Without Remorse (2021)
Book to Film Similarities
Character John Kelly (SEAL) wants to avenge the death of Pam. Also his wife and unborn child are killed. In movie it's the same person.
Works an overseas operation with Robert Ritter.
There's A Greer in it...
Fakes his death to work with the CIA.
I have been as vague as possible to try to pad this review out with as many "similarities" as possible.
Honourable mention - a plot to set Russia and America against each other... Kinda ripped off from Sum of All Fears. Ish.
If this movie was under any other name I'd call it passable popcorn fare worthy of maybe 4 stars. But by trying to pretend it is what it isn't... it loses them.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Darkside? Pah! More like a youngling!
I was somewhat disappointed with this movie. It was entertaining and worth a watch, but I was left somewhat unfulfilled. And here's why.
Now I'm not a comic book fan, though some of my friends are. The general impression they gave me was that Venom twisted things and gave them an evil tint. I was expecting Peter Parker to go a bit dark side. A bit Evil. Instead, he went Emo.
The fringe was the ultimate giveaway. I felt like slapping him. More worryingly, I felt that if I did, I'd get away with it. Spiderman wouldn't fire web at me - the only thing liable to come out of his wrists would be blood as he went off to write a song about my meanness.
I know you aren't supposed to like the guy when he's venomous, but I still wanted to respect him. Instead I hated him and thought him laughable. He annoyed the hell out of me. And that is not a good opinion to hold about the hero.
Sandman was neither here nor there really, and the guy who took over as Venom was equally annoying and unconvincing as spiderman. The only decent villain in the film was Harry.
Harry managed to hurt spiderman more than the others combined. In fact more than probably any of the other villains from the franchise combined. He, I respected. And when it came to the finale and he had to choose whether to fight fir or against spiderman, I was so unimpressed with the other 3 that I was following Harry all the way. Whichever side he picked is the side I was supporting, and that was the consensus opinion among my friends.
Quite frankly he had to die. Otherwise there would DEFINITELY not be a spiderman 4. There would have been a Harry Osborne spin off instead, and I get the feeling the studio didn't want to explore that direction. It's a shame. After being lame for 2 movies, Harry came good. I'd pay to see a Harry movie. Another spiderman - I'm not yet convinced.
The New Statesman (1987)
Fantastic boxset, but am I missing something?
I own the complete New Statesman box set and think it is absolutely brilliant. Alan B'Stard is riotous and his ability to find a profit in any venture is often hilarious. I do have one question though, and wonder could anyone answer it.
While browsing this excellent site I saw the complete list of episodes for the New Statesman. The episode "Alan B'Stard closes down the BBC" is not on my "complete New Statesman" box set. Was this not an official episode? Why is it not included? I unfortunately was too young to appreciate this show when it first aired so have no idea if it was just a charity special or anything like that. I have always assumed that the episode "Who shot Alan B'Stard" was a one-off, though without giving too much away there is no way they couldn't include that episode on the boxset without raising too many questions.
So, overall the show is brilliant, and if anyone can tell me what happened to this lost episode I'd appreciate it. Thanks for reading this.
PS I didn't really know where else to put this question, so put it in here with my praise.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
Will - what a plank!
Now there are many reviews posted declaring this pirates to be the greatest/worst movie ever filmed, but I am going to focus on something narrower. For what it's worth, I enjoyed the film, despite a couple of minor disappointments.
First and foremost - how did Will get Liz? Now it's been clear from the last film that she was tempted by Jack but at the same time often repulsed by him. Will was nowhere near as exciting, but he is honest and dependable. Well not any more! She went to the locker to rescue Jack because she felt guilty, while Will went with every intention of betraying him once again! Quite frankly when Will turned "nasty" he lost the only plausible claim he may have had on Elizabeths heart.
Second - further complaints about Will I'm afraid, maybe Orlando fans had better turn away. What a selfish so-and-so! He's only going to see Elizabeth one day every 10 years. Now 10 years ain't too long if you're immortal - Liz ain't. Given the average life expectancy at the time she's probably got a weeks worth of visits tops. She's going to wait her entire life for one good week? He should have let her go - she could have continued her career as the pirate queen. She could, if she wanted to, have gone for Jack. Instead she gets left holding the baby waiting for Will to come visit once again.
Finally, this isn't a complaint, just my 2 cents worth. People think there will be a 4th just because Jack has the map for the fountain of youth. They may well do another one, but don't assume they will based on that alone. It's Captain Jack Sparrow! Savvy! Bring him that horizon. They couldn't possibly leave him with a happily ever after. He has to have another adventure in store, whether we see it or not. Knowing he's off on them is good enough for me. And that's without a single drop of rum!
Clerks II (2006)
Hasn't he learned anything?
Clerks 2 is an excellent film, and there are many reviews already that can do it far more justice than I can. But I wanted to chuck in my 2 cents about something that absolutely infuriated me in the film, though I suppose it was supposed to.
At the end of clerks Dante gets a severe dressing down from Randell about moaning about his life yet not doing anything to change things. Yet here we are 12 years down the line and he's still being a complete fool, and once again Randell has to set him on the straight and narrow. Didn't he learn at all from the first movie? The fact that towards the end of the film he was still considering going to Florida, AFTER having said what he said to Becky (I'm trying to be subtle in case you haven't seen it) I felt like walking in and slapping him. Luckily for him, Randell talks some sense into him (and presumably, never mentions the fact that he had to around Becky, ever, for the rest of his natural life!) and we have the happy ending the audience wanted. But will it stick this time?
I've seen calls for a clerks 3 in another 10 years. Will Dante be happy then? Or will he still be sat there moaning about everything. Maybe the marriage has gone sour, or the government are giving him too much paperwork as a small businessman. He'll whine and moan for 90 minutes, before Randell finally slaps some sense into him. (No doubt after keeping the audience entertained deriding the movie of the Hobbit and lionising the contractors who were destroyed in Star Wars 7, 8 and 9.) As brilliant as Kevin Smiths work is, I can't help but hate Dante. He has a decent life, some excellent women, and a best friend many of us could only dream of having, yet he doesn't appreciate it. Would he be happier in the office job? I know i wouldn't.
