Anthologies have made something of a comeback in recent years, at least in the horror genre, with films likes of V/H/S and its sequels, the low-budget Theatre of the Deranged and P.O.E.franchises, or films like The Theatre Bizarre and Trick r Treat, which both played at Frightfest events in the past, finding fans acros the globe. However despite this rebirth, the 80s are still the heyday of the horror anthology. Maybe that’s all about to change.
It started with Trick r Treat. For many Michael Dougherty’s film is the standard-bearer of the modern anthology. He did set the bar high, very high, but it seems at this years Frightfest that bar has...

It seems this decade will be known as yet another golden era of the anthology film. We’ve had the likes of The Theatre Bizarre, V/H/S (and its sequel), The ABCs of Death, the indie flicks Theater of the Deranged 1-3 et al., and now comes another one, Xx – this time with the Usp of a completely female directorial roster, including: Jennifer Lynch, Mary Harron, Karyn Kusama, Jen and Sylvia Soska, and Jovanka Vuckovic.
The press release in full:
Mpi/Dark Sky Films and Xyz Films are producing Xx, an all-female horror anthology with segments starring female leads, helmed by female filmmakers.
The companies have assembled an impressive roster: Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena, Chained), Mary Harron (American Psycho, I Shot Andy Warhol), Karyn Kusama (Girlfight, Jennifer’s Body), Jen and Sylvia Soska (known as the Soska sisters with credits including Dead Hooker in a Trunk, American Mary), and Jovanka Vuckovic (The Captured Bird,...

Just in time for Halloween, The Asylum, the studio behind this summer’s social media juggernaut Sharknado, has followed that hit with the final installment of their ‘11/11/11’ horror franchise, called ‘13/13/13.’
‘13/13/13’ is available now on DVD, Blu-ray, and on demand. Written and directed by James Cullen Bressack (Theater Of The Deranged, Hate Crime), the film stars Trae Ireland, Erin Coker, Jody Barton, and Calico Cooper. Erin Coker returns from ‘11/11/11,’ though she does not reprise her role.
In the tradition of horror classics The Hills Have Eyes and The Crazies, ’13/13/13’ blends a demonic possession tale with the end of society as we know it. Its premise is simple and scary: calendars have added an extra day every four years for millennia. In doing so, they violated the ancient Mayan calendar. Now we are in the 13th month of the 13th year of the new millennium, and the few who survive will battle a world of demons.

Pardon my language but… Fuck me! I’ve been a fan of James Cullen Bressack’s work for some time now, ever since that fateful day he sent me an email asking me if I’d like to review his first full-length feature My Pure Joy. Bressack followed that hard-hitting flick with a segment in the first Theatre of the Deranged anthology and the notorious (and totally amazing), Hate Crime. Now in all honesty I though he couldn’t top Hate Crime. After all that film was, at least for me, a perfect mix of story and style – Bressack’s directorial sensibilities fit perfectly with the content and you could tell that everyone involved wanted to make the best movie they could, even given the touchy subject matter.

We’re back this weekend with another edition of the Indie Spotlight. Today, we bring you the first episode of the zombie webseries The Dead Feed, along with the latest independent horror news sent our way:
When Good Holiday’s Go Bad: Rise of the Fiend: “Halloween, that magical night that compels adults to act like children, children to gorge themselves and a host of creatures and ghouls, those nasty beasties that hide under your bed, in your closet or the deepest recesses of your mind, all come out to play, scaring and frightening their human victims; at least, that’s how it was in the old days.
Welcome to Halloween Hallow, a disturbing land where all the nefarious creatures that wander the world on Halloween night come to dwell during the off season. In this land of strange and weird creatures lives Jack, the only human ever allowed to live amongst them.
