When online trolls tanked reviews for 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Thomas Eromose Ikimi didn’t get mad, he got inspired.
The fractured response among critics and fans galvanized the filmmaker to create Qurator, a movie review app that allows film enthusiasts to rate and discuss movies without encountering the kind of digital provocateurs that rival sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb have fallen victim to.
“A few years ago I was looking at reviews and I found it very difficult to sift through a rating and decide whether it was accurate,” he told Variety. “I thought that there must be a way of distilling the reactions actual fans would have. That’s what compelled me to look for a solution.”
Ikimi, a computer programmer who directed 2010’s sci-fi thriller “Legacy” with Idris Elba, enlisted Brandon Victor Dixon, best known among theater buffs for “Hamilton” and “Jesus Christ Superstar Live,...

Prince’s estate chooses Ava DuVernay to direct multi-part documentary on the late artist.
"Man, I hate makin' movies," Prince sang on "Movie Star" off his twentieth album Crystal Ball. But he lived his life more cinematically than most musicians or stars of the silver screen. He was also one of the most documented. He has thousands of hours of unreleased songs in a vault, and recorded many with video footage. Ava DuVernay will go through the archives to direct a multi-part Prince documentary on for Netflix, according to Variety. The documentary will cover Prince’s entire life.
DuVernay, who directed Netflix's 2016 private prison exposé 13th, which was nominated for an Oscar for best documentary feature, as well as Selma , Queen Sugar and the upcoming Central Park Five series, has the full cooperation of Prince’s estate, which provided interviews, archival footage, and photos for the project.

Dubois Records, in cooperation with Mammoth Screen and Masterpiece will release the Victoria – Original Soundtrack digitally on all music streaming platforms to coincide with the Us release of the television series on PBS this coming weekend. The album features the limited series’ original score by multi-bafta and Ivor Novello winning composer Martin Phipps (Woman In Gold, The Keeping Room) and Ruth Barrett (City Of Tiny Lights, Whitechapel) with vocals from the Mediaeval Baebes. Victoria was first aired on ITV in the UK on August 28, 2016.
Phipps says: “The idea was to give Victoria a dynamic voice, an explosive theme through which we could rejoice in her strength & courage. The Mediaeval Baebes were the perfect sound for this. With one foot in the classical world & one in the commercial, they gave Victoria the mixture of refinement & attitude I was after.”
Barrett says: “I started composing from episode 2, weaving in some of Martin...

Of all the very many movies that have been spun out into TV series – think 12 Monkeys, 24: Legacy and, er, Minority Report – over the past two years or so, one project that appears ripe for the seralized treatment is Dredd.
Granted, Pete Travis’ high-octane reboot was considered a financial dud when it launched into theaters four years ago, but thanks to an impassioned fanbase and strong home video sales, there remains a flicker of hope that the Karl Urban-led action series could carve out a future of its own. Indeed, just last week the actor himself stoked the embers of excitement by pledging his support, revealing that he’d be willing to don the iconic suit and helmet as Mega-City One’s judge, jury and executioner.
There’s a new wrinkle to the tale, though, now that Urban has teased that “conversations are happening” regarding the possibility of either...

BBC Drama Legacy Review
Foyle’s War, Spies of Warsaw, The Americans . . . the Cold War is all the rage these days with TV executives and tonight BBC2 added another Soviet era spy drama into the mix. Legacy, like the Americans, is set in the 1970s. It tells the tale of Charles Thoroughgood (Charlie Cox) a new recruit at MI6 who is tasked with “turning” a Russian buddy from his college days. Viktor Koslov (Andrew Scott) seems like an easy target until it emerges that he has plans of his own.
The premise is reasonable enough and the cast which also includes Romola Garai (The Hour) is top notch. However, despite some atmospheric filming, fairly good dialogue and a pretty good tempo, Legacy lacked a . . . je ne sais quoi. Part of the problem was obvious. While The Americans looks and feels authentic, Legacy looked like a contemporary show in which the...

Romola Garai has joked that maybe she could be a spy after meeting a former agent who was similar to an actor.
Garai stars as a spy in the Cold War in BBC Two's new one-off drama Legacy, which airs tonight.
She has now revealed that she met a former spy during filming and explained that the nature of his job was in some ways similar to acting.
"He was actually quite a performative person," she said. "I think a lot of our preconceptions that writers and actors and directors rely on are actually probably not true. He was actually quite a flamboyant character. I've always thought I could never do a job like that, but maybe...!
"He was quite gregarious and he told these outrageous stories about missions he'd been involved in. It wasn't quite what I was expecting."
