Dogville (2003)
What I got myself into...an unbelievable film.
When I went into the movie theater to see this film I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. All I knew was that "Dogville" had Nicole Kidman in it- an actress I have always liked- and Lars von Trier, a director I have always respected. I was quickly surprised by what the film was. Set entirely on a stage/sound stage I couldn't believe my eyes. As a theatre actor it was exciting to see how this all was going to work out. Dogville did not disappoint. Lars von Trier clearly creates a town that may seen ordinary and odd into masterful. Nicole Kidman was excellent and the supporting cast was flawless. It was great to see Lauren Bacall and I enjoyed her performance. When I first saw Paul Beattany in the film all I could think of was the awful film "A Knight's Tale" that he is also in. However he proved me wrong in his well developed character. Patricia Clarkson was great in her role as Vera, she is a stunning actress. If she keeps getting these great roles an Oscar is sure to be in her future. The film on the whole is wonderful. My only complaint was the length. Around the 2 hour mark I was getting kind of antsy, but the film brought me back to finish the roller coaster ride that the film gave. Truly an original. Go see it.
The Life of David Gale (2003)
Has its weak points, but still an excellent film.
Wow! This truly is a movie to remember. The script can sometimes be rocky, and the music over powering, but the acting from Kate Winslet, Kevin Spacey, and Laura Linney is superb. These three actors strut their acting abilities with this film. "Life of David Gale" kept me nervous till the last seconds, where the final twists take place. It blew me away, and it left my stomach in knots for several hours after the film. I strongly recommend anyone to see the film!
Iris (2001)
Flawless Performances!
Wow! That is little I can say about the wonderful performances from the four lead actors and actresses. I now see why Jim Broadbent won an Oscar for his performance. I am surprised though that Judi Dench did not win because her acting showed through the most. It had to have been so difficult to play a character like Iris Murdoch with so much depth that you felt with her falling apart that you were also collasing. Kate Winslet's work on the film was very good as well. It is impressive to see the great films that she is doing after her stardom in Titanic. It is good to know that some actors/actresses have some sense to go with the movies with real characters and feelings instead of always doing the flat blockbusters. An actor I hadn't heard of before, Hugh Bonneville also showed through in this masterful movie. I would be interested to see more of his work as well. He gave a strong picture of the innocence of the young John Bayley...and then Jim Broadbent topped it all of with his fantastic work in the film. From doing Moulin Rouge to this, he has gotten a very good looking resume. Truly flawless performances all around.
The Time Machine (2002)
It was worth the wait.
I have been excited to see this movie for a while, since it got backed up a couple months, but it was worth the wait. The script was a little rocky at the beginning but once the time travel starts it became really spectacular. I thought that the visual effects were well used. From the preview the visual effects didn't look that good, but when you are in the theatre watching the film they show their impressiveness, if that is a word. The acting was very strong from Guy Pearce and Samantha Mumba. Yes, that is Samantha Mumba the singer, now also actress. I think she has a very promising acting career ahead of her. I would recommend this film to all ages and I would be more than willing to see the film again.
Hamlet (1996)
A fantastic story
When I first saw the film, I was amazed by the wonderful acting. It was truly a gripping version that I fell in love with again. It was superb. It is absolutely a movie that you have to see more than once. I would surely see it over again myself as I have seen it more than once. Branagh is a great actor as he was in Much Ado About Nothing and Othello. He is one of the best Shakespearean actors of our time. A must see!
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
One of the greatest movies ever!
The Wizard of Oz is truly one of the greatest movies ever made. You can watch it over and over again and never get tired of the film. Judy Garland's fabulous performance just tops it all off. I can't see anyone else playing Dorothy. The casting director was right on top of every role! This is a movie not to be missed! It easily goes into my top 5 of the best movies ever.
