Slow paced but emotional
There is plenty of everything in this show. You experience the trek towards Oregon through the eyes of a young woman who also narrates at the beginning and end of each episode. The series is slow paced but I find it was necessary to show the real struggle and grit of that era. It is amazing that events like these happened only 140 years ago. The acting is spot on and the amazing scenery made me give it a rare 10/10.
Cloud Atlas (2012)
Some great, some not.
It was a movie I hoped would grow on me in retrospect... but hasn't. It felt like nobody else mattered in history apart from the characters being presented.
It has too many story lines, a few which could have made a decent movie on their own. I especially liked the Korean future setting, that had its moments... but even that became a mix of Blade Runner and V for Vendetta without really reaching a climax.
Decent performances though. Tom Hanks brilliant as usual. Hugo Weaving didn't really have a chance to stand out. Gave me some flashbacks to Matrix with the voice too, but that has already been used.
Perhaps it should have aimed to be a mini-series.
Hobo with a Shotgun (2011)
The writers must have had a (shotgun) blast making this manuscript!
Dialogue:
"You can't save the world with a shotgun." "It's the only thing I know."
The writers must have had a (shotgun) blast making this manuscript!
Hehe... this was a breath of "fresh" air. Not been too many splatter movies out lately and this one didn't intend to be more than it was either.
Glad to see one of the cool actors from the 80's back.
I guess with The Hitcher and now this, Rutger Hauer has gone full circle!
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Why I gave this movie a 10 without actually telling anything about the movie!
In my personal opinion this movie is worth a 10/10 - to me! That's why I gave it a 10. *I* feel it is as true to the masterpiece of a book that it can be. To *me* it was a dream come true to finally see pictures of how I imagined middle-earth and the saga of the ring to be.
When I scrolled down the different user comments it baffled me that almost every other post were against this movie, and a lot of it is based on comparison to other "masterpieces". Well who cares! I certainly don't care if you knowitall-homesitting-movie-critics like Citizen Kane and 2001 better than LOTR - FOTR. Some of you are even giving this movie a lower vote than you perhaps initially would, just because it doesn't deserve a place in the top 10 of the movies of all times? Well duh! Perhaps it has the 4th place (currently) because that's how the majority feels about it. They don't follow the politically correct Hollywood we-know-best routine. They follow their hearts and personal opinions. And good for them. Good for all of you that are able to watch a movie and actually say; "This movie meant something to me... I think it is the best film I have ever seen."
Don't you dare give it a lower vote than you think it deserves!
Now I am going to see it again - on DVD - until the special edition comes out - which I will see while awaiting The Two Towers.
Lat sau san taam (1992)
20 bullets per second? Woo Woo (John)
Imaginative and intense action movie by John Woo starring Chow Yun Fat as an asian 'supercop' against asian mobsters.
Has the record for most bullets fired in a movie, breathtaking action sequences and as always a dark and deep character portrayal by Mr Fat.
Made in Hong Kong it contains somewhat excessive violence, not usually seen in American made films. The hospital sequence is a thriller!
Something for people wanting a decent action flick and that are tired of the usual Hollywood productions.
L.A. Story (1991)
A weatherman in LA. Fun? Actually... yes
Steve Martin as a wacky weatherman in LA that falls in love with a British reporter.
Driving one evening on the freeway, Harry Telemacher gets a flat tyre and pulls over by a signpost. The signpost communicates with him (!) and gives him a riddle to solve.
Plenty of amusing situations and interesting places. Music by Enya lifts the movie a few steps.
An overall watchable comedy if you don't expect too much.
Evil Dead II (1987)
Horror slap-stick gore-fest
Ash is back! Unfortunately for him, yet again battling unspeakable evil and demons in a secluded log cabin.
Following the plot of the first Evil Dead movie, our hero now possess some knowledge of the terror he is facing. But will it be enough to save him and the unlucky campers that just happens to drop by?
Evil Dead 2 is not as scary as the first one but makes that up with being hilarious. Experienced movie watchers might know that Sam Raimi is a big fan of The Three Stooges which certainly shows in this movie.
Watch and enjoy! Make sure your television set does not blur from the color red.
Top Secret! (1984)
Watch the world's first submarine-magnet and dig a tunnel with a spoon!
During WW2 a young american pop star played by Val Kilmer is invited as a propaganda stunt to sing in Germany.
This Zucker production is one of the predecessors to the well known Naked Gun and Hot Shots movies. An enormous amount of gags, puns and jokes makes this film a joy to watch over and over again! Did anyone get all the latin words the priest chanted before he went to the death cell? And why is there always a fireplace in the background when there's a romantic scene?
If you like brainless (?) humor this is one to watch!!!
Army of Darkness (1992)
Horror-comedy at it's best!
Our hero Ash is back again. Battling skeletons and demons in medieval time with his shotgun, chainsaw, car and above all his attitude and wit!
Bruce Campbell (from Brisco County Jr.) stars as Ash in this third and for now last of the Evil Dead series. The director Sam Raimi raised his budget just a little making this yet another worthwhile movie in the horror genre.
Personally the movie is such good fun I gave it 8/10. Groovy!!
Aliens (1986)
One to watch!
In space no one can hear you scream, but prepare to do exactly that in your living room! This superb sci-fi experience will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last second.
Surviving the first encounter with an alien lifeform, officer Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is sent back to the now inhabited planet they discovered the alien creature to assist in a possible rescue mission. If you thought one alien was enough you are probably sharing Ripley's view.
Excellent performances by Sigorney Weaver and the rest of the cast make this film a truly satisfying piece of sci-fi history.
Special fans of the genre and Alien series might want to check out the special edition on laserdisc with 16 minutes of extra footage integrated in the movie.
