Zombies are seemingly everywhere. In addition to anchoring one of the country’s most popular television series in “The Walking Dead,” in just the last 14 months they’ve done big-screen battle with British East-Enders in “Cockneys vs. Zombies,” served as the backdrop for a funky tale of blossoming young love in “Warm Bodies,” been given the John Hughes treatment in “Detention of the Dead,” worked their way into a hijacked indie film production in “Zombie Hamlet,” and chased Brad Pitt to the highest theatrical receipts of his career in the form of “World War Z.” It’s only fitting, then, that they also inspire a tale of obsessive twentysomething romance taken too [ Read More ]

In addition to owning one of the most popular TV series, zombies have, in just the past calendar year, done big-screen battle with Cockneys (“Cockneys vs. Zombies”), served as the backdrop to a funky tale of adolescent self-doubt and blossoming young love (“Warm Bodies”), been given the John Hughes treatment (“Detention of the Dead”), and chased Brad Pitt to the biggest gross of his career (“World War Z”). So it’s only fitting that they also inspire a tale of obsessive love taken too far. That’s part of the core premise of director Joe Dante’s “Burying the Ex,” in which Evelyn (Ashley Greene) doesn’t let the fact that she’s a newly [ Read More ]

First-time writer/director Alex Craig Mann has combined The Breakfast Club with Dawn of the Dead for a different kind of zombie movie. Detention of the Dead is a high school zombie horror-comedy which follows a group of teenagers stuck in detention who are forced to work together when zombies invade their school. All the typical high school archetypes are present including Eddie (Jacob Zachar), a nerd in love with the head cheerleader Janet (Christa B. Allen); Brad (Jayson Blair), Janet's boyfriend and the most popular guy in school; Jimmy (Max Adler), a meathead and Brad's best friend; Willow (Alexa Nikolas), the goth girl in love with Eddie; and Ash (Justin Chon), the school stoner and local drug dealer. After barricading themselves inside the library, they start to talk about why they were in detention, confess their true feelings about each other, and bond while smoking a blunt together.

Director: Alex Craig Mann. Writers: Alex Craig Mann and Rob Rinow. Cast: Jacob Zachar, Alexa Nikolas, Christa B. Allen, Jayson Blair, Justin Chon, Max Adler, Joseph Porter and Michele Messmer. Detention of the Dead is a throwback to films of the '80s. The Breakfast Club (1985) is especially influential in director Alex Craig Mann's first film. The characters are cliches and the zombies are far from terrifying. Instead, Detention of the Dead relies on some silly comedy and high school drama to keep the film's story interesting. But, this story might not be compelling for most film fans. The film is set in Lincoln High School. Here, a zombie virus is ravaging the school's halls and classrooms. The stereotypical: jock (Jayson Blair), cheerleader (Christa B. Allen), nerd (Jacob Zachar), stoner (Justin Chon), goth girl (Alexa Nikolas) and jock #2 must battle their way to the library, because students never go there.

Do you remember all the typical garbage you had to deal with in high school? You had to wear the right clothes, hang out with the right crowd, and get all your homework done so you could pass. All those seem hard enough to handle. Now add to your laundry list of things to do "Escape from my fellow students who have turned into zombies." High School was bad enough before. Imagine having to attend Detention of the Dead.
A nerd, a jock, a cheerleader, a bully, a goth, and a stoner are stuck together in detention. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? It's just a typical afternoon in high school until ravenous zombies overtake the hallways. Now the motley crew of teens must put aside their differences in order to survive a terrifying night of the walking dead.

“See Mom? You can’t be too mad at me for going to detention, it could possibly save me from the zombie apocalypse!” said every troublemaking kid who caught Alex Craig Mann’s newest zom-com, Detention Of The Dead. Playing in a much simpler fashion than last year’s Detention, Mann’s film (which is based on a play by Rob Rinow) feels like a cross between an 80s style high school dramedy and some good old self-aware zombie horror. Basically, if George A. Romero and John Hughes did the nasty, Mann’s film would be the demented product. And yes, I know how babies are made, but that’s just a hypothetical – you get what I’m saying here.
Following a group of stereotypical high school cliches, Detention Of The Dead starts when our group all gather for their after school prison sentence. Unaware of the horrors sweeping across their school,...

