"You see us as you want to see us"- Brian Johnson
In the genre of High school/coming of age films, The Breakfast club is arguably the best film in it. Detailing the teen angst and problems they go through in high school as never been done in such perfection. From the slow burning start to the beautifully dramatic ending, High school has never been shown like this. Ironically it takes place on a Saturday where five very different students are forced into detention for the entire day.
The quite popular athlete, the popular drama princess, the weird loner, the unhappy academic and the tough guy who doesn't care; these are the stars of the movie. Most people think its cliché to categorize and characterize high school students like this but like it or not these people are there in almost every high school. Trust me I am in one right now.
The movie takes place in this single seemly mind numbing boring day where these students who in normal circumstances wouldn't even go close to each other are forced to interact to pass the time. This is where the movie becomes from good to unforgettable, from barely speaking to each other to finally opening up like they never have before, all this is done with incredible subtlety. Each actor pulls out there character perfectly and there interactions with one and another is nothing more than that. From the witty dialogue to the surprisingly good acting, this film will make you laugh your head off and move you from a hundred different emotions. Anyone who has ever been to a high school will instantly relate to the characters and most probably find themselves in one of them.
Compared to other R rater films this is quite minor. Yeah there is a little drug use and swears but that's just what we go through in that stage of our lives.
Some may argue about how this film stands against the other classics but some thing that anyone has seen this movie before is certain of is that this is definitely the greatest High school/teen film ever made.
Maybe you have been there and done that or maybe or still going through it all but by the end of it, you'll be raising you fist high for The Breakfast Club as well.
Good Will Hunting (1997)
Beautiful Film
The only thing i knew about this movie before i saw it was that it had a lot of swear words in it. I don't really care to see movies I Don't know much about but I decided to give this one a try none the less.
To sum it up in a few words, I was Blown away.
From the acting to The Oscar winning screenplay this movie will touch you in a truly unique way. The movie starts of with Will Hunting (Matt Damon) going through is ordinary day to day life, which is filled with hanging round with his buddies, his part time job as a janitor and brutally beating up jerks. Although is high intelligence is apparent and shown through all this you can't help but wonder whats really wrong with this troubled genius. So after the Math professor of the collage catches him solving some the impossible sums he set for his class, he decides to bail him out from prison (kicking a cop in the crouch will get you there pretty quickly no matter how smart you are). So Will is bailed only under certain conditions which are that he must attained a weekly math class with the professor and meet a psychiatrist twice a week. Although the math classes are working out well, Will is convinced the does not need a psychiatrist and makes sure that all best possible options turn tale and head out the door. Thus the professor his forced to go to his former collage room-mate for help. This is where me meet Robin Williams in his Oscar winning role of a troubled psychiatric with his own troubled past.
This is where the movie lingers on and has we try do go deeper into Will thoughts we find more and more about the other people in his life whom he seems to have a profound effect on. Something people will notice is how Will's problems in his life are not so much different than ours and with Gus Van Sant's brilliantly simply direction it is shown with more heart than you can handle. As Will goes through problems with his love life, his past and what his future hold for him, we realize his life his a potential that all our lives should be. Apart from this each character is superbly distinguished as each play a different role in Will's life which is one of the many fine touches of the screenplay. This movie is almost all dialogue and the dialogue is pretty heavy most times thus not making it appealing to everyone's taste (which movie really is) but I highly recommend it as it one of the few movies that by the end of it you'll either smile or cry because you will look back at your life in truly different way.
Before Sunrise (1995)
Brilliant Film
I saw this movie while browsing through channels and was lucky enough to catch the opening credits. This movie is not popcorn film nor is it funny or complex. Yet I have never seen a movie more Honest, truthful and real in my entire life. It may not be the best movie I ever seen but its up there with the best romance movies. I am not going into any major detail here but frankly there not much MAJOR detail to discuss actually. The entire movie is about a man who meets a woman on train and after decide to spend the entire day since they enjoy just other company.
Don't be let down; this is one of the finest movies ever written from the characters to the confrontations everything acted perfectly and genuinely. Directed well with a beautiful ending. This movie may not be everyone's favorite but I recommend watching this you're your girlfriend/wife or Absolutely alone without interruptions. This Film will move you and teach you that life is meant for living and not writing movie reviews on the internet.
