Sex Tape (2014)
Another stupid comedy
I saw the trailer to this film a few weeks back and thought "what a load of rubbish". We arrange to hook up with a few friends and turns out they've seen the film we wanted to watch (lets be cops) and we've seen the film they wanted to watch (the hundred foot journey) so we ended up deciding on sex tape*.
So I went into this film with very low expectations and it started off with a pretty cringeworthy intro with Diaz reading her personal blog entry about sex and how she and her partner had loads of it, it was pretty stupid and didn't really add much. But there were some laughs in there at the stupidity of it. So I settled in thinking right, forget the story just enjoy the silly laughs and so I did. This film has brainless laughs throughout it surprised me that it wasn't as bad as I was expecting it to be and I actually enjoyed watching it moreso than I have a few other recent comedies that I was really looking forward to.
I think if you are going to dissect this film you'll be at it for years, it's terrible. However, for brainless laughs and a bit of awkward comedy it's great; take that mindset when watching and it's quite enjoyable. Don't be expecting brilliance, but it's OK.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
One of my favourite movies!
Haven't really got a bad word to say on this movie, the first time I watched it I was more and more confused as the film evolved and the story unwrapped. It was not till the very end that you had that "ah, I get it now" feeling and for me, thats what I love in a movie, where you cannot predict the storyline. This is a true great and a pioneering movie in the way it was directed and put together. I love the way that tarrentino has chopped the stories into smaller pieces that all inter-link with one another and its not till the very end that you think back and understand how the individual sections interlinked. The characters were great and very well acted out, the story line kept you interested right till the end and the film was pure brilliance! In a class of its own, this is a true cult classic, thoroughly enjoyable, worth a watch any day of the week. On my shelf of top favourite films, don't have a bad word to say!
The Departed (2006)
A true great, I loved every minute of this great film!
In my list of favourite films ever (I don't believe that you can have just one true favourite film, but a select few!) This movie was simply brilliant, great acting, great directing, great production, and most important (for me) a truly great storyline which left you clinging to your seat right to the very end. A "I didn't see that coming" sort of movie, very well directed, quite difficult to follow the first time round till the very end, but gets better every time you watch it. Have seen it many times now and it just doesn't get boring, with Jack Nickleson in, how can it be a bad film? For me, he made the movie, and I thought he has done a great job of acting out a true gangster character.
For me this is what Cinema is all about!
Domino (2005)
In the category "worst movies ever" or "switch off after 10mins"
What utter rubbish, this film is badly casted, Kiera Knightly is totally the wrong person to use for this role, its a bad movie, and I watched 20mins before I couldn't take any more torture and found something interesting to do! If you like a lot of swearing with a bad soundtrack and bad acting along with bad directing (what was all with the flashing clips - made it very distracting and unpleasant to watch - which is why this style will never be done again and has never been done before).
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY! This film has a place my rubbish films bin, ...definatley one for the garbage can!
American Gangster (2007)
An entertaining movie, but not a great movie
Top points for acting, directing and production, Russell Crowe was very good and portrayed his character very well, although agreed with other comments that the additional character building scenes with his wife and son were not required. Denzel Washington was good, but as with Denzel, I find that his acting is very much the same in every movie I've watched with him, although I do like his style so it worked well for me. In my opinion, I found that his style of acting for this character was identical to when he played the boxer in "The Hurricane".
However, I worked out the storyline within 10 minutes of the film, but even so, the way it was done kept you interested in how the story would unfold which I found interesting, As films go, its entertaining, definitely worth watching, its not a great film, but it is good! However, I will have to read up on Frank Lucas to see how close the story came to telling the truth.