It’s definitely the year of the zombies.
After “Warm Bodies” and “World War Z,” a fun zombie comedy sneaks into the theaters with “Detention of the Dead.”
This is a small budget zombie indie film that is a cross between “The Breakfast Club” and “Shaun of the Dead.” It follows a group of high school students stuck in detention as the zombie infection spreads outside the hall.
Latino-Review caught up with “Detention of the Dead” director Alex Craig Mann in person to discuss about the approach with the John Hughes-like story and the traditional slow moving zombie hoard. Mann also even discussed a little about possibly adapting it into a television project.
“Detention of the Dead” is in select theaters today. It is now available on-demand and digitally purchas on Amazon Instant Video, iTunes and Xbox 360.

When Brad Pitt, as a producer-star, tackled the sprawling movie adaptation of Max Brooks’ zombie novel “World War Z,” there was a lot of talk about the zombie genre having reached its apex, and possibly being tapped out. On the other end of the budgetary spectrum, though, is something like debut director Alex Craig Mann’s “Detention of the Dead,” which shows that zombie movies are, pardon the pun, unlikely to die off anytime soon. A high school-set horror comedy — think John Hughes meets “Shaun of the Dead” — the film stars Jacob Zachar, Jayson Blair, Christa Allen, Justin Chon and others in a tale of mismatched teens who have [ Read More ]

Title: Detention of the Dead Director: Alex Craig Mann Starring: Jacob Zachar, Jayson Blair, Christa Allen, Alexa Nikolas, Justin Chon, Max Adler “World War Z” is busy presently chewing up the box office, but there’s another zombie tale out there in theaters as well — one likely shot, quite literally, for the catering budget on Brad Pitt’s film. Putting a “Shaun of the Dead”-like spin on one of filmmaker John Hughes’ beloved teen classics, “Detention of the Dead” centers on an oddball (and at-odds) collection of high school students who find themselves trapped in detention while all their classmates and teachers outside have turned into zombies. There are few staples in the horror genre than have endured, and been reinvented as often, as the zombie. Since George A. Romero's groundbreaking "Night Of The Living Dead," the undead have been through many different cinematic iterations and this year alone, we've seen them fall in love ("Warm Bodies") and nearly take over the entire planet as a plague (this weekend's "World War Z"). Well, another entry to the canon is here and is taking the brain-eaters somewhere else -- high school. From director Alex Craig Mann comes the horror/comedy "Detention Of The Dead," and the title should tell you all you need to know. Starring Jacob Zachar ("Greek"), Alexa Nikolas ("The Walking Dead"), Christa B. Allen ("Revenge"), Jayson Blair ("The New Normal"), Justin Chon ("21 and Over") and Max Adler ("Glee"), the story finds a ragtag bunch of teens trapped in detention and trying to figure how...

Ah FrightFest how I love thee. Yes, my annual excursion to Scotland for Glasgow FrightFest continues this year, and I couldn’t be happier! This years line-up is strong, Very strong, with plenty of variety and some great film picks by Alan, Ian, Paul and Greg. Plus the appearance of Norwegian drama Hellsfjord! Of all the films showing this year there’s one that I most excited to see – Detention of the Dead… I’ve tried my hardest to cover the film as much as possible over the past year as it looks like my “cup of tea”, so for it to show at FrightFest is awesome (although to be fair I already knew that was in the line-up). However the real big surprise is the appearance of Neil Jordan’s Byzantium in the line-up – the Scottish crowd is notoriously “blood-thirtsy” so I hope Jordan’s film isn’t too sedate for the Glasgow crowd.
