Star Trek: Discovery (2017–2024)

Destruction of a franchise
25 September 2017
I've watched all Star Trek series multiple times and this is not Star Trek. It's very obvious the writers of this show are hijacking it and trying to make it into Disney era Star Wars and fill it with unnecessary propaganda. Story will not come first.

This show is so unwatchable and I'll just write if off as a fraud and illegitimate canon and pretend like it didn't happen and remember fondly the previous Star Trek series. And why shouldn't Star Trek die, since all the creators are dead. SO it's just corporate shills in controls of the franchise and they're hiring propagandist hacks, run the show.

Not a lot of series questioned answered, but it sets up part two
9 June 2011
This is part one of basically a two part movie. Not a lot of the 'mythology' is answered in part one, it's more about being in New York City. I'd say the animation is slightly better than the series animation. The first half of the movie is slower because it's all about getting the principles back together and getting them up to speed, so the second half is when we start to progress the story and get back to the game. When the film ends and they head back to Japan in part two.

It's part two when basically everything is answered, Takizawa's mother and how they separated, the voices behind Juiz, why Takizawa was picked for the game, the game ends,Mr. Outside, The supporter, Saki, etc. Also in part two at the END of the credits, there is one new scene that addresses an issue from the series.

Columbo: Columbo Goes to College (1990)
Season 10, Episode 1
9/10
One of the better post 1989 episodes
12 June 2005
I felt that way when I saw the episode in its original run and still agree when I watch it on reruns. You had the culprits totally mocking Columbo throughout the episode and treating him like he has down syndrome. And in the end you see their shock when Columbo gets them dead to rights and arrest them. You also get a realistic reaction from the arrogant preppy killers. They stillcouldn't give Columbo his props and say he just got lucky. I like the formula where there is an elaborate crime, the killer(s) totally underestimate Columbo, and then you get their realization that Columbo was totally playing the criminals. I recall in the first few episodes of the post 1989 episodes they weren't following that formula and this was the first episode that I was pleased with.

Bait and Switch
2 February 2005
Warning: Spoilers
If you see the trailer and think you are going to see one type of movie. Be prepared for a bait and switch. You're not going to see the standard movie about the rise or struggle of a female prize fighter. The movie is going to take a huge left turn during the last 45 minutes and basically just be a disease of the week type of film. The film has little to do with boxing during the last 45 minutes. It's more a thinly veiled infomercial for advocating embryonic stem cell research and assisted suicide.

The acting is great and the directing is fine, but just be prepared to have a depressing time at the movies.

uplifting movie

Another great Miyazaki film. A young witch, with a good heart, leaves her mom and dad on her 13th birthday with her black cat, as all witches are supposed to do to complete her training and make it on her own. She looks for a city in need of a witch and finds a city near an ocean. She meets some other good hearted people who help her along the way.

There really isn't a villain in the movie and it's mainly a slice of life type of film. In the end of the film it all comes together and she performs a heroic act.

I tried to watch the dubbed version. Dunst was fine, but I just couldn't stand Garofolo and Hartman. So set the DVD audio to the original Japanese soundtrack and used English subtitles.

If you watch the dubbed version. Turn on the subtitles and you will see all the additional dialog they added. They just couldn't help padding their roles, especially Hartman.

Shark Tale (2004)

From the creators of Father of the Pride. Nof funny
12 January 2005
The CGI is fine, but this was just terrible. Kids will be bored and adults will cringe. I'm all for suspension of disbelief but why is it a given that Fish live in an underwater city with apartment buildings, televisions, movies and cell phones. They didn't even try to explain it. Usually you'll get the Flintstones kind of logic to explain cars, etc. I can understand if they make references to movies by slipping it in dialog a la Shrek. . But it is basically understood in the film that they actually watched the movies they are quoting. That's just lame. Why are they singing 'Car Wash' at the end of the movie? Oscar worked in a Whale Wash. But even forgetting that they don't even bother to be creative the story is just tedious. This is just some a scam film they can lure you in with the pedigree of big name stars doing the voices and the studio's past success with the Shrek franchise. But this film is closer to the humor of the flop TV show from Dreamworks 'Father of the Pride.' It sucks. 1/10

No wonder this film was a flop...
9 February 2003
I finally saw K-19 and it was just a mediocre film. I cannot understand how this film got 'green lighted'. To pony up Harrison Ford's 20 million dollar a picture salary to get this story on the big screen is such a waste.

Who wants to cheer for the 'evil empire' at the height of the cold war. I agree that human emotions are human emotions, and that is why I still watched the film. But even that part was lacking and all that was left was the so called tension of whether the evil Americans get a hold of K-19 or will the CCCP get there in time rescue them. Who gives a rats as$. I was cheering them for them to sink. No wonder this film only made $35 million after it cost $135 million to produce and market. It's a rare Harrison Ford flop.

This is just another film made by the liberal Hollywood film community. They think they have the 'spin' to make heroes out of anybody. Just from a marketing standpoint this film didn't have a chance. I give it a bad review because the story was just boring; they milk what should be a 90 minute movie into 150 minutes.

The Germans are evil people

We must never forget that. Even the German officer at the end of the film wanted some payback for showing an ounce of humanity.

He manages to escape and a few of his former Polish associates hide him out in a apartment. So, for most of the second half of the film you see the Warsaw Ghetto uprising through his window as he sneaks a peak. So for about two years he spends his time in a comfy apartment. Szpilman didn't pad his role. He had it better that most jews and because of his talent people wanted to keep him alive.

Pretty straight forward for a Lynch film
26 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** I don't see why there is any confusion about this film. We see throughout the film a few glimpses of reality, but most of it is a dream. And like a dream, the dreamer will get an idealized version of themselves and people they know in real life will play different parts. Near the end of the film you get the 'real' story of what is going on. Spoiler. The plot is Diane/Betty character commits suicide because she ordered a hit on Rita/Camilla. We don't know if the hit was successful or a figment of Diane's imagination. We just know that Diane commits suicide. Diane probably just wanted to be like "Rita" she got the parts that Diane wanted to get and Rita/Camilla was going to marry the famous director. Were Diane and Camilla former lovers? The masturbation scene opens it up for a debate. It seems Diane was a borderline stalker and a failed actress.

Whatever the case unlike the 'Twin Peak's' television show when DL was making it up as he went along. There is a complete story somewhere in this film.

Titan A.E. (2000)
Rip off of Star Wars characters, great animation
9 December 2001
This movie is worth watching for the breathtaking animation, but the story is very weak. There isn't anything original in the script, it three main leads are carbon copies of the three main characters in Star Wars, in a Battlestar Galactica plot, re-enacting scenes from the Star Wars trilogy and other Sci-fi films. The main villain seem to be based on the queen borg. There is a little Terminator plot 'borrowing' too. Throw in the Lord of the Rings too. But again this film is worth viewing once for the great animation.
